Leiser, aged 85, resident of Harmony House, Two Rivers, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers. Alma was born on January 7, 1917 in Nekoosa, Wisconsin to the late Leonard and Gusta Krueger Marquardt. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Grade School, graduated from Two Rivers Washington High School with the class of 1934, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and received her master’s degree from Columbia University, New York City. After graduating from Madison, she taught at the Joint School District in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. She later moved to Long Island, New York, to teach at Freeport High School, where she directed the home economics department for 32 years. Alma married Joe Leiser in New York and retired from teaching in 1977. In 1996 she returned to Two Rivers. Survivors include sisters and brothers: Laura Roach, Las Cruces, N.M.; Walter Marquardt, Parumph, Nev.; Doris (Gerhold) Noeldner, Brillion; and Dale Marquardt, Two Rivers; a brother-in-law: Eugene Roach; and a niece: Judi Roach King. She continues to be survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: Dr. William Marquardt and Edgar Marquardt. A3 GEORGE LEITL George Leitl, 70, retired operator of American Hall on the northern outskirts of Two Rivers, died at 6:30 this morning at his home after an illness at his home for five months. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Klein & Stangel, Inc. Funeral Home in Two Rivers, with Rev. Frank Junek, pastor of Melnik Presbyterian Church, leading the ceremony. Burial will be in Forest View Cemetery. The body can be viewed at the funeral home from Thursday afternoon until the service. Mr. Leitl was born on December 4, 1870 in Bohemia. At the age of 21 he came to this country and settled in Chicago. He later lived in Menominee, Mich., Ludington, Mich., and Montana and moved to Two Rivers 25 years ago. He bought the tavern and ballroom from William Schaefer when he took up residence there. 12 years ago he retired from the active operation of the place. Mr. Leitl was married in Menominee on January 8, 1895 to Lizzie Zachek, who survived him with a daughter, Mrs. Gus Timm of Two Rivers. There are also two grandchildren. Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, May 14, 1941 P 2 LIZZIE LEITL Mrs. George Leitl, 71, née Elizabeth Zachek, of Two Rivers, died this morning at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital after an illness of five weeks. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at the Klein and Stangel Inc. funeral home in Two Rivers. She was born on her parents’ farm near Tisch Mills in 1875 and married George Leitl in Menominee, Michigan in 1895. They later moved to Montana for three years and then returned for a two year period. Mr. Leitl then ran a tavern in Ludington for 10 years and came to Two Rivers in 1916 where he bought the dance hall and tavern on the northern boundary of Two Rivers which he later named American Hall. Since the death of her husband five years ago, Ms. Leitl has been living with a daughter, Ms. Ross Timm, who currently runs the hall. She was born on October 5, 1946 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Elmer Wilsmann and the late June Ahrens Wilsmann. She was a graduate of Washington High School, Two Rivers, Class of 1964 and then a graduate of Lakeshore Technical Institute with an associate degree in child care in 1978. She married Donald L. Lichterman on July 22, 1967 in Waukegan, Illinois. Dianne was employed at the Tiny Tots Day Care Center in Two Rivers for 13 years and also at the Salvation Army Day Care in Manitowoc. Dianne was choir director and principal organist for the Emanuel United Methodist Church and played the organ for various other churches in the community. She was involved in girl scouting for many years and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. In ill health since July he had still been able to be up and about last Friday. Death was attributed to a heart stroke. He was a brother of the late Julius Lindstedt, Manitowoc realtor. He was born January 23, 1916, at Kewaunee, son of the late Thomas and Mary Gabriel Lischka. He attened (sic) grade school in Kewaunee. In 1941 he married the former Gladys Schneider in Iowa. She preceded him in death May 20, 1965. On December 23, 1967, he married the former Marie Jordon in Manitowoc. Mr. Lischka farmed in Kewaunee county until 1955. He was employed at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company for 32 years as a welder. Manitowoc Herald Times, Thursday, May 18, 1965 P.66 ELMER WILLIAM LOBER Ty Lober, Ball Manager, Dies This Morning Elmer (Ty) Lober, (photo) 54, manager of the Two Rivers Mirros of the Wisconsin State league from 1927 to 1931 and a former Milwaukee Brewer star, died this morning at Maple Crest sanatorium, Whitelaw. The Two Rivers baseball star was reported on the way to recovery but his condition took a turn for the worse 10 days ago. He was forced to leave his job in the machine shop of the Aluminum Goods company in May. Military funeral rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars will take place Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Klein and Stangel Inc., funeral home, Two Rivers, with interment in Forest View cemetery there. The former manager of the Mirro club, who during his years with the Milwaukee Brewers was considered the greatest fielding outfielder in the American association, was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1891 and at the age of 16 entered professional baseball. Enters Service In 1909, Mr. Lober was signed by the Bartiesville, Oklahoma club at the Western Association, late in the season going to Kewanee, Ill., of the central Association. In 1910 Kewanee sold him to the Los Angeles club of the Pacific Coast league. In 1911 he was traded to Portland of the same circuit, where he remained until 1916. In 1916 and 1917 he saw service with the Lincoln, Nebraska club of the Western league, from where he entered the service and served for more than a year in France with the Engineers of Twenty-ninth division. Returing from overseas Mr. Lober was signed by the Toledo Mudhens of the American Association and was sold to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1922, where for three years he was the leadoff hitter on the club. Came Here in 1927 Mr. Lober wound up his organized baseball career with the Little Rock club of the Southern league in 1925, where he was stricken with an asthmatic condition. He came to Two Rivers during the summer of 1927 from Milwaukee and joined the Mirro baseball club, taking a position as an electrician at the Aluminum Goods firm. He succeeded George Harrop as manager the same year and continued to direct the club until his retirement from the game in 1931. During that period Mr. Lober led the Mirros to the Wisconsin State league pennant in 1928, lost the play-off with the Sheboygan Chairs the following year and placed second on two accasions (sic). Luebke, 89, of 1424 S. 10th St., Manitowoc, a co-founder of the first steam laundry at Two Rivers and for two terms a member of the Two Rivers Board of Education, died Friday morning at Manitowoc County Hospital where he had been a patient a week. Mr. Luebke was born March 18, 1875, at Manitowoc, a son of the late Carl and Sophie Luebke. Educated in Manitowoc public schools and at the old County Normal School there, he took a teaching position at Kiel, where Dec. 7, 1905, he married the former Helen Backhaus. Early in 1906 he moved to Two Rivers where with the late Edwin S. Mueller, for many years later county superintendent of schools and father of Judge Harold W. Mueller, established the Two Rivers Steam Laundry. Mr. Mueller returned to the teaching field after two years and Mr. Luebke continued the operation of the laundry enterprise. The original laundry was on 17th Street on the site of the Steel Plant of Hamilton Mfg. Co., and adjoined the old weekly Two Rivers Reporter printing plant. One of his earlier friends at Two Rivers was poet Carl Sandburg, who was active in promotion of political pursuits about 1909, before leaving the state. In 1932 Mr. Luebke disposed of the Two Rivers Steam Laundry, moved after several years to a location on 17th Street between Washington and Adams streets, to the late Al Ploenske, of Berlin, Wis. Mr. Luebke was active in civic affairs at Two Rivers for many years and served on the Board of Education for six years. After selling his laundry he became custodian of the old H.P. Hamilton School, now the Two Rivers City Hall-Vocational School. In later years before his retirement nine years ago he worked at Eggers Plywood Co. at Two Rivers. Norman was born January 9, 1918, in the town of Pierce, Kewaunee County, son of the late Edward and Lillian (Raether) Machut. He attended country school in Alaska, Wis. and Kewaunee High School, graduating with the class of 1935. He entered the United States Army on Nov. 2, 1942, serving during WWII in North Africa and then Sicily where he was wounded. He then returned to the states, and was medically discharged Nov. 23, 1943. On Aug. 18, 1945, he married Lorraine (Babe) Kuehl at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Kewaunee. The couple operated Kuehl’s Grove Tavern and Hall in Kewaunee County from 1945 to 1950. In 1951, he purchased the Spot Bar in Washington Street in Two Rivers, which he operated until 1960. Norman then built Babe & Norm’s Bar in 1961 on a tract of land north of Two Rivers on Highway 42. Later, after several additions, it became Machut’s and then Machut’s Supper Club as it is currently named. Norm sold the business to his children in 1983, and completely retired from the business in 1991. He was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Two Rivers, V.F.W. Post 31248 of Two Rivers, and was an active member of the Two Rivers Lions Club. Norm was also a longtime member of the Tavern League of Wisconsin before his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine (Babe) Machut; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Jean Machut, Scott and Lillibeth (Liza) Machut, all of Two Rivers. On a late afternoon stroll, I saw a large group of people crowding around a squad car near the Philosophers Stones on State Street. To be honest, my mind was a little negative and thought the worst (since unfortunately the park gets a bad rap from a few bad apples). Luckily, I was glad everyone (including the police) was gathered around a leopard-like cat sitting on the sidewalk. Just chilling and enjoying the day, the owner had obviously pulled it out to get a daily dose of sunshine. A few minutes passed before I noticed the dishes, I was so upset about a cat hanging around State Street; If it were a dog, I wouldn’t be surprised.
As I thought of all the questions I had for the owner, the majestic cat began to run and the crowd dispersed. I was lucky and approached cautiously because while I wasn’t that shy around animals I wasn’t sure how the owner would react if someone asked if they could take a picture of the two. She easily agreed, introducing herself as Michelle and her cat Jax; an annual mix of leopard and bengal. Jax drops almost $1000 on him and is worth every penny. Michelle is a college student studying biochemistry and when she is not busy with the books and labs; Jax keeps her on her toes.
So while I had my stranger’s name and a little about her for my 608 strangers, I wanted to know more about Jax. As we talked, he looked quizzically at a tree as if he was about to climb it, and then before my eyes he jumped off the ground onto the bark and began climbing the tree. With his leash/harness still attached, Michelle brought him back to reality, explaining with a laugh that he often has more energy than her. As a grown adult at the age of one, eating only raw meat for your diet can be expensive, but to maintain his chic figure, Michelle often takes Jax for walks. Not only is he a good companion for walks, but when he wants something he is very vocal and creative to get attention. Michelle told me that Jax once ripped up the toilet paper roll and threw it in the bowl to get her attention. (Smart cat!) He loves to hunt and has only two fears; Basketballs and swiffers, weird things on my mind to be afraid of, but I’m not a cat.
I had a business card ready in my pocket and expressed if she wanted more photos of her cat OR just read my account of our meeting to visit my website. We no longer walked as strangers, and I was a little more knowledgeable about this chic feline. While most of the backstory revolves around Jax, I’m happy to share this with my fellow members of the 100 Strangers community.
