Sabrina Claudio

American singer and songwriter

musical artist

Sabrina Claudio (born September 19, 1996) is an American singer and songwriter.[1][2] In late 2016, Claudio uploaded several songs to SoundCloud before assembling a select collection as part of her extended debut track Confidently Lost, which was independently released in March 2017. Her single “Unravel Me” peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists Chart and her single “Belong to You” peaked at number two and was certified Gold by the RIAA. Their debut mixtape, About Time, was released on October 5, 2017. It peaked at number 13 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Life and career[edit]

Claudio grew up in Fort Lauderdale. She is of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. She later moved to Los Angeles where she began her music career in earnest.[3] She first began recording and posting video covers on Twitter and YouTube before moving on to original tracks, which she released on SoundCloud.[4] Throughout 2016, Claudio released several singles including “Runnin’ Thru Lovers”,[5] “Orion’s Belt”[6] and Confidently Lost.[7]

These songs would form part of her EP Confidently Lost, which she originally released independently on SoundCloud. The EP was released in March 2017 through SC Entertainment.[8] In May 2017, she released a single, “Unravel Me”, from an upcoming project to be released later in 2017.[9] The song peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart. She released another single for this project entitled “Belong to You” in July 2017, which reached #2 on the same chart.[8]

In August 2017, it was announced that Claudio would be touring North America with 6lack on his Free 6lack Tour.

On October 5, 2017, Claudio’s first full-length digital mixtape, About Time, was officially released. The mixtape is supported by the singles “Unravel Me” and “Belong to You”.[11] From October to November 2017, Apple Music promoted Claudio as their Up Next artist, a series that focuses on groundbreaking artists by documenting their journey, inspiration and influences through exclusive interviews, live performances and a mini-documentary.[12 ]

On April 2, 2018, Claudio released the single “All to You”, followed by “Don’t Let Me Down” with Khalid on April 4. Her debut studio album No Rain, No Flowers was released on August 15, 2018 from the single Messages From Her.[13][14] Their management is SAL&CO/Neal Atweh.

controversy[edit]

In April 2018, a series of screenshots began circulating on the social media app Twitter showing Claudio’s alleged use of multiple racial slurs and other offensive language towards minorities.[15][16][17][18] She was also accused of using a second account on Twitter to spread racist messages.[19] Claudio has since apologized for her actions on Twitter.[20]

Sabrina Claudio Went from Posting YouTube Covers to Being R&B’s Rising Star

“Lazy, sexy, comfort” sums up Sabrina Claudio’s personal style, which is characterized by slip dresses, figure-hugging silhouettes, deep necklines, nude colors and soft textures; but she could almost describe her music the same way – the chilled melodies, sensual lyrics, relaxing sounds and all.

Except that there’s nothing “lazy” about Claudio’s approach to music. The 21-year-old and self-proclaimed “high achiever” began posting YouTube covers at age 14 to boost her singing career after her pursuits of dancing and modeling faltered. Two and a half years ago, she moved to Los Angeles from her hometown of Miami to pursue music full-time. She officially released her debut EP Confidently Lost in March and followed up with her second project About Time last month after working on it for over a year.

“I work on my own music every day,” says Claudio in our interview. So laziness is out of the question with their work ethic. But their cool, sultry vibe is mesmerizingly nonchalant, permeating their sound, looks and fashion sense.

Claudio’s smoky vocals and sparkling riffs pair perfectly with the soulful groove of her laid-back beats and shine on hits like “Confidently Lost,” “Unravel Me,” and “Belong to You.” It’s obvious she listened to R&B growing up (she listened to Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Usher, T-Pain and her father’s old-school favorites), but she also notes jazz and bossa nova as musical influences that are evident on songs like “Wait” and “Used To”. Her exposure to Latin music in Miami, such as salsa and merengue, also influenced her. “When I find people who are influenced by that musically, we kind of feed off of each other,” she adds. The result is a seductive fusion of sounds.

In addition to her loyal online fan base, Claudio’s breakout peers such as Khalid, Daniel Casear and 6lack, for whom she opens on her very first tour, are already praising her. It’s only a matter of time before everyone else follows suit.

Claudio says she’s had “only positive feedback” since the release of About Time in October.

“I don’t usually look at charts or anything like that, but my team does. They look at it and are super proud of it, which makes me even happier. In addition, the fan base is growing. The fans I had before are so proud and happy that the project is out. That’s always rewarding.”

She’s risen to viral fame over the past two years, but her success doesn’t surprise her.

“I feel like I always imagined it happening and I knew I would get to this point just because I’m always working. I’m a go-getter so it will happen anyway, but I didn’t expect it to happen as quickly as it did. Now that everything is going so fast, I’m just trying to absorb everything and not get lost in it. It had to happen. I didn’t want to let it not happen.”

Claudio started uploading covers to YouTube when she was 14 and to Instagram and Twitter when she was about 17, but she has always been writing her own music. In 2015, she stopped singing other people’s songs and started releasing her own.

“I was like, ‘You know what, I don’t want to be known for covers anymore, I put out original music, I want to be known as an artist, as an individual.’ I haven’t really posted covers like that since then. That’s really what my following started; I started out on YouTube, but I think because the videos on Twitter are much shorter and people’s attention spans aren’t [very long]. Twitter has really helped me with the following.”

Thankfully, fans of her covers also became fans of her original work, which was her plan from the start.

“It was the best thing to put out original music. I didn’t even know what to expect from it. I knew I had a following of sorts, that they were loyal to my YouTube page and my covers, so I figured they would be loyal to my original music. The fact that it grew so fast was something I just didn’t have in my head, but it happened and I’m still trying to understand how.

“I was just trying to get out of there. I figured I would get as many followings as I could and by the time I was ready to put something out at least someone would hear. You gotta do what you gotta do.”

About Time’s focus is literally what the title suggests.

“The project is called About Time because I unconsciously wrote every song that was conceptually related to time in any way. During this period, this whole year of writing, for some reason I worried about the time. It translated through the music and I didn’t realize what the project was about until I finished putting the songs together. I was confused. I was like, ‘It’s just a group of songs.’ I didn’t really go into the sessions thinking about a specific concept for the project. It just happened subconsciously and I realized it after the whole project was put together.

“A lot of people think it’s called About Time because it’s ‘about time’ that I put out more music. It’s not really about that.”

Her writing process is very collaborative, but she keeps a tight circle.

“For this project, I actually wrote most of the songs by myself, but there was one writer that I wrote three songs with who wrote the whole first project with me. I’m not even going to lie, I walk into a room and let the producers guide me. Of course there is always a basis. They know my sound, they know what I want, but I like being in a space where nobody thinks too much and everyone has the freedom to do what they’re good at.

“My circle is narrow because I don’t trust a lot of people and a lot of people don’t really understand. When I find that group of people who get it, it’s like they’re stuck for the rest of their lives.”

“My circle is narrow because I don’t trust many people”

Her parents introduced her to music despite not being in the industry – they have a medical career.

“They are interested in music because they love it, not because they play it. They work in the medical field, but they love music. My dad is the reason I do R&B. I haven’t heard anything else. Literally nothing else.”

However, they haven’t pressured Sabrina to follow her career path.

“My family is actually super supportive. I’m not a school girl, period. I knew this was never what I wanted to do. Before I sang, I danced and modeled, or at least tried to. I’ve always been into some kind of art, so this should be it. They knew it would never be anything else. When I decided that music is what I want to do for the rest of my life, they supported me. They didn’t push me to do anything else.”

“I’ve matured, but before that, singing wasn’t something I thought would happen”

Claudio didn’t even know she could sing well until she saw the reactions online.

“I didn’t always sound like that. I’ve matured, but before that, singing wasn’t something I thought would happen or engage in. After that first cover, it was like ‘done’. That’s it.'”

Flowers are a recurring motif in Claudio’s latest project. They appear in their artworks, images and texts.

“Flowers are just a natural thing in my life. I’m so attracted to them, just in every video I make, in every frame, there are flowers in there for some reason. I do not know why. I felt it was the best description to describe the project visually as well because the cover with the dry dead roses and me with the living roses has to do with time. Eventually everything will come together.”

Yes, she shot her music video “Unravel Me” with live butterflies.

“I’m not a bug person, but I can handle butterflies because they’re kind of cute. It was a tough shoot. They were flying all over the place, my manager was around with a net trying to catch them all.

“All these shots in the video are the few good ones we got. I definitely didn’t want fake butterflies. You can say. It was fun. It was something completely different.”

Nothing compares to seeing her fans sing her songs in person.

“Just going on stage and seeing people sing your lyrics and sing the songs you wrote is a whole different experience. You’re in the studio writing songs and you’re like, “Oh, I’m so proud of this, I can’t wait for people to hear it.” You see people hearing it online, but then you do when you see them in person , they know all the words and they relate to them – you can’t describe the feeling. Honestly.”

She rarely listens to other artists while working on her own music.

“I work on my own music every day. I’m pretty much always working on it, so it’s like after I get out of the studio I just want silence. I’m annoyed by the sound, so unfortunately I don’t give anyone the time. I’ll be out with that very soon. I’m in project release mode right now.”

Claudio credits her stylist Kristine Urzua with her “lazy sexy cool” aesthetic. They’ve been working together for almost a year, opting for under-the-radar brands like Keepsake the Label and The Line by K. (They don’t shy away from affordable labels, either; Claudio wore Zara and Aldo in a music video.)

“I’m not a fashion person, but I would describe my style as very neutral. I love a good silk petticoat. I wear one in almost every video. I like simple but neutral colors. It is what it is. Luckily I have a stylist so I don’t have to worry. It’s really stressful.

“There is always some kind of mood board for everything we do. Every event, every show, every photo shoot. I literally tell her what I want and she just makes it happen. That’s the strangest thing.”

This content is imported from Instagram. You may find the same content in a different format or more information on their website.

She has a similar minimalist philosophy when it comes to makeup, which usually consists of a bold lip and little else. Her voluminous brunette locks are the main event.

“I don’t do well with keeping up with my face all day. The less I have to do, the better. Also, I don’t know how to put on makeup. If I did that, I’d do my eyebrows every day, girl. It’s a whole thing.”

Expect a lot more from Claudio in the near future.

“I think I will get back to work on the music for the album I plan to release next year. Maybe I’ll have my own headlining tour and whatever else comes when my music comes out. I never know, so many things happen so fast it’s almost impossible to predict what’s going to happen. Another project and a headlining tour are goals for me. life goals.”
