Stephen Patrick Mackey (born November 10, 1966) is an English musician and record producer best known for being the bassist for the alternative rock band Pulp, which he joined in 1989. As a record producer, he has produced songs and albums by M.I.A., Florence + The Machine, The Long Blondes and Arcade Fire.

Early life[edit]

Mackey was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. In his early years he attended Hucklow First and Middle School with his friend Richard Hawley. They later played together as members of Pulp. He attended Hinde House Comprehensive in Sheffield before pursuing further studies at Richmond College of Further Education. Before joining Pulp, he played bass for another Sheffield band called Trolley Dog Shag, featured alongside Pulp on a 1987 Dolebusters compilation album. He moved to London in 1988 to pursue filmmaking and graduated with an MA in Film from London’s Royal College of Art in 1992.

Pulp [ edit ]

He joined Pulp in 1989 and played on Separations which was released on Fire Records.[3] He continued to write, record and tour with the band as they found success in the 1990s. Subsequent albums recorded were Intro – The Gift Recordings, His ‘n’ Hers, Different Class, This Is Hardcore and We Love Life. In 2010, after an 8-year hiatus, Mackey returned to activity with Pulp and their subsequent world tours in 2011 and 2012[4] and the release of her single “After You”, collaborating with producer James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem.[5]

Further music career[edit]

He formed a songwriting/production partnership with Ross Orton (known as Cavemen), met Maya Arulpragasam (M.I.A.), and co-wrote and produced “Galang” and “Sunshowers,” which led to MIA signing with Interscope Records graduated and released Arular. . They worked together again on Bird Flu off their follow-up album Kala. Mackey and Orton continued to produce and remix for artists such as Kelis, Cornershop, The Kills and The Horrors. Mackey also produced and wrote songs for Florence and the Machine’s debut album Lungs, including “Kiss With a Fist,” “Girl With One Eye,” and “Swimming,” as well as The Long Blondes’ debut album Someone to Drive You Home . [6] During this time he continued to record with Jarvis Cocker and toured for his debut solo album for Rough Trade Records (Jarvis) in 2006 and again recorded the album Further Complications at Electrical Studios in Chicago in 2008 with Steve Albini ]

In 2011, Mackey produced Summer Camp’s album Welcome to Condale[9] and in 2012 he returned as producer for the Palma Violets’ debut album 180 on Rough Trade Records, which was released in February 2013.[10] Also in 2012, the Willy Moon-produced “Railroad Track” was released on Jack White’s Third Man Records.[11]

In 2014 he recorded and mixed for Dean Blunt’s “Black Metal” album and in 2015 he started working with Yak and recorded their single “No” which was released on Third Man. He mixed Supergrass’s “Take Your Jacket Off and Get into It” LP by Danny Goffey. Yak’s “Alas Salvation” LP was recorded with him throughout the remainder of 2015 and released in early 2016 [12]

In 2017 he was honored with the other members of Pulp with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection[13] presented by Peter Saville, graphic designer of record sleeves for Joy Division, New Order and Pulp

Mackey has also worked with John Gosling (formerly of Psychic TV) as music director and sound designer creating mixes and original compositions for films, museums and other commercial projects[14] including the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Louvre Paris,[ 15 ] and the Minsheng Art Museum Shanghai[16]

In 2005, Mackey had a cameo role as one of the Weird Sisters, a rock band in the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The fictional group also consisted of Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.

In 2006, Mackey and Cocker curated an acclaimed 2-CD compilation called The Trip, featuring music from a variety of eras including Moondog, Carl Orff, The Birthday Party, The Fall and the theme of Radio 4’s Shipping Forecast.

From 2003 to 2008, Mackey co-curated the music program at the annual Frieze International Art Fair in London, which included performances by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sunn O))), Glenn Branca and Rodney Graham.[18]

In 2012, he played with drummer Seb Rochford as the rhythm section on tracks on Serafina Steer’s The Moths Are Real LP.[19]

In 2016 he launched the guerrilla TV project Call This Number with Jeannette Lee, formerly of Public Image Ltd., and Douglas Hart, ex-bassist of the Jesus and Mary Chain, who made irregular film transmissions from a north London garage. Artists he recorded for it included Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Dennis Bovell, Sleaford Mods, Primal Scream and Gruff Rhys.
