Beach Volleyball Player – King of the Beach® Store
Sinjin Smith – The “King of the Beach”
Christopher St. John “Sinjin” Smith is perhaps the greatest beach volleyball player in the history of the sport. Smith is considered by many to be the “face” of modern beach volleyball.
1980 Manhattan Beach Open Champions with Karch Kiraly, Smith won 5 Manhattan Beach Open championship titles.
Smith won his first Open tournament victory in 1977, sitting and kneeling in front of a few spectators who stood around the main plaza at the foot of Marine Avenue in Manhattan Beach. He and his partner “Stormin'” Mike Normand won respect back then, but not a dime in prize money.

Sixteen years later, in 1993, Smith won his 139th and final title in front of crowded Fort Myers, Florida grandstands and a national cable television audience. It was the third stop of a multi-million dollar 25-city professional tour, and Smith and partner Randy Stoklos shared $15,000 for the win. Beach volleyball was on its way to its first Olympic competition in 1996 and an international tour had begun that would eventually globalize the sport.
He and longtime partner Randy Stoklos have won more professional beach tournaments (114) as a team than anyone before or since. There have been exciting victories along the way, including the 1991 Seal Beach doubles final and the 1992 Honolulu Open. Randy Stoklos became the first beach volleyball player to break $1 million at the 1992 Honolulu Open on the beautiful beach.
Sinjin’s 139 career wins rank second all-time among singles players. The “cover boys” of beach volleyball in its heyday, legendary duo Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith dominated the burgeoning sport in the late ’70s, ’80s and ’90s and were a classic fire and ice couple on the court.
Together, Smith and Stoklos won several world championships, including victories in 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1991 in Rio de Janeiro on beautiful Copacabana Beach, site of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Smith and Stoklos have been a big part of some of the greatest rallies of all time in beach volleyball and are the most successful team of all time. The pair won over 50% of the opens they played together and finished in the top three 80% of the time. No team will ever surpass such greatness, and that’s why these two legends in King of the Beach lore are the true Kings of the Beach.
Smith-Stoklos won their historic 100th win together in Sacramento, California, against the team of Tim Hovland and Kent Steffes.
Sinjin has won multiple World Championships, King of the Beach Invitationals, 5 Manhattan Beach Opens and represented the United States at the Olympics.

Sinjin played for the US Indoor National Team for 4 years and was a College All-American at UCLA, where he won two national championships and one final as MVP for the Bruins.
For all his records as a beach volleyball player, Sinjin is perhaps just as well known for his contributions to the game off the court. He was the second volleyball player ever to be inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame. Growing up, Sinjin was a fixture at legendary Sorrento Beach, where he learned the game from pioneers like Ron Von Hagen and Gene Selznick. Sinjin is a longtime resident of Pacific Palisades, where he lives with his wife Patty and the couple’s three children, Hagen, Stanton and Sinjin, Jr. For all his records as a beach volleyball player, Sinjin is perhaps just as well known for his off-court service to the game.
