Nick Mullen

Nicholas “Nick” Mullen is an American stand-up comedian currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Along with comedians Stavros Halkias and Adam Friedland, he is the main host of the Cum Town podcast. He is the only Cum Town host to appear in every episode. Mullen launched the podcast in May 2016 with then-guest Halkias. Mullen has a significant following on Twitter as well as a popular blog on Thought Catalog about the character Nicole Mullen. Mullen was born in New York, where he currently resides, and moved to Baltimore, MD when he was a young child. He is believed to be the only child of divorced parents, and has not yet been publicly named. His father remarried to a woman with several daughters. Mullen has said he was treated unfairly compared to his stepsisters — at least as a teenager — but he hasn’t shown any overt resentment towards any of his family members. Mullen has spoken about his early exposure to what he believes to be the true Internet, an unsupervised anonymous era that today’s censored version pales in comparison to. Mullen has cited this exposure as the reason for his current sense of humor and personality, noting in particular that he first saw the popular shock image Goatse when he was nine years old. Mullen got his start in his hometown of Baltimore, where he would do comedy in the evenings while he worked or attended school during the day. At 28, he’s been doing comedy for almost twelve years, starting when he was sixteen. Mullen dropped out of high school, and while he never received higher education, he tested his GED and presumably earned it. During those years, Mullen’s stepmother demanded that he have a job so that he could live with her and her father. Nick said he’s worked at GameStop, Domino’s, Papa John’s, Jimmy John’s and “a million sandwich shops.” It is unclear which of these service industry jobs were in Baltimore. Mullen saved and moved to Austin, TX for several years, where he met comedians Chris Cubas, Jake Flores, Kath Barbadoro and Norman “Hormone” Wilkerson, living with the former. Not much else is known about this period in Nick’s life, although it is believed that he contracted herpes sometime after 2010 while he was still living in Austin. Outside of Cum Town, Mullen was found to have received the STD from a female comedian. Mullen lived a second time in Los Angeles, Washington DC and Austin before moving to New York. He met his co-hosts and comedian Brandon Wardell in DC, although Stavros Halkias is also from Baltimore and is less than a year his junior. Nick Mullen has lived in New York for over three and a half years. He currently resides in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn with Felix Biederman and Amber A’Lee Frost. When he first moved to the city, he lived in a tenement-like illegal condominium for about a year until he was suddenly kicked out when the owner developed the property. He then moved into an apartment with a Chinese family in Chinatown, Manhattan, for another year, until his current roommates offered him his current apartment. Mullen works as a production assistant on local television shoots, usually as a truck driver. He has also worked as an extra and regularly auditions for commercials/small television roles. Mullen’s podcast, Cum Town, is a weekly hour-long comedy podcast centered around the host’s conversations. The show often features guests, and the presenters occasionally prepare “parts” or characters to speak to for a portion of the show. Nick half-jokingly denounced the planning, and most character interactions last under ten minutes. The podcast released 33 episodes in 2016, all of which aired on Wednesdays. The podcast is typically uploaded after 9:00 a.m. EST and rarely recorded on the same day. Mullen is the podcast’s host, producer, editor, intern and fluffer, and also bought the equipment for the early recording sessions. The podcast has a Patreon where users can donate money to the show. Since Nick bought all the podcast equipment, he gets half of the donation money, while Stavros and Adam share the other half. If a user chooses to do so, they can donate $5.00/month to get access to Cum Town’s premium episodes.

Nick Mullens

American football player (born 1995)

American football player

Nicholas Clayton Mullens (born March 21, 1995) is an American football quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, where he surpassed Brett Favre’s record for passing yards (4,476) and touchdown passes (38) in a single season. He played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017 to 2020. Mullens also played for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Early life[edit]

Mullens was born on March 21, 1995 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Suzanne and Mark Mullens and grew up in Hoover, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham. He is the grandson of Ernie Tabor,[1][2] who played in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league system in the 1950s.[3] His uncle Scott Tabor played for the Arkansas Razorbacks[2] baseball team and holds the school record for most career wins.[4] He also served professionally in the minor leagues.[5] Mullens graduated from Spain Park High School in Hoover.

High school career[edit]

Mullens played football for Spain Park and emerged as the team’s starting quarterback. During his 2012 senior season, Mullens threw for 3,649 yards and 40 touchdowns, against just seven interceptions, en route to winning the 2012 Gatorade Player of the Year award for Alabama State. He had a total of 8,605 passing yards in his career and finished his high school career with the seventh most passing yards in AHSAA history, along with 40 passing touchdowns.

After initially verbally committing to attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Mullens changed course on National Signing Day after a last-minute visit to the University of Southern Mississippi and instead signed with the Golden Eagles.

College career[edit]

After starting the 2013 season with an 0-6 record stuck on an 18-game losing streak, Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken used true freshman Mullens as the starter for game seven, a home game against the North Texas Mean Green ] However, the young team was outclassed by North Texas and suffered a 55-14 loss in which Mullens rushed 12 to 31 for 210 yards and a touchdown while suffering three interceptions and a lost fumble.

In his second collegiate game, a loss to Marshall, Mullens became the first true freshman starting quarterback in Southern Miss history to rush for more than 300 yards in a single game, a feat that the school had never accomplished in his freshman year, Brett Favre.[12]

On November 30, 2013, Mullens played a key role in helping Southern Miss end his 24-game losing streak with a five-touchdown performance against the University of Alabama-Birmingham, which also happened to be the college he originally registered for had committed. 13]

Mullens rushed for 1,776 yards as a freshman in 2013. As a sophomore in 2014, he started 10 games and completed 218 of 365 attempts for 2,470 passing yards and 12 touchdowns.

During the 2015 regular season, Mullens completed 331 of 521 passes (63.5%) for 4,476 yards and 38 touchdowns — school records for passing yards and touchdown passes. He ranked sixth among NCAA Division I FBS quarterbacks in passing yardage. Mullens’ efforts were instrumental in reversing the fortunes of the Southern Miss Football program, with the team going a 9-5 record for the year just two seasons after breaking its miserable 24-game losing streak. He started all 14 games as the Golden Eagles finished with 7,000 yards of offense for the first time in school history.

In 2016, Mullen made 11 starts and completed 243 of 384 attempts for 3,272 yards and 24 touchdowns, averaging 297.5 yards per game. On October 1, 2016, he threw for a college career-high 591 yards, four touchdowns and one interception against the Rice Owls in a 44-28 win.

In four seasons at Southern Miss (2013–2016), Mullens played in 44 games (41 starts) and completed 928 of 1,546 attempts for 11,994 yards and 87 touchdowns. He finished his college career as a career leader in every statistical category. His 11,994 yards and 87 touchdown passes dwarfed the 7,695 yards and 52 touchdowns recorded by former NFL legend Brett Favre during his four years with the Golden Eagles.[19]

Career[edit]

San Francisco 49ers[edit]

Season 2017[edit]

On May 4, 2017, Mullens signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent. He entered training camp as the fourth backup quarterback on the depth chart behind veterans Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley and rookie C.J. Beathard.

On September 2, 2017, Mullens was waived as part of the 49ers’ final roster cuts, but he was accepted into the practice squad the next day. On January 2, 2018, the 49ers signed Mullens to a reserves/futures contract after spending his entire rookie season on the practice team.

Season 2018[edit]

Mullens during training camp in 2018

On September 1, 2018, Mullens was waived by the 49ers and inducted into the practice squad the next day. On September 26, 2018, the 49ers promoted Mullens to their active roster after starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL and was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. The terms of his new contract were two years and $1.05 million.[30]

On November 1, 2018, Mullens was named the starter for Thursday night’s 49ers’ Week 9 game against the Oakland Raiders after Beathard suffered a wrist injury in the previous game against the Arizona Cardinals. Mullens completed his NFL debut and first NFL start, completing 16 of 22 pass attempts for 262 yards and three touchdowns as the 49ers won 34-3. His 151.9 passing rating was the highest since 1970 for a quarterback with at least 20 passing attempts on a debut. Mullens also became the first player in 49ers history to throw three touchdowns in his first game for the team. He completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Pierre Garçon in the first quarter to mark his first NFL touchdown. The following week against the New York Giants, Mullens threw for 250 yards, a touchdown, and was intercepted twice by linebacker BJ Goodson in the 49ers’ 27-23 loss Monday night. Mullens made his first road start in Week 12. He threw for 221 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the 49ers lost 27-9. During Week 13 against the Seattle Seahawks, Mullens finished with a career-high 414 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception as the 49ers lost 43-16. In Week 14 against the Denver Broncos, he rushed for 332 yards, two touchdowns and one interception as the 49ers won 20-14. In Week 15, Mullens threw for 275 yards and a touchdown to help the 49ers defeat the Seattle Seahawks 26-23 in overtime. This was the first time the 49ers defeated the Seahawks since 2013. In the regular-season finals against the Los Angeles Rams, he finished with 282 passing yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in the 48-32 loss.

Mullens finished the 2018 season with 2,277 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Season 2019[edit]

During the 2019 season, Mullens primarily served as a replacement for Jimmy Garoppolo. He only appeared in one game during the 2019 season.[40] The 49ers reached Super Bowl LIV, but the team lost 31-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Season 2020[edit]

On March 5, 2020, Mullens was awarded a one-year, $750,000 free agent tender by the 49ers. He signed the contract on May 1, 2020.[43] On September 20, 2020, Mullens came in after halftime in a game against the New York Jets after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a leg injury. In the game, Mullens completed 8 of 11 passes for 71 yards and one interception in a 31-13 win. Mullens was named the starter for Week 3 against the New York Giants. He rushed for 343 yards and a touchdown in the 36-9 win. In Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Mullens posted a career low passer rating of 72.6 in which he threw a pick six to linebacker Alex Singleton, resulting in Mullens being benched for C.J. Beathard. Without Mullens, the 49ers would lose 25-20 to the Eagles. [47]

In Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks, Mullens came on in the fourth quarter after Jimmy Garoppolo left the game with an ankle injury. Mullens put the 49ers back in the game by completing 18 of 25 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, but the 49ers lost 27-37. Mullens was again named the 49ers’ starter for Thursday night’s 49ers soccer game against the Green Bay Packers due to Garoppolo being sidelined indefinitely due to his ankle injury. In Week 13 against the Buffalo Bills, he had 316 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the 34-24 loss.

On December 22, 2020, it was announced that Mullens would miss the remainder of the season with an elbow injury sustained in the 49ers’ 41–33 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Three days later he was placed on injured reserve.[54] Mullens was scheduled to become a restricted free agent after the season, but the team did not submit him a tender early in the new league year and he became a unrestricted free agent.

Philadelphia Eagles[edit]

On June 14, 2021, Mullens signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. On August 28, 2021, Mullens was waived by the Eagles.

Cleveland Browns[ edit ]

Mullens was signed to the Cleveland Browns practice team on September 1, 2021. Mullens was drafted into the Browns’ active squad on October 21, 2021 ahead of their game that night and returned to the practice team the following day.

For the Week 15 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, Mullens was named the starting quarterback after the Browns experienced a COVID-19 outbreak that also saw fellow quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum test positive. Additionally, the game was moved from Saturday, December 18 to Monday, December 20, the first game of the season to be postponed due to COVID-19. During the game, Mullens threw a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter and put the Browns ahead. Derek Carr then led a successful drive down the field that ended with the Raiders kicking a field goal and winning 16-14. Mullens completed 20 of 30 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown in the loss before returning to the practice team later that week.
