Shotgun Willie is the sixteenth studio album by Willie Nelson, released in 1973. The recording marks a change in style for Nelson, who later stated that the album “cleared his throat”. When Nelson refused to sign an early contract extension with RCA Records in 1972, the label decided not to release any more recordings. Nelson hired Neil Reshen as his manager, and while Reshen was negotiating with RCA, Nelson relocated to Austin, Texas, where the lingering hippie music scene at Armadillo World Headquarters renewed his musical style. In Nashville, Nelson met Atlantic Records VP producer Jerry Wexler, who was interested in his music. Reshen resolved the issues with RCA and signed Nelson to Atlantic Records as their first country artist.
The album was recorded in February 1973 at Atlantic Records studios in New York City. Nelson and his backup musicians, The Family, were joined by Doug Sahm and his band. After recording several tracks, Nelson was still uninspired. In the bathroom of his hotel room after a recording session, he wrote “Shotgun Willie” – the song that would become the album’s title track – on an empty sanitary napkin wrapper. The album, produced primarily by Arif Mardin with assistance from Wexler and longtime Neil Young collaborator David Briggs, featured covers of two Bob Wills songs – “Stay All Night (Stay a Little Longer)” and “Bubbles in My Beer” – which is co-manufactured by Wexler. Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter collaborated on the album, providing vocals and guitar.
Shotgun Willie was released in June 1973. Despite poor sales, the album received good reviews and gained Nelson widespread recognition among a younger audience. The recording was one of the first outlaw country albums – a new subgenre of country music and an alternative to the conservative limitations of the Nashville sound, the genre’s dominant style at the time.

In April 1972, after Nelson recorded “Mountain Dew”, his final single from RCA Records. The label asked Nelson to renew his contract early, telling him they would not be releasing any more recordings unless he signed. Nelson’s manager Neil Reshen negotiated an agreement with RCA Records to end the contract after returning $1,400 that the singer had overpaid. By this time, Nelson had left Nashville and moved to Austin, Texas. Austin’s burgeoning hippie music scene at venues like Armadillo World Headquarters rejuvenated the singer. His popularity in Austin rose as he performed his own music, which was a mix of country, folk, and jazz influences. Nelson felt creatively paralyzed by RCA’s strict recording practices and frustrated at not being able to use his touring band in the studio. In 2015, Nelson recalled moving to Austin: “I liked this new world. She was a perfect fit for me. I never liked putting on stage costumes, I never liked neat haircuts, I never worried about whether I met the requirements of a showman. It felt good to let my hair grow. It felt good to be on stage in the same pair of jeans I’d been wearing all damn day.”
During a trip to Nashville, Tennessee, Nelson attended a party at Harlan Howard’s house, where he sang the songs he had written for the Phases and Stages album. Another guest was Atlantic Records vice president Jerry Wexler, who had previously produced works for artists such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. Wexler was interested in Nelson’s music, and when Atlantic opened a country music division of their label, he offered Nelson a deal that gave him more creative control than his deal with RCA. When Nelson asked Wexler if he was worried about the music not being commercial, Wexler replied, “Fuck Commerce. You strive for art. You seek the truth.” In his autobiography, Nelson later recalled, “I had never heard a record man talk like that. I immediately decided Wexler was my man.” When Nelson was released from his RCA contract, he signed with Atlantic for $25,000 a year and became the label’s first country artist.

The recording sessions took place in February 1973. Wexler provided Nelson and his band with a studio in New York City, where most of the recordings were produced.[8] Parts of the album were also recorded at Quadraphonic Studios in Nashville and Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis. Doug Sahm and his band were also invited to the New York sessions. During the first session, Nelson recorded the songs for The Troublemaker. He later went on to do Shotgun Willie.[8]

After the gospel album had been recorded, Wexler had encouraged Nelson to start on the new one, combining and covering old material with new. He initially recorded twenty-three tracks along with his and Sahm’s band, but Nelson was still uninspired. He wrote the title track after one of the sessions. He paced his hotel room, went into the bathroom, where he sat on the toilet and took an empty sanitary napkin envelope from the sink and wrote the song on it. The song’s title refers to the nickname Nelson received after his daughter Susie warned him about the domestic violence suffered by her sister Lana. Nelson drove to Lana’s house where he fought with her husband Steve Warren and threatened to kill him if he repeated the attack. Shortly after Nelson returned home, Warren arrived in his truck with his brothers. The men fired at the house with .22 caliber rifles. In response, Nelson and Paul English fired at the attackers, who retreated. When they later returned, Nelson took the English M1 Garand and fired on the truck causing them to surrender. He completed the rest of the song with a reference to John T. Floore, owner of the honky-tonk Floore’s Country Store. After hearing the finished song, Wexler decided the album should be named after it. Nelson later recalled, “Kris Kristofferson later told me the song ‘Shotgun Willie’ was ‘Mind Farts.’ Maybe yes, but I took it more as a throat clear.”

Most of the tracks were produced by Arif Mardin, with the exception of the two Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys covers “Stay All Night (Stay a Little Longer)” and “Bubbles in My Beer”, which were produced by Mardin and Jerry Wexler. In his biographical book on Nelson, Joe Nick Patoski noted that the album’s recording was “sloppy and chaotic, technically and artistically inconsistent, with horns and strings occasionally clashing with the musical core of Bee Spears, Paul English, Bobbie Nelson, Jimmy Day and.” Willie… The music was more country than what was playing on the radio, but somehow different. If there were slips and mistakes, they stayed in.” The album included Johnny Bush’s “Whiskey River,” which later became Nelson’s show opener. Nelson recalled in his autobiography: “In 1972, Johnny Bush called me with part of a song he had written with Paul Stroud. I took the song for what it was but adapted it to suit my style, which was more blues than rock.” Shotgun Willie also included “A Song for You,” written by Leon Russell. The song became a number often performed by Nelson. Nelson added, “He blew me away … I understood how his image — with his crazy stovepipe hat and dark aviator shades — added to his mysterious appeal. Beyond the mystery, however, I heard his musical roots were the same as mine: Hank Williams, Bob Wills, country black blues…”
Nelson later stated that with Wexler’s production he “cranked out songs one after the other” and that “the atmosphere was right”. The singer added, “I felt free to let my imagination run wild, with no limits.” There were rumors during the recording that there would be performances by George Jones, Leon Russell and Kris Kristofferson, but these ultimately didn’t happen. Waylon Jennings joined the backing band, playing guitar and providing backing vocals along with Jessi Colter and Doug Sahm for “Stay All Night (Stay a Little Longer)”. Several journalists were present during the recording. Creem’s Ed Ward later commented, “I had underestimated the professionalism of everyone involved, let alone the core ensemble of musicians themselves, who decided to test the studio’s sound with a spirited version of ‘Under the Double Eagle’ which impressed me: Willie wasn’t just a great songwriter, he was a goddamn virtuoso on his battered Martin guitar!”

When the album was released in June 1973, it received good reviews but did not sell well. Meanwhile, more copies have been sold in Austin than previous Nelson records have sold anywhere in the country. The recording introduced the singer to a new style; He later stated in reference to his new musical identity that Shotgun Willie “cleared his throat”. It became his seminal record and one of the first of the outlaw movement, music made without the influence of the conservative Nashville sound. The album – the first to feature Nelson with long hair and a beard on the cover – caught the interest of a younger audience. It peaked at number 41 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums, and the songs “Shotgun Willie” and “Stay All Night (Stay A Little Longer)” peaked at number 60 and 22, respectively, on Hot Country Songs.
Atlantic Records reissued Shotgun Willie on CD in 1990. It was reissued by the label on CD and LP in 2009 and again on LP and digital download in 2021.
Critical reception[ edit ]
Rolling Stone called the album “flawless” and felt that Nelson “finally demonstrates why he has long been viewed as a singer-songwriter of a country and western singer-songwriter.” The reviewer concluded: “At the age of 39, Nelson seems finally destined for the fame he deserves.”[30] Robert Christgau wrote: “This attempt to make Nelson a star runs into trouble, when tempted to drown out Memphis horns or western swing.”[31] Billboard wrote, “This is Willie Nelson at his best. He writes and sings along with the love and pain and the down-to-earth things he’s feeling, and he has a few colleagues.” [32] Texas Monthly praised Nelson and Wexler for the change in musical style: “You’ve got his arrangements of Ray Price changed to Ray Charles—result: a revived music. He’s the same old Willie, but veteran producer Jerry Wexler has finally captured on wax the energy that Nelson personally projects.”[33]
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram began its review by declaring, “1973 could be the year country music ‘rediscovered’ Willie Nelson.” Critic Bill McAllister noted the support Texas Longhorns football coach Darrell Royal gave Nelson and his music. The reviewer noted that Shotgun Willie “excellently showcases unique musical ability” and noted that Nelson “has often been referred to as country music’s Cole Porter”. The Arizona Republic presented Nelson as “an accomplished baritone and composer” as the publication urged readers to “lend an ear to old shotguns and find out what C&W music sounds like when it’s not sung through the nose or the hat.” “. The Philadelphia Daily News felt that the record had “some ups and downs” but that Nelson made the tracks “real winners”. The publication deemed the singer “real country, not a hip version of it”.
The Detroit Free Press gave a favorable review. Critic Bob Talbert noted that Nelson and country songwriters were “authentic folk poets”. The reviewer described the songs’ content as being written by “Human-type people. Bleeders and drunkards and dreamers and drinkers. Sad people and happy people.” The School Library Journal wrote: “Willie Nelson differs (from) rock artists who frame their music with a country-western facade — in that he comes across as a honky-tonk stardust cowboy through and through with alcohol, religion.” and love gone bad and stereotypical Nashville instrumentation (twangy steel guitars, fiddles, and a clean rhythm section characterized by minimal use of bass drum and cymbals, both of which are huge hits with rock artists).
Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote in his review for AllMusic: “Willie Nelson offered his debut his best record yet – quite possibly his best album of all time. This is laid-back, deceptively complex music, equal parts country, rock attitude, jazz music and troubadour -Storytelling”.[38] Nelson biographer Joe Nick Patoski writes that Shotgun was Willie Nelson’s “creative declaration of independence”.
