American actor, martial artist, and filmmaker (born 1952)

This article is about the actor and martial artist. For the animator/filmmaker, see Steve Segal. For the comics author, see Steven T. Seagle

Steven Frederic Seagal (born April 10, 1952) is an American actor, screenwriter, and martial artist. A 7th dan black Aikido belt, he began his adult life as a martial arts instructor in Japan[1] and became the first foreigner to run an Aikido dojo in the country.[2] He later moved to Los Angeles, where he pursued the same profession. In 1988, Seagal made his acting debut in Above the Law. By 1991 he had acted in four films. In 1992, he played Navy SEAL counterterrorism expert Casey Ryback in Under Siege. During the second half of the 1990s, Seagal starred in three more feature films and the direct-to-video film The Patriot. Subsequently, his career shifted primarily to direct-to-video productions. He has since appeared in films and reality shows, including Steven Seagal: Lawman, in which Seagal fulfills his duties as a reserve deputy sheriff.

Seagal is a guitarist and has released two studio albums, Songs from the Crystal Cave and Mojo Priest, and has contributed to the scores of several of his films. He has worked with Stevie Wonder and Tony Rebel, both of whom appeared on his debut album. He has also been involved with a range of “therapeutic oil” products and energy drinks. In addition, Seagal is an environmentalist,[3] animal rights activist and supporter of the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso.[4][5] He is a supporter of Vladimir Putin, whom he once described as “one of the great leaders of the living world.”[6] In 2016 he received both Russian[7] and Serbian citizenship. In 2018 he was appointed Russia’s special envoy to the United States[8].

From 1996 to 2018, several women accused Seagal of sexual harassment or assault.[9][10]

Early life

Steven Frederic Seagal was born on April 10, 1952 in Lansing, Michigan to Patricia (1930–2003), a medical technician, and Samuel Seagal (1928–1991), a math teacher. His mother was of Irish descent while his father was Jewish.[12] His paternal grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants.[13] When he was five years old, he moved to Fullerton, California with his parents. His mother later told People magazine that before the move, Seagal was frail and suffered from asthma: “He was a frail kid at the time. Seagal attended Buena Park High School in Buena Park, California and Fullerton College between 1970 and 1971. As a teenager, he spent a lot of time in his garage listening to loud rock music. But while working with a friendly old Japanese man in a dojo in Garden Grove, he was encouraged to visit Japan.[14]

martial arts

Seagal moved to Japan sometime between 1971 and 1973. In 1974 he returned to California. That year he met Miyako Fujitani, a second-degree black belt and daughter of an Osaka aikido master who had come to Los Angeles to teach aikido. When Miyako returned to Osaka, Seagal went with her. The following year they married and had a son, Kentaro, and a daughter, Ayako. He taught at Miyako’s family school (although it is often said that he was the first non-East Asian to open a dojo in Japan). As of 1990, Miyako and her brother were still teaching there, and her mother was the chair.[14]

Seagal initially returned to Taos, New Mexico, with his student (and later film stuntman) Craig Dunn, where they opened a dojo, although Seagal spent much of his time pursuing other ventures. After another stint in Japan, Seagal returned to the United States in 1983 with senior student Haruo Matsuoka. They opened an aikido dojo, first in North Hollywood, California, but later moved to the city of West Hollywood. Seagal left Matsuoka in charge of the dojo, which the latter ran until the two parted ways in 1997.

Seagal helped train Brazilian mixed martial artist Lyoto Machida, who credited Seagal with helping him perfect the front kick he used to take out Randy Couture at UFC 129 in May 2011.

Career

1987-2002

In 1987, Seagal began work on his first film, Above the Law (titled Nico in Europe), with director Andrew Davis.[20] After its success, Seagal’s subsequent films were Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, and Out for Justice; All were box office hits, making him an action hero. He later achieved wider mainstream success with the 1992 release of Under Siege (1992), which reunited Seagal with director Andrew Davis.

Seagal hosted the April 20, 1991 episode of the late-night variety show Saturday Night Live, which aired as the 18th episode of season 16. The series’ longtime producer Lorne Michaels and cast members David Spade and Tim Meadows considered Seagal the worst host of all time. Spade and Meadows cite Seagal’s lack of humor, his mistreatment of the show’s cast and writers, and his refusal to do a “John and Franz” sketch because the title characters of that skit indicated they could beat up Seagal. Seagal was never invited back to the show after this episode. Meadows commented, “He didn’t know you couldn’t tell someone they were stupid on Wednesday and expect them to keep writing for you on Saturday.” [22] The cast and crew’s difficulties with Seagal were later surfaced Broadcast repeatedly by Michaels during guest host Nicolas Cage’s monologue in the season 18 premiere on September 26, 1992. When Cage feared he would do so poorly that audiences dubbed him “the biggest jerk ever on the show occurred,” Michaels replied, “No, no. That would be Steven Seagal.”[23]

Seagal directed and starred in On Deadly Ground (1994), with Michael Caine, R. Lee Ermey and Billy Bob Thornton in minor supporting roles. The film emphasized environmental and spiritual themes and signaled a break from his earlier role as a genre-ready inner-city cop. On Deadly Ground was poorly received by critics,[24] notably denouncing Seagal’s lengthy environmental speech in the film. Regardless, Seagal considers it one of the most important and relevant moments of his career. Seagal followed up with a sequel to one of his highest-grossing films, Under Siege, entitled Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995). In 1996, he had a role in the Kurt Russell film Executive Decision, in which he portrayed a special ops soldier who only appears in the first 45 minutes of the film. In the same year he directed a police drama The Glimmer Man (1996). In another environmentally conscious and commercially unsuccessful film, Fire Down Below (1997), he played an agent from the EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance fighting industrialists who dump toxic waste in the hills of Kentucky.

In 1998, Seagal made The Patriot, another environmental thriller that was his first direct-to-video release in the United States (although it was released theatrically in most parts of the world). Seagal produced this film with his own money, and the film was shot on location at and near his Montana farm.

After producing Prince of Central Park, Seagal returned to cinema screens with the March 2001 release of Exit Wounds. The film had fewer martial arts scenes than Seagal’s previous films, but was a commercial success, grossing nearly $80 million worldwide. However, he was unable to capitalize on this success and his next two projects were both critical and commercial failures. The film Ticker, starring Tom Sizemore and Dennis Hopper, was shot in San Francisco before Exit Wounds and went straight to DVD. Half Past Dead, starring hip-hop star Ja Rule, grossed less than $20 million worldwide.

2003 to present: Direct-to-video films and television

Aside from his role as the villain in Robert Rodriguez’ Machete, all films Seagal has made since the second half of 2001 have been released direct-to-video (DTV) in North America, with some theatrical releases in other countries around the world. Seagal is credited with producing and sometimes writing many of these DTV films, including Black Dawn, Belly of the Beast, Out of Reach, Submerged, Kill Switch, Urban Justice, Pistol Whipped, Against the Dark, Driven to Kill, A Dangerous Man, Born to Raise Hell and The Keeper.

In 2009, A&E Network premiered the reality television series Steven Seagal: Lawman, centered on Seagal as a stand-in in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

In the 2010s, Seagal’s direct-to-video films increasingly became ensemble plays, in which Seagal played supporting or supporting roles, although he often received top billing. Maximum Conviction, Force of Execution, Gutshot Straight, Code of Honor, Sniper: Special Ops, The Asian Connection, The Perfect Weapon, Cartels, and China Salesman illustrate this trend. This has led some commentators to criticize Seagal for his effortless participation in films that heavily promote his involvement.

In 2011, Seagal produced and starred in an American television action series titled True Justice. The series first aired on May 12, 2011 on Nitro, a TV channel in Spain.[27] It premiered in the UK on 5 USA, the first episode aired on July 20, 2011. On April 26, 2012, the series was renewed for a second season, which aired on ReelzChannel on July 4, 2012. In the UK, True Justice has been repackaged as a series of DVD “movies”, with each disc having two episodes edited together.

themes and motives

Many of Seagal’s films share unique elements that have become distinctive to his work. Its characters often have elite prior affiliations with the CIA, Special Forces, or Black Ops (e.g., Casey Ryback in Under Siege, a former Navy SEAL, Jack Cole in The Glimmer Man, a former CIA cop, or Jonathan Cold in The Foreigner and Black Dawn, a former CIA Black Ops freelancer). His characters differ from those of other action film icons in their near invulnerability; They almost never face significant physical threat, effortlessly overpower any opposition, and never face physical injury or even temporary defeat.[30] A notable exception is 2010’s Machete, in which Seagal plays a rare villainous role.[31]

In 2008, author and critic Vern (no last name) published Seagalogy, a work that examines Seagal’s filmography within the framework of author theory. The book divides Seagal’s filmography into various chronological “epochs” with different thematic elements. The book was updated in 2012 to include recent films and Seagal’s work on the reality TV show Steven Seagal: Lawman.[32]

Other ventures

music

Seegal in 2007

Seagal plays the guitar. His songs have been featured in several of his films including Fire Down Below and Ticker. His extensive collection includes guitars previously owned by “the Kings”; Albert, BB, and Freddie, as well as Bo Diddley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix.[33]

In 2005 he released his first album Songs from the Crystal Cave, which contains a mix of pop, world, country and blues music. It includes duets with Tony Rebel, Lt. Stichie, Lady Saw and Stevie Wonder. The soundtrack to Seagal’s 2005 film Into the Sun features several songs from the album. One of his album tracks, “Girl It’s Alright”, was also released as a single in several countries, along with an accompanying music video. Seagal’s second album, titled Mojo Priest, was released in April 2006. He then spent the summer of 2006 touring the US and Europe with his band Thunderbox in support of the album.

law enforcement work

Seagal was deputy chief of the reserve in the Jefferson Parish, Louisiana Sheriff’s Office. In the late 1980s, after teaching martial arts, unarmed combat, and marksmanship to the deputies, then-Sheriff Harry Lee (1932–2007) was so impressed that he asked Seagal to join the force. Seagal is said to have graduated from a Los Angeles Police Academy over twenty years ago and has a certificate from Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST), an organization that accredits California police officers. However, POST officials in California and Louisiana have no record of Seagal being certified, and Seagal’s rank in Louisiana is therefore ceremonial.

Steven Seagal: Lawman, a series that follows his work at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, premiered on A&E on December 2, 2009. Seagal explained, “I’ve made the decision to work with A&E on this series now because I think it’s important to show the nation, to see all the positive work that’s being done here in Louisiana — to see the passion.” and to see the dedication shown by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in this post-Katrina environment. The series premiere attracted 3.6 million viewers, ranking it as the best season opener of any A&E original series of all time.[35]

On April 14, 2010, the series was suspended by Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand due to a sex trafficking lawsuit filed against Seagal. The suit was later dropped.[36] A&E continued the show for the second season, which began October 6, 2010.

Production on the third season began in February 2011, relocating from Louisiana to Maricopa County, Arizona.[37] Two episodes were scheduled to air beginning January 4, 2012.[38] Season 3 was suspended with no explanation just before the episodes were due to air. Season 3 premiered on January 2, 2014, but the show was not renewed for a fourth season.

In October 2011, Seagal was sworn in as deputy sheriff for the Hudspeth County, Texas Sheriff’s Department, a legal department responsible for patrolling a 98-mile stretch of the Texas-Mexico border.[40]

Penor Rinpoche responded to the controversy by saying that although Seagal acted in violent films, he had not actually killed any people and that Seagal was merely acknowledged, while enthroning him as a tulku would first require a “long process of study and practice”. .[50] ]

Lawsuit 2010

On April 12, 2010, 23-year-old Kayden Nguyen filed a lawsuit against Seagal in a Los Angeles district court, seeking more than $1 million in damages. In her lawsuit, Nguyen alleged that Seagal was involved in sexual harassment, illegal trafficking of women for sex, failure to prevent sexual harassment, and wrongful termination. Seagal denied the allegations, but his reality show Steven Seagal: Lawman was suspended while his attorneys solved the case.[73] On July 14, 2010, three months after Nguyen filed her lawsuit, she withdrew her lawsuit without justification.[75][76]

2011 court case

On August 30, 2011, Jesus Sanchez Llovera filed a lawsuit against Seagal for his involvement in a Maricopa County police raid with heavy weapons (specifically, a surplus army tank) at Llovera’s residence on suspicion of cockfighting. The incident was chronicled for Seagal’s A&E reality show Steven Seagal: Lawman. Llovera demanded $100,000 for damage caused during the raid and a letter of apology from Seagal to Llovera’s children for the death of their pet. Llovera claimed his 11-month-old puppy was shot dead during the raid.[77] Llovera failed to file court-ordered filings after his attorney withdrew from the case and the lawsuit was dismissed in January 2013.[78]

allegations 2017

In 2017, actress Portia de Rossi accused Seagal of sexually harassing her during a film audition. Without admitting or denying the SEC’s findings, Seagal agreed to pay $157,000 in disgorgement, which is the actual payments he received for his promotions, plus pre-judgment interest and a $157,000 penalty U.S. dollar. Seagal also agreed not to promote securities, digitally or otherwise, for three years.[86][87]

victim of attempted extortion

Steven Seagal became embroiled in a legal battle involving film producer Julius R. Nasso after Nasso attempted to blackmail Seagal. Nasso produced seven of Seagal’s films, beginning with Marked for Death in 1990. The two “became best friends,” according to Seagal, and together formed Seagal/Nasso Productions. However, their relationship became strained and their partnership ended in 2000. Believing Seagal owed him $3 million in compensation for withdrawing from a four-movie deal, Nasso hired members of the Gambino crime family to threaten Seagal in order to to try to win back money Nasso has reportedly lost. Gambino family captain Anthony Ciccone first visited Seagal in Toronto during filming of Exit Wounds in October 2000.[88] In January 2001, Primo Cassarino and other mobsters picked up Seagal by car to take him to a meeting with Ciccone at a Brooklyn restaurant. At the meeting, Ciccone bluntly told Seagal that he had a choice of doing four promised films with Nasso or paying Nasso a $150,000 fine per film. If Seagal refused, Ciccone would kill him.[89] Seagal, who later claimed he brought a pistol to the meeting, stopped Ciccone and escaped the meeting unharmed.[90] Ciccone and Cassarino revisited Seagal at his Los Angeles home the following month. In the spring of 2001, Seagal sought out another mobster, Genovese crime family captain Angelo Prisco, to act as a “peacemaker”. He visited Prisco in prison in Rahway, New Jersey and paid Prisco’s attorney $10,000.[92]

On March 17, 2003, Cassarino, Ciccone and others were convicted of labor racketeering, racketeering and 63 other counts under the Thug-Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.[93] Seagal testified before the indictment about the gangsters’ extortion attempt.[94] Nasso pleaded guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges in August 2003 and was sentenced to one year and one day in prison in February 2004, fined $75,000 and ordered to seek psychological counseling upon release from prison .[95] In January 2008, Nasso agreed to drop a $60 million lawsuit against Seagal for alleged breach of contract after the two settled out of court.

Conflicts with stuntmen

Seagal has been accused of intentionally hitting stuntmen during scenes by former stunt performers who worked with him, including Kane Hodder, Stephen Quadros and Gene LeBell.

While serving as stunt coordinator for Out for Justice, LeBell allegedly got into an on-set altercation with Seagal over his abuse of some of the film’s stunt performers. After the actor claimed that his aikido training made him “immune” to unconscious asphyxiation, LeBell offered Seagal a chance to prove it. LeBell is said to have wrapped his arms around Seagal’s neck, and when Seagal said “Go,” proceeded to choke him unconscious, with Seagal losing control of his bowels.

LeBell was asked to publicly confirm the on-set incident in a 2012 interview with Ariel Helwani, but he avoided answering the question, although he did imply it was true.[99] He was quoted as saying, “When we were having a little argument or disagreement, thirty stuntmen and cameramen would be watching. Sometimes Steven tends to piss off the wrong people, and that can hurt you.”[100]

On the other hand, when Seagal was asked about the incident, he outright denied the allegations, calling LeBell a “sick, pathological scumbag liar” and providing the name of a witness who could prove Lebell made up the entire story. The allegation received a heated backlash from LeBell’s trainee Ronda Rousey, who said Seagal was the one lying, stating, “If [Seagal] told me something bad about Gene, I would make him pee his pants a second time.” to do.” [102]

Authentic or not, the reports of this incident led to LeBell being counted as an additional member of Robert Wall’s “Dirty Dozen” in 1992, a group of martial artists willing to take on a public challenge from Seagal. However, LeBell declined to take part, revealing that the feud with Seagal hurt him professionally. However, he criticized Seagal for his treatment of stuntmen, leaving open the possibility of a professional fight if Seagal wanted to do so.

Allegations of stuntman abuse have continued throughout Seagal’s later career, with both stuntman Peter Harris Kent (Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stunt double) and Mike Leeder publicly criticizing his on-set antics. Actor John Leguizamo also claimed that during Executive Decision rehearsals, Seagal surprised and pushed him into a brick wall in retaliation for laughing at him. Michael Jai White, who starred with him in a number of films, stated that he regularly beats stuntmen and is known for it. He said they just accepted it. However, he stated that Seagal never hit him.
