Hemingway Estate $1.4 Million; Widow is His Lone Beneficiary

Hemingway Estate $1.4 million; The widow is his sole beneficiary

BY ROBERT TOMASSON

The remainder of the estate will be used for past and present taxes, miscellaneous debts, funeral expenses and attorney’s fees, according to a balance sheet filed with the State Tax Commission’s Transfer and Estate Tax Division at 80 Center Street yesterday.

The author, winner of both Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, was found dead of a gunshot wound at his home in Ketchum, Idaho, on July 2, 1961.

Mr. Hemingway would have been 62 on July 21.

The author’s assets were divided into three categories in accounting – stocks and bonds ($418,933), miscellaneous property ($801,766), and mortgages, debentures and cash ($189,611).

Adjusted gross assets were listed as $1,289,336 after deducting $62,545 for funeral and administrative expenses and $58,529 for debt.

All debts except $918 are owed to the Internal Revenue Service, the New York State Tax Commission, and the Florida Tax Commission for past tax bills.

Mrs. Hemingway is expected to receive half of the adjusted gross worth, or $644,618. The other half is subject to inheritance taxes from the federal and state governments.

A tax expert said yesterday that taxes on the amount would be “about $250,000.”

Mr. Hemingway held interests in 36 companies. They were mostly blue-chip securities, which appeared to have brought him more income than his published works in the five years before his death.

The author’s Wall Street holdings seemed more compatible with a banker’s portfolio than with a hardy writer who found so much of his literary inspiration in the bullrings of Spain and the jungles of Africa.

Major holdings included Eastman Kodak common stock, 304 shares worth $32,233; General Motors, 540 shares at $24,088; Bethlehem Steel, 240 shares worth $10,081 and 336 shares of American Telephone and Telegraph Company worth $39,447.

Mr. Hemingway also owned 50 shares of Gimbels common stock valued at $3,581.

Accompanying the financial records was a statement from Charles Scribner & Sons, Mr. Hemingway’s publisher for 36 years, stating that the publishing house had paid the author $179,135 in royalties in the five years before his death.

The amount included $61,429 in royalties for The Old Man and the Sea, his last major published work. Not included was the payment he received for the film rights to the novel.

Charles Scribner Jr., in attempting to estimate future earnings from the writer’s published works, said that “the sales of a deceased author, even a world-famous one, decline markedly in the years after his death”.

“In the case of Ernest Hemingway, it would be reasonable to assume that the same pattern of declining sales would follow, and probably with a more pronounced decline, since this author contributed significantly to the sales of his works during his lifetime through the unusually wide circulation of interest in the events of his life ‘ wrote Mr. Scribner.

The author also left his wife two of his original manuscripts – “A Farewell to Arms” valued at $4,500 and “To Have and Have Not” valued at $5,000.

Mrs. Hemingway, who resides at 1 East 62d Street, said after her husband’s death that she also owned several of his unpublished works.
