Eric Andrew Naposki (born December 20, 1966) is a convicted murderer serving life in prison without parole. He was a formerly professional football player who played in the National Football League and the World League of American Football from 1988 to 1997.
In May 2009, Naposki was arrested in Connecticut and charged with the December 1994 murder of billionaire investor Bill McLaughlin in Newport Beach, California. The murder was committed in league with Nanette Johnston, McLaughlin’s partner and Naposki’s secret lover, so she could collect McLaughlin’s life insurance. In July 2011, Naposki was convicted of first-degree murder and in August 2012 was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Naposki, a native of Tuckahoe, New York, played eight seasons of Pop Warner Football with the “Blue Devils” of Eastchester, New York. He later visited Tuckahoe H.S. and Roosevelt H.S., the latter in Yonkers, New York before transferring to Eastchester High School in his junior year. At Eastchester, he led the team in sacks and tackles for two years, with the team going 17-3 at the linebacker position during his tenure. Naposki also played safety, tight end, and running back in goal-line situations. He was promoted to All County in 1982 and All State in 1983, and graduated from Eastchester in 1984.
He was offered partial scholarships from New Hampshire, New Haven, and Buffalo, but chose a full scholarship to study football at the University of Connecticut (UConn). At the time, UConn was playing as Division I-AA in the now-defunct Yankee Conference. However, midway through his third year at UConn, he left the football team over a disagreement with his coach, Tom Jackson.
Naposki, who had NFL aspirations, decided to forego his scholarship and withdrew from the university. He returned to UConn to graduate in 1987 but left again for two years to pursue the NFL and received his physical education degree in 1991.
Naposki played professional football in the National Football League (NFL) and the World League of American Football (WLAF) from 1988 to 1997.
In the NFL, he appeared in five games over two seasons, including four games with the New England Patriots in 1988[1] and part of 1989[2] and one game with the Indianapolis Colts after joining that team was the remainder of the 1989 Colts season. [3]
Naposki then played four seasons in the WLAF with the Barcelona Dragons, who won the World Bowl of ’97 in his final season.[4] {{During his time with the Dragons, Naposki recorded 16.5 sacks in 3.5 seasons with one touchdown, one interception and multiple blocked punts and field goals. He was also a reserve player in camps with the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets.
Murder conviction[edit]
Multimillionaire investor William “Bill” McLaughlin was shot dead at his Newport Beach home on December 15, 1994. The murder was committed by Naposki in league with Nanette Ann Johnston, McLaughlin’s partner and Naposki’s secret lover, so she could raise $2.5 million (equivalent to $4.6 million in 2021 dollars) from McLaughlin’s life insurance and Savings.[5][6] The case remained unsolved for 15 years before Naposki and Johnston were indicted in California in 2009.[5]
At his July 2011 trial, witnesses testified that Johnston, also known as Nanette Packard McNeal (her married names) in court documents, was a young woman with two young children who McLaughlin, who was a quarter century his senior, seduced after wealthy Health Care -Entrepreneur had a contested divorce with his first wife of 24 years. Johnston met McLaughlin after placing an advertisement in a magazine seeking the company of a wealthy man.[7]
Johnston began living with McLaughlin in his luxury home in a close-knit gated community in Newport Beach and managing his personal finances.
On July 14, 2011, an Orange County jury found Naposki guilty of first-degree murder. The panel also found true an allegation in special circumstances that Naposki had committed the murder for financial gain and that he had personally fired a firearm, making him eligible for the death penalty, although the state ultimately did not seek the death penalty. The jury heard, during more than three weeks of testimony that included 28 witnesses and more than 240 exhibits, that Naposki conspired with Nanette Johnston, McLaughlin’s partner and Naposki’s secret lover, to murder McLaughlin for financial gain.[8]
Naposki was due to be sentenced on October 21, 2011; however, on that date, sentencing was delayed until 2012.[9] On August 10, 2012, Naposki received the maximum sentence of life imprisonment without parole at his hearing before Superior Court Judge William R. Froeberg.
In January 2012, an Orange County jury found Johnston (Packard McNeal) guilty of first-degree murder.[12][13] In May 2012, she was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.[10]
On September 15, 2012, Naposki was transferred to the California Department of Justice Corrections and Rehabilitation facility in Susanville, California. On October 12, 2013, he was transferred to California’s Corcoran State Penitentiary, where notorious killer Charles Manson also lived until Manson’s death in 2017.
In September 2014, an appellate attorney working for Naposki told a three-judge appellate panel of the Third Division of the California Circuit Courts of Appeals that the trial made four mistakes, including: the government’s 15-year delay in bringing the indictment; erroneous jury orders; biased jury; and inappropriately excluded evidence. On September 12, 2014, the court dismissed the appeal, with Judge William Rylaarsdam’s 18-page opinion – supported by colleagues Raymond Ikola and David Thompson – analyzing and rejecting each point, saying it found “no adverse error”. The panel noted: Authorities have charged Naposki and Johnston (Packard McNeal) after an Orange County Attorney’s Office (OCDA) investigator discovered new incriminating evidence; a juror who called the ex-footballer “creepy” didn’t deserve her removal; that Judge William Froeberg made no mistake in preventing a police officer from answering a question about Naposki’s facial expressions during a post-murder interview; and Froeberg was not wrong in refusing to issue a defense-proposed jury order about elemental murder for monetary gain.
Naposki has consistently maintained his innocence[14] and is currently appealing his conviction. Naposki was convicted on strong circumstantial evidence as no weapon was ever found. There was no DNA, no fingerprints, no eyewitnesses, and no surveillance tape. Naposki’s defense alleges that the fifteen-year delay in prosecution led to the loss of exculpatory evidence supporting his alibi (which was ruled valid by prosecutors in 1995, before it was discovered that the club where he worked as a bouncer had only a few hundred meters away from the scene of the crime). The TV series American Greed aired an episode about the murder in January 2017. The CBS TV series 48 Hours aired on October 29, 2011, the episode titled “Murder in the O.C.” The Oxygen TV series Dateline Secrets Uncovered aired an episode titled “Deadly Trust” about the case in 2019. On September 24, 2021, ABC 20/20 aired an episode entitled “Millionaire’s Mistake.”
On March 11, 2018, the Orange County Innocence Project had begun a review of Naposki’s case and conviction, with a focus on analyzing circumstantial evidence and the actions of Orange County prosecutors, who presented the indictment to a grand jury nearly 15 years later the fact, with particular emphasis on lost records from the initial investigation that Naposki may have clarified.

She and former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki have spent nearly a decade behind bars as convicted murderers, serving life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murder of Bill McLaughlin. Both deny any involvement in his death.
“I don’t know exactly [who killed McLaughlin],” Packard said. “I never said Eric did it because I can’t say for sure Eric did it. I don’t know that. He never told me that.”

Packard met Naposki at a gym in the early 1990s. Naposki, who once played for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, had since retired and was living in California, where he worked as a nightclub security guard and part-time bodyguard.

The two eventually began to view each other romantically, although Packard, who was then a mother to two children in her 20s, was already in a relationship with McLaughlin. He was an entrepreneur 30 years his senior who had made millions by inventing a medical device.
Packard lived with McLaughlin in Newport Beach, California, in a luxurious home in an affluent gated community. However, she told Naposki that she and McLaughlin were just business partners.
“Eric knew about Bill and Bill knew Eric was my friend. [Bill] didn’t know we were having an affair,” Packard said.

She said she met McLaughlin, a father of three, through a personal ad he posted in the Pennysaver.
“Maybe it wasn’t the most intense [relationship] romantically, but I loved him,” Packard said of McLaughlin. “He was a good man and he was good to my kids and I would never have killed him and probably would still be with him today if he were alive because I had no reason.”

McLaughlin was 55 when he was shot six times in the chest by an intruder on December 15, 1994 while he was sitting at his kitchen table.
Authorities did not make arrests in connection with his death until 15 years later, when investigators re-examined the case.
Packard and Naposki were arrested separately for murder in May 2009 during a covert operation on the Bi Coast.
At the time of her arrest, Packard and Naposki had gone their separate ways. Packard had married twice more and still lived in California. Naposki, meanwhile, had briefly played professional American football again abroad before returning to the United States, where he had a fiancé and lived in Connecticut.
Prosecutors claimed Packard was the alleged mastermind behind McLaughlin’s death and that she convinced Naposki to kill him so they could raise a substantial sum of money.
Prosecutors argued that Packard would benefit from McLaughlin’s million-dollar life insurance policy, $150,000 from his will, and access to his beach house.

There was reason to suspect Packard. In 1996, she had pleaded guilty to forgery and grand larceny after being accused of forging McLaughlin’s name on checks and stealing from his accounts. She was behind bars for 180 days.
Packard denied the murder charges against her, saying she needed McLaughlin to continue her lifestyle.
“I only made money when Bill was alive,” she said.
According to prosecutors, Naposki’s story unfolded during questioning. He initially lied about possession of a .9mm handgun, which was the same type of gun that killed McLaughlin.
“The most important piece of evidence we had against Eric Naposki was … the way he lied to the police,” said Matt Murphy, an ABC News consultant and a former Orange County prosecutor who tried the case.

When asked why he lied to the police, Naposki told ABC News, “I just didn’t want to talk about it because if I hadn’t been at the scene and not been in Newport, I couldn’t have killed the guy even if I was one.” Panzerfaust.”
Naposki went to court first and was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2011. He then met with prosecutors and told them Packard had staged a hit-and-run job against McLaughlin and the killer had used his gun.
“[Naposki said] he was there, in the room, when they were discussing [the conspiracy],” said author Caitlin Rother, who wrote a book about the case called I’ll Take Care of You. “But then he says, ‘But apparently [the killer] went behind my back and arranged to meet Nanette. So that’s what they planned. It was not me.'”
“The way he describes it, he’s a co-conspirator in a homicide,” Murphy added. “Even if it were true as he describes it, he is still 100% guilty of exactly what he was convicted of.”
Packard was found guilty in January 2012 of first-degree murder and special count of murder for financial gain.
Naposki is serving time at Avenal State Prison in Avenal, California. He said he hasn’t spoken to Packard since it all “went down.”
“I didn’t kill anyone. I’m not a murderer,” he said.

Packard is serving her sentence at the Central California Women’s Facility training service dogs through a program called Little Angels.
“These dogs just bring so much healing,” she said. “It also helps me make a change so I can live with being separated from my kids.”

McLaughlin’s children, who once thought their father’s murder would never be solved, have tried to move forward. They believe that justice has been served.
“[Packard’s and Naposki’s lives] were taken from them … and hopefully they’re reflecting on what they did,” Kim McLaughlin told ABC News. “What I miss most about my dad is just having him as a friend … and I know he would be very proud of us and the choices we make. And so it’s hard that he can’t share that with him here on earth… We miss him very much.”
