Ray McElrathbey went through something few on this planet will ever go through: a life worth decluttering. In 2006, McElrathbey, a redshirt freshman football player at Clemson University, took in his little brother Fahmar to keep him out of foster care. For weeks, McElrathbey hid Fahmarr in his stuffy dorm room, pocketing food from the college cafeteria to bring upstairs. Eventually, Clemson found out that McElrathbey was raising a teenager in a dorm room, leading to a battle with the NCAA that ended surprisingly well — he was granted a waiver that allowed him to start a trust fund in Fahmar’s name.

ESQ: Aside from your character, I think the real star of the film is the hip-hop music of the 2000s. You set “Bring ‘Em Out” as a highlight, “Hey Ya!” as a ringtone.
Ray McElrathbey: Look, back then, Atlanta was going through this whole snap phase. I was a huge Jay Z fan to this day. I always go for classics. The O’Jays, Jeffrey Osborne. People who were in that film were people that I actually listened to at the time. Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, so yeah it was big. I’m a big outkast guy too, don’t get me wrong.
ESQ: I’m sure people have asked you to return to that particular time in your life – but I’m curious how that time in your life has affected you now as a father.
RM: I always remind my brother of the time because he always thinks his part in this whole situation is tiny. Like, no, dude. You have allowed me to practice, and it improves my son’s life. And that’s bigger than anything else. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a parent without actually having a scorecard. Because your kids are mostly your scorecards — people see your kids and see how well you’re doing. And so just to have him as someone to lean on. It’s like. OK, here is one of the children I raised that made me want to be a loving father in my own life. Because I understand that the biggest part is just being there. And then anything else you can work out. You know, money may come soon, but as long as love is there, you’ll be fine.
ESQ: I mean, how many men have the opportunity to be a father of sorts so young and have children of their own later in life?
RM: I am grateful. It was an opportunity most people don’t get to practice parenting before actually being one. Because there were no expectations either. Everyone wanted me to be okay, but no one expected me to be the world’s best parent because of my situation.

ESQ: Were you with Clemson when they shot the scenes there?
RM: Yes, I was there. It was very different because I was back in Clemson at a football game. Before that game, I was made an honorary captain. I had to go to the center of the field and stand in the center of the field while all the fans were in the stands and it took me back to a place I hadn’t been in a while and it was emotional… It’s wild , because as an athlete – well, as a person – there are moments in your life that make you feel nostalgic. Even songs you will hear or things you will remember. And I have to do it again. There aren’t too many other athletes who go back and get the same fanfare. And for me, the fanfare was bigger when I came back than when I left, and to have that opportunity is crazy.
ESQ: I have a feeling watching the film made you feel crazy too – I’m sure it was a painful time in your life in many ways.
RM: I learned from my pain, so I turned around even at the most painful times of my life and made the most influential [time of my life]. Case in point: I got kicked out of elementary school. I was a bad kid growing up. But it was actually the best thing that’s happened to me educatively, other than going to Clemson, because I went from being in a classroom of 30 students to having a one-on-one with the teacher—a woman named Mrs. Jones and her bored me. We used to start each day with a crossword and end each day with a movie because I got through the syllabus so quickly because it was just the two of us. By the time I made it into middle school, I didn’t have to be there anymore. That steered me in the right direction.
ESQ: I don’t know about you guys but I grew up watching these kinds of Disney sports movies – awesome, feel good, have the cusp of music at the end…
RM: When Disney said they had my film – it was just a film that I had in mind when they came up with it. It was Angels in the Outfield. In this film was a child. I think his name was JT. His thing was almost like: It will work. That was always his saying. This is how I live my life. Because I’ve had times when I’ve been in foster care — and they’ve been in foster care. You want your family to pick you up, and then you sit there and ask yourself: why me? what makes me different Why can’t I have the things that all these other kids have? And that’s how movies like Angels in the Outfield appealed to me back then. If my film can touch people like Angels in the Outfield touched me? That’s more than I could ever ask for.
ESQ: Safety has those Disney beats in it where, like the overly Italian roommate, there’s a school dance that gets everyone cheering. Was there anything you saw that made you just think, This is amazing or silly?
RM: Something that didn’t happen?
ESQ: There’s no way the Italian roommate said “Mangia!”
RM: Oh no, but people were composites of individuals. Well, while I didn’t have an Italian roommate, my roommate spoke to the character that gentleman was. But there are things in the film [that were different]. I have seven siblings – you’d think I only had one sibling because of the film. I had three younger brothers, not just one, and then I also took care of my sister when she was in high school. I had custody of her and she stayed with me until she graduated from high school. As for things that didn’t happen, as far as the antagonist in the film goes, the NCAA isn’t as bad as portrayed because they came through for me. They didn’t have to do the waiver, but they did. And to let everyone know that me and my parents are wonderful. We love each other, my family is a close-knit family, we go through things like most families would. But I love my mother, I love my father and I am thankful to have them as my parents.

ESQ: I also wanted to ask the first part of what you said because I have a feeling some people will see this film and think, Look at the good that the NCAA can do by supporting student athletes.
RM: Yes.
ESQ: I agree – I think the NCAA really did a good thing in this scenario. But as you see it now in 2020, do you feel like they have more work to do, or do you think there is something they can do to better serve student athletes?
RM: It’s a slippery slope because when I was in school I think I would have campaigned for a check. But at the same time, I’m not sure where all the money is supposed to come from and who decides who gets what. What does that determine? … I’m not very familiar with the moving parts, because when I was thinking about the payment and doing the study on it for the school, I went to our athletic director. She was in charge of finance, but she sat me down and showed me that football is in the black but all these other programs are in the red. So if you pay the soccer players, you would have to cut the rowing team, swimming team, basketball team, track and field team, etc. is it worth it? And then the opportunity that the NCAA offers to a number of gentlemen, namely 85 scholarships, which for many gentlemen would not otherwise go to college. I think we should try to capitalize on some of the good things and not just harp on the flaws.
ESQ: With everything we see in the movies — themes like fatherhood, fraternity, the NCAA, young relationships — is there anything you’d like people to take away?
RM: Oh, I got a million takeaways. Family is everything. One of our mottos at Clemson is “All in” and that speaks to the commitment you need to have in relation to family, team and all the things you do in life. Effort creates opportunity, so if you want opportunity, you have to make an effort. Another thing I learned from Clemson is to always start with myself. To solve the world’s problems, I have to start with myself. Basically, I have a role in the film – I can say something and address the team. And that was one of the things we used to say when I was younger. Repeat after me. Once the task has started.

Raymond “Ray-Ray” McCloud III (born October 15, 1996) is an American football wide receiver and return specialist for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Clemson.
Early years[edit]
McCloud attended Sickles High School in Tampa, Florida and played as a running back for the Gryphons football team.[1] As a senior, he rushed for 1,933 yards and 17 touchdowns. For his high school career, he had 5,765 rushing yards and 58 touchdowns. He signed on to play football for the Clemson Tigers in July 2014, picking them over the likes of Alabama, Auburn and Florida.[3]
College career[edit]
As a freshman in 2015, McCloud played in 12 games, catching 29 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown.[4] He missed three games due to a knee injury.[5]
In 2016, McCloud played in 14 of Clemson’s 15 games as a sophomore, missing one due to an ankle injury. In those 14 games, he threw up 49 receptions for 472 yards and two touchdowns, helping Clemson win the national championship.
As a junior in 2017, McCloud played in all 14 of Clemson’s games, catching 49 receptions for 503 yards and a touchdown. He also returned 25 punts for 303 yards and a touchdown. After the season, he declared himself a candidate for the 2018 NFL Draft.[9]

Buffalo Bills[edit]
McCloud was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round with the 187th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. In Week 3, in a 27-6 win over the Minnesota Vikings, he made his first professional reception and had a 13-yard punt return.
On August 31, 2019, McCloud was quashed by the Bills.[13]
Carolina Panthers[edit]
On September 1, 2019, McCloud was released from waivers by the Carolina Panthers. It was rescinded on October 15, 2019.[15]
Buffalo Bills (second stint) [ edit ]
On October 17, 2019, McCloud was named to the Buffalo Bills practice squad.[16] In addition to serving as a wide receiver, McCloud served as quarterback on the scout team, mimicking the style of mobile quarterbacks the Bills faced that week. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Bills on January 6, 2020.[18] It was rescinded on July 27, 2020.[19]
Pittsburgh Steelers[edit]
On August 21, 2020, McCloud signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.[20] McCloud signed a one-year contract extension with the Steelers on March 11, 2021.[21] McCloud became the Steelers’ primary return specialist, returning 28 kickoffs for 646 yards and 29 punts with a 10.7 yard average. He was included by Pro Football Focus in their All-Pro roster as a second-team return specialist.
In 2021, McCloud led the NFL in total punt return yards won.
San Francisco 49ers[edit]
On March 22, 2022, McCloud signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.[25]
