Former NFL tight end Russ Francis has achieved a lot in his life so far. But all he ever wanted to do was fly.
That’s exactly what he did. And his football career empowered him to rise even higher.
Francis won a Super Bowl with Joe Montana and the 49ers after the 1984 season. Before that, he formed three Pro Bowl teams as a New England Patriot. Niners coach Bill Walsh convinced Francis to end a promising career in broadcasting – the tight end had retired prematurely to pursue his interests off the pitch. Namely, he had a passion for skydiving, surfing, motorcycles and aviation.
Its ties to the Bay Area remain strong. Although he lives in Wyoming, Francis regularly attends the 49ers’ alumni weekend. He was in town during Week 2 of the NFL season to co-host “The Point After” with Mark Ibañez on KTVU Channel 2 and “Mercedes Benz Sports Report,” a 49ers pregame show, on the same network to function. He also found time to galavanize around the Bay Area with Petaluma memorabilia and Agent Rob Hemphill.
While his love of flying led to his early retirement, it was also the reason Francis, 65, decided to play professional football in the first place.
“I wasn’t really thinking straight because I had an addiction,” Francis said, deliberately misleading his audience. “The decision to go into football had a lot to do with being able to pay for this addiction. That addiction was an airplane addiction.
“I was like, ‘I have to play football because they paid me enough money.’ So I actually played football to fly.”
Francis’ affinity for flying grew from an early infatuation with birds.
“I drew birds when I was younger,” Francis said. “Take off with their wings coming back and pushing, generating thrust and then rotating up for lift. And when they come in, they turn the other way to stall, tiptoe. That fascinated me.”
His youthful wonder was still intact as he attended the University of Oregon, where he was an accomplished decathlete and baseball player before taking up football. Francis walked 8 miles from the center of campus to Eugene Airport. He knew there was a flight school there and he went straight in.
“There are guys in there smoking cigars, gray-haired guys,” Francis recalled. “I said I have no money. And they said, “You don’t need money. We’ll get you up.’”
Francis was airborne for the first time on a Monday. On Friday of this week he undertook his first solo flight.
School owner Milt Ruburg took a liking to the then 21-year-old athlete. He was a co-signer on Francis’ first aircraft purchase. Francis needed a larger plane to fit in his 6ft 6in frame.
When Ruburg died, Francis kept the school running.
“The name of the company is McKenzie Flying Service. Same name – I stole it in honor of Milt,” Francis said.
His love of the air led to a passion for skydiving. Francis has more than 3,000 jumps under his belt.
“It’s like being a bird,” Francis said, radiating the satisfaction of a dream come true.
Francis was selected in the first round of the 1975 NFL draft – a dream come true for many young athletes – despite only playing one full season of college football. His career with the Patriots included two playoff games that came with his Pro Bowl selection. He was considered by some to be the best tight end in the game when he first retired at the age of 28.
When Francis announced he was leaving football on legendary sportscaster Howard Cosell’s SportsBeat show, the two had nurtured a relationship, appearing together in ABC Sports’ Superstars competition. Cosell had seen enough to get Francis a place on the network.
Francis named college football games with another broadcast legend, Keith Jackson. He was also set to work for the 1984 Olympics, and Francis was in line for the coveted Monday Night Football job.
When Walsh recruited Francis, it was after the retired tight end interviewed him at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii — the state where Francis grew up. Walsh opened his pitch by imagining a Super Bowl win. His 49ers had won the NFL title the year before. Franz said no. He didn’t care. Walsh went one step further.
“He (Walsh) said, ‘You’ll never in your life get a chance to work with people who are as committed to getting better every day as these players are. Since you’re not interested in Super Bowl victories, how about being the best in the league or the world at your job? Who can tell?
“I thought about it and said damn it, he’s right. These guys are the best at what they do. I handed over the Monday Night Football appearance and the 1984 Olympics,” said Francis, a member of the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. Francis played six seasons in San Francisco. He had five catches for 60 yards in the team’s Super Bowl XIX win.

Early life[edit]
Francis began high school at Kailua High School on Oahu, Hawaii and graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in Oregon, southeast of Eugene. As a senior, he set the national high school record for javelin in 1971 with 259 ft 9 in (79.17 m). the record stood until 1988.[3] Francis was also a decathlete for Pleasant Hill.
At the University of Oregon in Eugene, Francis threw the javelin at 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) and played just 14 games of varsity football for the Ducks. Injured after three games as a sophomore in 1972, he played in 1973,[4] but sat out his senior season in 1974. [5]
He enrolled at rival Oregon State University in Corvallis to lose his college eligibility and qualify for the 1975 NFL draft. Briefly a professional wrestler,[7] he trained for the Superstars competition and was selected in the first round by the New England Patriots, the 16th overall pick, and signed in May.[8]

New England Patriots (1975–1980) [ edit ]
During the 1976 Patriots’ 30-27 win over two-time defending champions Pittsburgh Steelers on September 26, Francis caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Steve Grogan on fourth-and-one. In the same game, Francis had a career-best 139 yards.[9] As a result, Howard Cosell proclaimed him the “All-World Tight End”.
In 1980, in the Patriots’ 34-21 win over the New York Jets on November 2, Francis caught a 23-yard pass from Harold Jackson in a wide receiver reverse option game. He caught a 12-yard pass from WR Harold Jackson, on the same wide receiver reverse option play in the Pats’ 16-13 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football on December 8.
In 1978, Francis had a 53-yard reception and 126 yards that were the longest of his career on September 24 in the Patriots’ 21–14 win over the Oakland Raiders at the Oakland Coliseum on September 24. He led the Patriots in receptions that season with 39 catches for 543 yards.
Francis was a Pro Bowl selection for three consecutive seasons (1977–1979).
After the 1980 season, Francis retired from professional football.[10] Two things that Francis said greatly contributed to this decision was when the Patriots refused to give him his promised Pro Bowl bonus (because his injury from a motorcycle accident kept him out of the game held); and second, when his roommate Darryl Stingley was paralyzed by a Jack Tatum hit in August 1978,[11] the Patriots attempted to terminate Stingley’s health insurance. Francis was the first teammate at Stingley’s side immediately after the goal and he has said it was difficult to continue playing after that.[12]
Francis was traded to the defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers for a draft pick the Patriots used to select future Hall of Famer linebacker Andre Tippett.
San Francisco 49ers (1982–1987) [ edit ]
After leaving the Patriots, Francis got a job at ABC Sports. While in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl, Francis interviewed 49ers head coach Bill Walsh. Walsh told him this was the only time in his life he could play football and that he would never get those years back and shouldn’t turn his back on the opportunity. Francis came out of retirement after sitting out the 1981 season, joined the 49ers, and eventually won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 1984 49ers. Francis played a key role in San Francisco’s win over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX (5 catches for 60 yards). In 1985, Francis had a career-high 44 receptions.
New England Patriots (1987–1988)[edit]
After being waived by the 49ers during the 1987 season, Francis signed with his old team, the Patriots, before the final game of the season. However, his second New England tenure was less successful than his first, and he only played one more season. Francis spent 1989 injured before being fired[14] and retiring.

After retirement, he hosted The Russ Francis Show from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on 107.7 WTPL “The Pulse” from Concord, New Hampshire, and later he hosted Forever West Outdoors from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 2:00 p.m. 12:00 am KODI from Cody. In 2000, Francis challenged longtime Democratic incumbent Patsy Mink for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district. Running as a Republican, Francis was defeated, winning 35.97% of the vote to Minks’ 61.59%. Mink was elected posthumously after she died a week after winning the 2002 primary, too late to have her name removed from the general election ballot. Her vacant seat was filled by Ed Case after a special election on January 4, 2003.[17]
