Nerlens Noel

American basketball player

Nerlens Noel (born April 10, 1994) is an American professional basketball player for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His college basketball career ended with a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his freshman season at the University of Kentucky. Noel was selected as the sixth pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2013 NBA Draft. His rights were later sold to the Philadelphia 76ers. He plays center and power forward and was one of the top high school basketball players in the class of 2012.

High school career[edit]

Noel at the Hoop Hall Classic in 2011

Born outside of Boston in Malden, Massachusetts, to Haitian immigrants, Noel spent his first two years of high school at Everett High School.[1] After his sophomore year, he transferred to the Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire. Noel was originally part of the Class of 2013 but was reclassified to the College Recruiting Class of 2012.[4] Noel averaged 12.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.9 blocks per game as a senior.[5]

He was ranked the #1 player in the Class of 2012 by ESPN[6] and Scout.com[7] and the #2 player by SLAM[8]. Noel was selected for the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit[9] and the 2012 Jordan Brand Classic.[10] In addition to his high school career, Noel also played AAU basketball on the same team as future Sixers teammate Michael Carter-Williams. Shortly before graduating from high school, an article in the New York Times described Noel as one of the best shot blockers of his generation, although he was also credited with immature offensive skills.[2]

College career[edit]

Noel in a Kentucky Wildcats game in 2012

After deliberating between several elite collegiate basketball programs, Noel decided in April 2012 that he would go to the University of Kentucky to play NCAA Division I basketball. He made his verbal commitment by revealing on national television the British logo shaved on the back of his head.[12] With Noel known for his top-notch shot blocking skills, fans and media had high expectations for him to fill in the shoes of Anthony Davis, who just led the Kentucky Wildcats to a national championship last season, was the 2011-2012 international of the year in the NCAA and set a freshman block record of 186 for both Kentucky and NCAA in a single season.

In his third game on November 16, 2012, he accumulated 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block and 4 steals against Lafayette. On January 12, 2013, despite Kentucky losing the game to Texas A&M, Noel recorded 15 points, 11 rebounds, 7 blocks, 6 assists and 4 steals.

On January 29, 2013, Noel set the UK single game record with 12 blocks in an 87–74 team win over #16 Ole Miss. Five of the blocks happened while Noel had four personal fouls, and two of those were rejections from slam dunk attempts. The UK school record was previously nine blocks, set by Sam Bowie in 1981 and then equaled by Andre Riddick in 1993. Despite scoring just two points, Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said in the post-game press conference, “[Noel] was the difference in the game” and that he has “an incredible defensive presence.” Ole Miss’ elder forward Murphy Holloway added that he believes Nerlen’s Noel is the “best shot blocker he’s played against,” including Anthony Davis.

On February 12, 2013, in a game against the Florida Gators, Noel tore the ACL in his left knee after blocking a layup in Florida, forcing him to sit out the rest of the season. Before his injury, he was predicted to be the first pick in the 2013 NBA draft. Despite his injury, Noel decided to declare himself for the 2013 draft on April 15, 2013.[18]

Noel has been honored with many awards including SEC Freshman of the Year, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC First Team, SEC All Freshman Team and SEC Community Service Team. In addition to receiving All-SEC first-team honors from the league’s coaches, Noel also received first-team honors from the Associated Press, continuing a four-year streak of British players earning AP first-team honors.

The Wildcats’ 2.11 m (6 ft 11 in) center was joined by UNLV Runnin’ Rebels’ Anthony Bennett, UCLA Bruins’ Shabazz Muhammad, Oklahoma State Cowboys’ Marcus Smart and Kansas Jayhawks’ Ben McLemore in the freshman all -America team. He was the fifth Kentucky player under coach John Calipari to receive the USBWA honor, alongside John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.[19]

Career[edit]

Philadelphia 76ers (2013–2017) [ edit ]

Noel entered the 2013 NBA draft after playing a season at the University of Kentucky and was predicted to be one of the top picks, with many considering Noel the favorite to be picked first in the draft. He was invited to sit in the “Green Room,” a room of the predicted top 10–15 college basketball players during the draft, and was eventually selected as the sixth overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans. There were concerns in the league over his torn left cruciate ligament, which may have caused him to slip down the draft. Later that night, Noel’s draft rights, along with a 2014 first-round pick, were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for guard Jrue Holiday and the draft rights to Pierre Jackson.

On July 12, 2013, the deal that sent Noel to the 76ers was completed. He signed with the 76ers on September 24, 2013.[26] Although the 76ers’ original plan was to have Noel play during the 2013-14 season, Noel missed the entire season while recovering from knee surgery.

Noel as a 76er in 2015

Noel joined the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2014 NBA Summer League.[29] On October 29, 2014, Noel made his long-awaited NBA debut in the 76ers’ 103-91 loss to the Indiana Pacers. In just under 35 minutes of action as a starter, he recorded 6 points, along with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks.[30] Two days later, the 76ers exercised their third-year team option on Noel’s rookie scale contract, extending the contract through the 2015–16 season. [31] On January 30, he recorded 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and a then-career-high 6 blocks in a 103-94 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Noel competed in the 2015 Rising Stars Challenge as part of the Team USA roster. On February 20, Noel recorded 12 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and a career-high 9 blocks in a loss to the Indiana Pacers. A week later against Washington, Noel became just the third 76ers rookie to record 100 blocks in a season.

On October 30, 2015, the 76ers exercised their fourth-year team option on Noel’s rookie scale contract, extending the contract through the 2016–17 season. On December 30, he recorded a season-high 20 points and 9 rebounds in a 110-105 win over the Sacramento Kings. On February 11, he was disqualified from the 2016 Rising Stars Challenge due to tendinitis in his right knee.

On October 22, 2016, Noel was ruled out for three to five weeks due to an infected plica over his left knee that required surgery. After spending time with the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League doing rehab duties from injuries in late November and early December, Noel made his season debut for the 76ers on December 11 against the Detroit Pistons after missing the first 23 had games. He scored eight points in 10 minutes off the bench before exiting the game in the second quarter with a left ankle sprain.

On January 24, 2017, in his first start of the season, Noel scored a season-high 19 points as well as three blocks in a 121-110 win over the Los Angeles Clippers replacing the injured Joel Embiid.

Dallas Mavericks (2017–2018)[edit]

On February 23, 2017, Noel was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Justin Anderson, Andrew Bogut, and a protected 2017 first-round pick.[44] He made his debut for the Mavericks two days later, recording nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench in a 96-83 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. On March 3, 2017, Noel hit a career-high 17 rebounds in his first start for the Mavericks and scored 15 points in a 104-100 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

On June 23, 2017, the Mavericks made a qualifying offer of $4.1 million[47] to make Noel a restricted free agent.[48] On August 26, 2017, he accepted the qualifying one-year offer of $4.1 million and officially re-signed with the Mavericks two days later. In the Mavericks’ season opener on October 18, 2017, Noel had 16 points, his most since joining Dallas, and 11 rebounds in a 117-111 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Nerlens Noel’s Girlfriend Jordan Walsh

UPDATE 08/15/2014: Nerlens. You ARE the father.

In the evolving saga of the woman once known between Nerlen’s Noel, Nerlen’s Noel’s baby mama Jamie, and the 14-month-old child rumored to be Noel’s, we have an answer. Noel is the biological father of the 14-month-old after a DNA test confirmed their ties. No word on a response from Nerlen and Noel’s friend Jordan Walsh.

The court documents filed say Noel has had limited contact with his son and is ceding primary custody to the child’s mother, Jamie. Noels strives for a “minimum level of child support,” which you know since a top 10 NBA pick doesn’t really have expendable income to spend on his damn kid or anything.

Good luck to Jamie, good luck to Jordan and good luck to that poor kid. Noel how to be a man.

Nerlen’s McMerlins are Twirlin’s and Unfurlin’s. So the guy has a crazy name; just have some fun with it. Where do you start with Young’s Nerlens? Well, Nerlen’s Noel’s girlfriend Jordan Walsh may or may not still be with him, but there are other more “dramatic” controversies. I’m talking good old fashioned baby mom drama (with a friend before Jordan Walsh entered the picture).

Just yesterday, TMZ reported that Nerl has canceled $10,000 a month in child support for a woman named Jamie because he wants to make sure his baby is really his. It started when a mystery girl named Jamie claimed her baby was born out of The Nerl, and then he signed an affidavit admitting to being the baby’s father. He then committed to paying the amount each month, but then stopped, claiming he didn’t understand what he had previously signed. That’s your classic BMD, folks. It has all the right ingredients: carelessness, confusion, and frowning baby mommies with expensive pacifiers.

Nerlens is known far and wide as Mr. Flat Top, adding an inch or two to his 6’11” (7’1″ Flat Top included) height. By the way, flat tops don’t increase logic or common sense. Nerlens was having a good year in Kentucky, averaging 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2 steals and an impressive 4.4 blocks per game. I suppose NBA scouts adored his athleticism, but I’ll put my foot down and say that getting him 6th overall was foolhardy. I know you think I’m crazy, but he hasn’t proven anything (other than blocking and stealing basketball in college) and a cruciate ligament tear is extremely serious. No one knows if it will hobble him permanently, which is happening. That’s not to say he can’t redeem himself and come onto the court, but it does mean players can drop a step and play conservatively after the ACL is permanently torn. But I hope that he proves me wrong. He’s already been paid $3.1 million, which again I find ridiculous, but who cares what I think.
