Todd Bodine’s wife, Janet, has a story worth telling

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – We often get caught up in the tabloids that happen off the track in NASCAR, most of them for some controversy or what could be considered juicy.

Kurt Busch recently announced that he and his wife Eva are divorcing while declaring his new girlfriend in Victory Lane at Infineon Raceway. Paige Duke was recently fired as Miss Sprint Cup, apparently because inappropriate photos taken during her college days surfaced on the internet.

And then there was Saturday night’s traffic debacle at the Kentucky Speedway, sending many into a boulevard-like eating frenzy.

Well, here’s an off-the-track story that’s neither controversial nor juicy, but a story worth telling.

It’s a story about Janet Bodine, known most weekends as the wife of Todd Bodine, a two-time truck series champion nicknamed “The Onion” because of his baldness.

It is the story of a good Samaritan.

We don’t hear enough about the good deeds people do, but last Saturday, while driving on Interstate 77 near Mooresville, NC, Janet witnessed an accident that ultimately resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman.

Janet was traveling south and the pickup truck involved in the accident was traveling north when it reportedly swerved, hit a guard rail and overturned. Janet could easily have carried on as others, especially as they were going in the opposite direction and separated by a median.

She didn’t. She turned and arrived at the scene in time to find that both girls were badly injured and that the pickup truck was leaking fuel that could ignite at any moment.

She wasn’t worried about the danger she might put her life in. A paramedic by training, she quickly organized a plan, had a friend call 911 with her and asked for two helicopters or ambulances, a fire engine, and the police. She assessed the severity of the injuries and told other untrained people what to do to keep one of the passengers stable while she tended to the more seriously injured passenger, who died at the scene.

She did what many wouldn’t do for fear of lawsuits or risking her own life and got involved.

“Sometimes I think people are afraid to quit,” Janet said. “Sometimes people… maybe they don’t find something so bad. Maybe sometimes people don’t want to get involved because they’re afraid of legal action.

“But there were a lot of people who quit. There were many who felt helpless.”

Not all did. There was a man posing as a paramedic who interfered. There was a nurse doing what she could. There was another man who used the shirt off his back to help staunch the bleeding of one of the passengers.

But Janet gets most of the headlines, partly because she’s the wife of a NASCAR driver and partly because she was willing to step forward to share how she saw the accident.

“Yeah, that’s one of the things I struggle with,” Janet said. “If I wasn’t married to Todd or people didn’t know who I am, would it get all this attention? Everyone else who stopped at this scene helped. They must also be credited.

“But when I introduced myself as Janet Bodine, the question was automatically, ‘Oh, are you Todd’s wife?’ instead of ‘Oh, are you a paramedic and can help?'”

Janet is also struggling with the attention her account of the accident has garnered. From their perspective, a tractor-trailer pulled into the pickup’s lane, forcing the pickup to swerve. Another witness, driving behind the pickup, said the truck pulled into the tractor trailer’s lane, sparking the incident.

“I can only say what I saw,” said Janet.

That is not important. Importantly, Janet stopped, used the training she developed in Pennsylvania when she was 15, and did what she could to help save at least one life.

“Whether you’re a NASCAR driver’s wife or a football player’s wife, we all lose our identity because we’re there for our husbands,” Janet said. “But we all have different passions elsewhere.”

Janet gave up her passion for working as a paramedic to be at the track with Todd. She wants to be there to take care of him or one of her close friends if there is an accident on the track.

“Because of our [race] schedule, it’s almost impossible for me to do what I really love,” said Janet.

Driven by her passion, Janet feels an uncontrollable urge to stop whenever she sees someone in distress on the side of the road. That’s why she quit last Saturday when others continued despite the risks.

“When you work in this business, you really don’t see it as putting your own life on the line,” Janet said. “You almost don’t even think about your own life. You worry about the risk of others.

It’s a story worth telling. It’s a Good Samaritan story.

It’s a reminder that not every off-the-track story in NASCAR needs to be made for a tabloid.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to remove the names of the victims of the car accident.
