Tareq Salahi Wiki Biography
Tareq Dirgham Salahi was born on May 26, 1969 in Washington D.C., USA to Corinne, the founder and principal of the Montessori school in Virginia and of Belgian descent, and Dirgham Salahi, a winery owner of Palestinian descent. He is a former winery owner and winemaker, television personality but perhaps best known for his role on the reality TV show The Real Housewives of D.C.
So how loaded is Tareq Salahi? Sources state that Salahi amassed a net worth of over $2 million as of early 2017, accumulated through his involvement in the entertainment industry and through his various business ventures.
Tareq Salahi and his net worth of $2 million
Salahi grew up in Farquier County, Virginia. He attended Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Virginia, and later enrolled at the University of California, Davis, where he received his BA in oenology and business administration in 1991.
Tareq then returned to Virginia to help run the family business, Oasis Winery, which his parents founded in the 1970’s on their Hume, Virginia estate as one of the first five wineries in the state. Their company eventually grew into a very lucrative business with annual sales of $1 million. Participation in such a successful business brought Salahi a decent salary. He became Managing Director in 1994 and acquired a 5% minority stake in the winery, adding significantly to his fortune.
In the meantime, he started another company called Oasis Enterprises, which was formed to generate side income as a venue for polo events and various other events. It operated a limousine and an events and catering business, as well as wine country tours, greatly enhancing Salahi’s fortunes.
However, his new business eventually led to a conflict within his family. The winery reportedly began losing profits, and the family claimed their assets were misdirected to Oasis Enterprises. They also accused Salahi of claiming to be the president of the winery. Salahi, on the other hand, made counter-accusations against his family. The lawsuits were later dropped without a ruling, but both companies eventually filed for bankruptcy. Oasis Winery’s assets were auctioned off until 2013. However, Salahi later bought back all assets and restarted the business.
Meanwhile, he and then-wife Michaele made headlines in 2009 when they attended an uninvited White House state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Although the couple claimed to have been invited, the Secret Service claimed the opposite; The incident drew legal scrutiny, but it also drew a lot of publicity for Salahi, especially since the couple’s entry into the White House was filmed by Bravo reality TV show The Real Housewives of D.C., since she was part of it at the time of the show’s cast.
In addition, Salahi has appeared on the CW Network’s “Where the Elite Meet” and several other shows. His television engagement was another source of his wealth.
In 2012, Salahi decided to run for governor of Virginia in the 2013 election, first as a Republican but later as an independent and then as a nominee for election. In late 2013, he announced that he would be running as a Republican for Virginia’s 10th congressional district in the 2014 election, later moving to the Independent Greens; he didn’t make it to the vote.
Tareq was also involved in the sport of polo, captaining the US polo team in the ’90s and founding the America’s Polo Cup in 2007.
Salahi currently operates several businesses including Hotels at Sea, a cruise ship chartered for various events. He also has interests in Connoisseur Traveler and Blue Ridge Wine Way, and rents out his home on Airbnb, all of which appear to earn him contributions to his fortune.
Privately, Salahi married Michaele Holt in 2003, but they divorced in 2012 after Michaele became involved with Journey guitarist Neal Schon. He has been married to Lisa Spolden since 2016.
However, Salahi has been involved in philanthropy, including several fundraisers and organizations, but his charity work has drawn controversy due to allegedly dubious financial arrangements.

Tareq Salahi
American winemaker, White House intruder and former civil servant
Tareq Dirgham Salahi is an American winemaker, winery owner, travel/tourism expert and television personality. Salahi has appeared on two reality TV shows: Where the Elite Meet[1] and NBC Universal/Bravo’s The Real Housewives of D.C. In November 2009, he became known for attending a state dinner at the White House as an uninvited guest. [3]
Early life and education[edit]
Salahi’s father, Dirgham Salahi, emigrated to the United States in the 1940s from Jerusalem, then in British-administered Mandate Palestine. His mother Corinne is from Belgium. Dirgham trained as a petroleum geologist and has worked in the Middle East and the United States. He retired and settled in Virginia, where he became the owner of a farm that he later turned into one of the first Virginia Farm Wineries. Corinne Salahi is the founder and principal of the Montessori School of Alexandria, Virginia.[4][5]
Salahi attended Ascension Academy elementary school in Alexandria and Randolph-Macon Academy high school in Front Royal, Virginia, where he graduated in 1987. In 1994 he graduated from the University of California, Davis with a bachelor’s degree in oenology and business administration. [6]
Career [edit]
Oasis Winery[ edit ]
In 1977, Salahi’s father Dirgham planted Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot vines at the Oasis Vineyard, establishing the fifth winery in Virginia.[7] Dirgham grew the business to a 15,000-cases-a-year business and in a few years had annual sales of up to $1 million, according to court records. The winery’s Meritage line won gold medals at the 1994 and 1996 World Wine Championships. In 1998, Oasis launched a Cuvee “Celebration” sparkling wine, which also received top awards.[5][7][8][9] Dirgham’s 1999 champagne was named in the “Top 10 Best Champagnes and Sparkling Wines in the World” by Wine Enthusiast magazine.[10]
Salahi also began operating a new company on the same site as his father’s Oasis Vineyard called Oasis Enterprises, according to court records. Oasis Enterprises comprised a wine tourism operation, wine country tours and an events and catering company. A dispute arose between Salahi and his family over business matters between Oasis Vineyard and Oasis Enterprises. A lawsuit was filed in which the Salahi family’s ailing mother alleged, according to court documents, that assets from the winery were misallocated to Oasis Enterprises to support tourism initiatives.[5][11] Salahi denied the allegations and made counter-allegations against his parents and their lawyer. He began seeking investors to buy the property from his parents, but no deal was ever reached. The winery temporarily suspended operations and the lawsuit was dropped without resolution.[11]
Oasis Vineyard filed for bankruptcy protection in 2008[12] whose vineyards were auctioned off in late 2011.[13] Oasis Enterprises filed for bankruptcy in 2009.[12][14] Dirgham Salahi died on October 6, 2010 and Tareq issued a statement which read: “In the last few days we have come together as a family.”[15]
In mid-2011, Salahi’s wife, Michaele Salahi, was sued by two separate parties for fraudulently accepting payment for wine tours that were never delivered.[16] On April 23, 2012, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II filed a lawsuit against Salahi’s wife, Michaele, for violating the Virginia Consumer Protection Act by not operating purchased tours and not providing refunds for canceled tours and companies other than official partners who had a relationship with their business.[17] Shortly thereafter, Tareq announced that he would be running against Cucinelli in the 2013 Virginia gubernatorial election.[18]
In May 2013, the land and buildings of the former Oasis Winery were auctioned for US$1.1 million to satisfy creditors, marking the end of the Salahi family’s interest in Oasis Winery. Salahi’s mother, Corinne, was the sole beneficial owner of the property at the time of the sale.[19]
In May 2016, the website vinoshipper.com began selling two wines labeled “The Real Housewinos,” a reference to Salahi’s appearance in The Real Housewives of D.C.[20]
Public service[edit]
Salahi sat on the board of directors of the American Task Force.[21] an organization that worked closely with the heads of state of the United States, Jordan, Israel and Palestine and was committed to the peaceful two-state solution between Israel and Palestine (see: United Nations Security Council Resolution 242).
In 2002, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society named him National Man of the Year for raising $120,000 for the charity.
Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore appointed Salahi to the Virginia Wine Board in 2000 for a three-year term.[23] At the end of that term, Virginia Gov. Mark Warner appointed Salahi to chair the Virginia Wine Tourism Office. Salahi was one of 15 directors of the Virginia Tourism Corporation,[24] a “board that shapes Virginia’s tourism policy” appointed by Gov. Tim Kaine in 2006. Kaine told MSNBC:
Tareq served on the state wine committee under both Governor Gilmore and Governor Warner, and when his tenure on the wine committee ended, he and the tourist board wanted him on the committee because he’s a great promoter — you won’t be surprised at that to hear say.
During his tenure, the Virginia Wineway, the Loudoun Wine Trail, the Blue Ridge Wineway, and the Virginia Wineries Alliance were formed, attracting 980,000 wine tourists to the state, 336,000 of whom visited wineries in Piedmont, according to a USDA study.[8][25] ][26][27]
After the 2009 White House security incident, Virginia Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment wrote a letter to Gov. Kaine asking for Salahi’s removal from the board: “Mr. not the face we want for tourism in Virginia need … I would appreciate it if you would act quickly to avoid further negative situations.
polo [edit]
Salahi started polo at the age of 16. He was a regular competitor on the US National Team and his Oasis team won two US Polo Association National Arena titles in 1997 and 1998.[9]
In 2006, Salahi was involved in sponsoring the Courage Cup, a polo charity event to raise funds for urban youth to experience equestrian activities. That year he captained the United States Polo Team against Charles, Prince of Wales.[31] A dispute over control, vendor pay and use of Courage Cup proceeds reportedly led to the Salahis forming the America’s Polo Cup in 2007. Allegations of misuse of proceeds from the new charity event arose,[35][36] and in December 2009 the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumers opened an investigation into the annual event.[37][38]
The 2010 America’s Polo Cup game was held on June 12 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. held, with teams announced as United States and India. The advertised ticket price for the event was $95 per person. The event was attended by approximately 250 people, with food from Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen and PF Chang’s China Bistro. According to reports from the event, the players representing India were actually of Pakistani descent, hailing from Florida. A spokesman for the Indian embassy stated that neither the embassy nor the Indian government had any connection to the event.[39][40][41] The event’s website and the US team’s uniforms identified an Indian company, Kingfisher Beer, as a sponsor. A Kingfisher spokesman denied that the company sponsored the event.[39] Yashpal Singh, President and CEO of Mendocino Brewing Company, Kingfisher’s parent company, stated:
We do not sponsor this event and have informed the people running this event. … We have sent appropriate legal notices and he continues to apply to sponsor us. I don’t know what world he lives in.[39]
The America’s Polo Cup filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October 2010.
Teams Salahi was a part of won the 2020 National Arena Championship Chairman’s Cup and USPA National Challenge Cup. A team, captained by Salahi, won one of the most famous polo matches in the world at the Bentley & Stella Artois World Championships in November of that year.[44]
2009 US State Dinner Security Breaches[edit]
In November 2009, Tareq and Michaele Salahi infiltrated a state dinner despite not being invited.[2][45][46] Michaele Salahi is a member of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of D.C., and the show filmed her preparations for dinner and followed the couple into the White House. Tim Burke, directing MTV Blaggers! in which a group of friends crashed high-profile events and parties, lied and said he had been contacted by Salahi a week before the White House incident. He claimed Salahi asked his advice on how to sneak into a black tie event.[50]
After the event, Salahi was asked by the US House Homeland Security Committee to appear at a hearing on December 3, 2009, but he declined to attend.[51] On December 9, 2009, the Committee on Homeland Security voted 26-3 to subpoena Salahi and 27-2 to subpoena his wife, Michaele, to a security breach hearing scheduled for January 20, 2010. The Salahis invoked the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution at the hearing.[52][53] Salahi attorney Stephen Best described the congressional inquiry as “not an information-seeking hearing. This was an opportunity for a public flogging.”[54]
Journey for the Cure Foundation[edit]
In 2009, Salahi’s then-wife Michaele was listed as the director of the Journey for the Cure Foundation, which is affiliated with the rock band Journey. The Consumer Affairs Office of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumers issued a press release advising consumers that “Journey for the Cure Foundation, 14141 Hume Road, Hume, Virginia was soliciting donations from Virginia citizens for an alleged charitable cause dated May 13, 2009, that organization had not registered with the Commissioner or been granted exempt status as required by law.”[55][56]
On February 28, 2012, the Virginia Attorney General’s office announced a settlement with Salahi under which he would pay a fine for the violations. According to the Attorney General:
Journey for the Cure claimed on its web site that “100% of our funding goes directly to finding the cure and we have no paid staff.” Based on bank records obtained through the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs (OCA) investigation, the Attorney General claimed that only 33% of JCF’s spending in 2007 and 0.6% of spending in 2008 was directly related to charities went to disease prevention. Instead, significant amounts were spent on sourcing overheads
The attorney general’s office also alleged that the charity filed an inaccurate financial report with state regulators and made inquiries in Virginia from 2004 to 2009 without obtaining proper registration. It also failed to maintain proper tax records and provide the state with required financial information when it stopped soliciting contributions there in 2010.
Salahi’s then-wife was accused of personally violating the Contribution Collection Act by signing a notice stating the foundation was registered with the Consumer Agency when it was not, and signing a registration statement making false claims about the financial information of the Foundation established and history.[57]
In the settlement agreement, Salahi agreed to pay Virginia $2,500 in civil penalties and $7,500 in legal fees on behalf of his wife, and Journey for the Cure will pay $25,000 in civil penalties.
Reality TV appearances [ edit ]
Salahi has appeared on two reality TV shows (see below) and documentaries have been made about the White House security incident.[59]
In 2009, Saturday Night Live played a parody of the White House security incident.
The Salahis appeared on the 2010 reality television show The Real Housewives of D.C. on. The couple clashed with other main cast members, and the conflicts continued after the show aired. The production was unflattering to the Salahis and included detailed coverage of the collapse of the White House gate. Critics have noted that the show’s producers edited the material in a way that exaggerated the truth.[65]
In 2014, Salahi lost a celebrity boxing match to Jose Canseco in a DirecTV pay-per-view special.
Virginia gubernatorial election 2013 [ edit ]
On April 25, 2012, Salahi announced his candidacy as a Republican for governor of Virginia in the 2013 Virginia gubernatorial election. In making his announcement, Salahi stated that his candidacy would avenge a lawsuit recently filed against him by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II, who hoped to become the Republican gubernatorial nominee. He added that the lawsuit made him realize how much taxpayer money politicians were wasting.[18] On December 4, 2012, Salahi announced the creation of the website Crashthevote.com to promote his candidacy.[67] The website stated that its platform included: promoting the Commonwealth of Virginia; advancement of the military, both our troops and our defense workers; increase in jobs; pro business; pro-tourism; pro-agriculture; Less taxes; Kill the road tax; Pro green energy production.[68]
On January 14, 2013, Salahi announced that he would run for governor of Virginia as an independent.[69] He said he was informed that his December refusal to sign a statement of support for all Republican candidates in 2013[70] could bar him from the Republican nomination process. He declared that he “couldn’t agree with anything that Cuccinelli believes in”.[69]
Salahi failed to submit the required signatures to the Virginia State Board of Elections by the June 11, 2013 deadline and did not appear on the ballot as an independent. He turned his run into a write-in campaign and said he would seek a seat in Congress if he didn’t win the governorship. Salahi was also set to have his campaign filmed by Campbell Media Group, but the production company faced legal charges for targeting and cheating on its film themes.
Salahi was one of two declared candidates for governor, along with John Parmele Jr., a Navy retiree.[74] All entered candidates received 11,087 votes, 0.49% of the total votes cast.[75]
2014 congressional election[edit]
In December 2013, Salahi announced that he was running in the 2014 Republican primary for Virginia’s 10th congressional district to succeed Frank Wolf, the retired Republican incumbent.[76] However, he withdrew from the 10th Republican primary and joined the Independent Greens in March 2014 to run for Virginia’s 7th congressional district seat, currently held by Eric Cantor. Salahi tried to collect 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot.[78] In June 2014, Salahi submitted 2,051 signatures to the Virginia State Board of Elections,[79] but only 480 of them were valid and he did not appear on the ballot.[79]
Other business interests[ edit ]
Salahi rents out his house on Airbnb. In February 2014, Salahi had to obtain a permit for this.[80]
As of 2015, Salahi writes a Virginia-based blog, Connoisseur Traveler.[81]
In November 2015, Salahi announced his engagement to the Northern Virginia socialite and his business partner Lisa Spoden, who also serves as CEO of their Hotels at Sea joint venture (Salahi serves as chairman), [82] [83] which plans to become a operate an intermediary between companies wishing to charter cruise ships and the cruise lines themselves.
Personal life[edit]
Salahi met Michaele Holt in 2000 at a baby shower hosted by real estate agent N. Casey Margenau and his wife Molly in McLean, Virginia.[5][8][84][85] They married at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C. in 2003 with a 30-minute fireworks display and an eight-foot wedding cake. The guest list included 1,836 guests, including Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and former US Ambassador to Ireland Margaret Heckler, as well as numerous high-profile guests from the US Department of State, CIA, US Senate, US Congress and other high-profile diplomatic guests . The wedding was repeatedly postponed, leading US Supreme Court Justice Kennedy to joke that he had to issue “subpoenas” to the bride and groom.[3][5][8][86]
Salahi garnered national attention in 2009 after crashing a state dinner at the White House alongside his ex-wife Michaele Salahi. The bizarre incident was believed to be a media stunt to promote The Real Housewives of D.C., which starred the Salahis.
On September 13, 2011, Salahi reported Michaele missing and possibly kidnapped after Michaele called him to say she was on her way to her mother’s house, but her mother said she had not arrived.[87] She was located soon after, when law enforcement discovered she had eloped with Neal Schon, guitarist for the rock band Journey, and didn’t want Salahi to know where she was.[87] Michaele had met him earlier and remained close friends with him.[87]
On September 16, 2011, Salahi filed for divorce from Michaele on grounds of adultery and abandonment or separation.[88]
Salahi refiled the case shortly thereafter with amendments, but Michaele also filed for divorce on December 15, 2011, citing threats and violence against her, cruelty and constructive desertion.[89] On December 22, 2011, Salahi responded to Michaele’s filing for divorce by filing again for divorce on charges of adultery, desertion and desertion.[89]
On August 20, 2012, Judge Dennis L. Hupp granted the Salahis a final judgment in divorce after a contentious settlement.[90] Hupp also filed a sealed warrant for a $50 million personal injury lawsuit that Salahi had filed against entertainment company Journey, Schon and Nomata. Hupp sealed the comparison and the divorce decree.
On January 1, 2016, Salahi married his business partner Lisa Spoden.[82]
