Vann Nath dies at 66; Cambodian painter survived torture in prison

Vann Nath, whose talent as an artist helped him survive Cambodia’s most notorious prison during the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror in the 1970s and whose later paintings testified to the prison’s many horrors, has died. He was 66.

Vann Nath, who has suffered from chronic kidney disease in recent years that required regular dialysis treatment and was hospitalized with a hemorrhagic ulcer in 2010, died in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Monday after his daughter Vann Chan Semin fell into a coma in late August was , the Associated Press said on Monday.

In an interview with the Associated Press in August, Vann Nath’s wife, Kith Eng, blamed his illnesses on the torture he experienced during his year as a Khmer Rouge prisoner.

Vann Nath was one of only seven prisoners to survive Tuol Sleng Prison, a converted high school also known as “S-21” that nearby factory workers called “the place where people go in and never come out”.

At least 14,000 Cambodian men, women and children were reportedly taken to the prison where they were interrogated, tortured and executed from 1975 to 1979.

With Vann Nath’s death, only two of the seven surviving former prisoners remain.

Born into a farming family in Battambang, he spent a number of years as a monk before taking an apprenticeship as an artist. Before the Khmer Rouge seized power in 1975 and he was forced to work in the rice fields, he ran a small business painting movie posters, billboards and portraits.

Vann Nath never learned why he was arrested in January 1978.

“They arrested almost everyone in my village,” he said with a shrug in a 1997 interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Like the dozens of other prisoners who shared his prison cell, he had his ankles tied to the concrete floor and was only given a few spoonfuls of rice each day. They were so hungry, he once recalled, that they ate insects that fell from the ceiling.

But his life in prison changed when guards entered the cell and asked for “the painter.”

After being carried into an office, he was shown a picture of Pol Pot and asked if he could paint the Khmer Rouge leader’s portrait.

“I wasn’t sure what to say,” he recalled in an interview with the Times. “I said, ‘Right now I can’t even get up.'”

With enough food to keep his energy up, Vann Nath began painting head-and-shoulders portraits of Pol Pot every day. He recalled painting “the same portrait over and over” from sunrise to midnight, his quiet work interrupted by the screams of the tortured prisoners.

“I hated him when I painted him,” he recalled. “I wish I could kill him.”

Vann Nath was in prison for almost a year when Vietnamese troops invaded Cambodia in late December 1978 and the Khmer Rouge were soon ousted from power.

As reported in a Times article, Cambodian guards took the prisoners away to kill them, but they encountered Vietnamese soldiers. During the battle, Vann Nath and six other prisoners managed to escape.

The Khmer Rouge death toll was estimated by the US State Department-funded Yale Cambodian Genocide Project to be between 1.2 and 1.7 million.

Two of Vann Nath’s sons died while he was imprisoned. After reuniting with his wife, he reportedly had three more children. He also gained respect as a painter.

Tuol Sleng Prison was converted into the Tuol Sleng Memorial and Genocide Museum, which opened in 1980 and contains Vann Nath’s paintings depicting the atrocities he saw or described in prison, including water torture and electric shock treatment.

There is also a self-portrait of an emaciated Vann Nath during his captivity. “I was just a body then,” he said in an interview in 1997. “My spirit was gone.”

At the time of the interview, he was quietly living in the large house he owned in Phnom Penh, where he also owned a restaurant which housed a gallery of his work.

He chronicled his story in the 1998 book A Cambodian Prison Portrait: One Year in the Khmer Rouge’s S-21 and featured prominently in the 2003 documentary S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine.

Vann Nath testified before a UN-backed war crimes tribunal in Phnom Penh in 2009, which tried the prison’s chief, Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch. In July 2010, Duch was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

The Duprees

The Original Duprees c.1962 (L to R), John Salvato, Michael Arnone, Joey Canzano, Joseph Santolo and Thomas Bialoglow.

The Duprees are an American doo-wop-style musical group who had a string of top ten singles in the early 1960s. Their highest-charting single, “You Belong to Me,” reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962. In 1970, they recorded as The Italian Asphalt & Pavement Company (also credited as I.A.P.CO.) with moderate commercial success.

history [edit]

Foundation [edit]

The group was formed in Jersey City, New Jersey in the early 1960s by [William L. Dickinson High School] students Michael Arnone, Joe Santollo, John Salvato, Tom Bialoglow and singer Joey Canzano (later known as Joey Vann) founded.

Originally, Tom Bialoglow and Joey ‘Vann’ Canzano sang with a local Jersey City group, The Utopians, while Arnone, Santollo and Salvato played with another local group, The Elgins. One night when the Utopians were singing in Hamilton Park, Arnone, Santollo and Salvato came to hear Joey Vann. The Elgins had just broken up and wanted Vann to take the lead in a new group they were forming, The Parisians. Vann accepted on condition that Bialoglow came with him. While practicing in a men’s restroom in a Jersey City park, police officer Mike Pelosa walked in and sent the boys running. He called them back and explained that he had been listening to them for several weeks and asked if they would like to sing at Bergen Avenue CYO. This was the first appearance of the Duprees, then known as The Parisians.[1]

Early in their run, Joey Vann got into an argument with Joe Santollo which resulted in him leaving the group. Without a lead, the group decided to hire a black lead singer, who sent them on a quest through Jersey City’s black neighborhood of Monticello Avenue. They asked a man on a street corner where they could find singers, and he directed them to a local barber shop. As they drove away, Santollo asked him his name, to which he replied, “Dupree.” Santollo liked it as a group name, but they stayed as The Parisians until signing to Co-Ed in 1962.

While looking for lead singers they met a local barber who they hired, he was impressed with them but already had a group and was a bit too old for The Parisians. However, he introduced them to “My Own True Love” from the Gone With the Wind soundtrack, which they were surprised had words. He also told them to look for Michael Kelly, who had sung lead for another local group, The Vocal Teens. They invited Kelly to a rehearsal and loved his vocal ability and feel. So did her manager, who took her to Bell Sound, where they recorded a demo of “My Own True Love” and a Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers song, “It’s Christmas Once Again.”

Career at Coed Records [ edit ]

After recording their demo, The Parisians searched for a record label to get their attention. They started dropping the demo off at various labels in New York City, most of whom threw it away. One of the labels they demoed to was Coed Records. The group forgot to leave a phone number and waited two months for a reply before finally returning to check in. As it turned out, Coed had liked her sound and wanted her to audition but had no way of contacting her. While waiting, Michael Kelly was discovered by the songwriting team Hal and Muriel Weiss, who also wrote for Ronnie and the Hi-Lites. He left The Parisians and recorded an underperforming single “When A Man Cries” in August 1962. Despite being the lead singer on their demo, they decided not to inform the label and instead called Joey Vann to see if he would return. He did, and they auditioned at the office of Coed founder George Paxton, who liked them and offered them a six-month contract with two one-year options, not realizing it wasn’t Joey Vann on the demo.

The group enjoyed re-arranging old, lesser-known standards in their style, much like The Flamingos did with I Only Have Eyes For You. Paxton, a former bandleader, loved this and particularly loved her ability to arrange her own songs. Paxton didn’t like her name, The Parisians, though, so he had her write down 15 names and choose one from them. Tom Bialoglow made the list and added the name The Duprees in memory of the man on the corner a while back. In the spring of 1962, with the help of Paxton and A&R man/arranger Fred Weismantel, they created the sound of The Duprees using big band style arrangements with their doo-wop vocal sound. In August 1962 they released their first album entitled You Belong To Me. The title track became the group’s biggest hit, spending 10 weeks in the weekly Billboard Top 40 chart and two weeks weekly in the top 10, peaking at #7. Her recording of “My Own True Love” would also chart at number 13 on the weekly Top 40 chart.

After their initial release, The Duprees rose to stardom and toured the United States, performing at venues such as the Apollo Theater and for radio disc jockeys. They also toured with Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars.

In 1963 they released an album Have You Heard? and three chart singles, “Gone With the Wind” peaked at #89, “Have You Heard?” at #18, and “Why Don’t You Believe Me” at #37.

Shortly before the release of “Have You Heard?” Tom Bialoglow left the group after overwhelming royalties left him choosing between family and group. After leaving the group, Bialoglow was not replaced and the album was produced and released without him.

Career at Columbia and Heritage[edit]

In 1964, like many other groups, The Duprees were injured by the British invasion. Joey Vann left the group sometime after “Have You Heard?” and was once again replaced by Mike Kelly.

In 1965, The Duprees had their last charting single with a Columbia Records release entitled “Around The Corner”, which peaked at #93 on the weekly Top 40 chart.

The Duprees, with Phil Granito in 1987, Jimmy Spinelli in 1991 and Tommy Petillo returning as lead singer in 2002, continue today.

Today Phil Granito, Jimmy Spinelli and Tom Petillo look forward to continuing the legacy and will be performing in 2021.

Today’s Duprees have over 40 years of stage performances with Phil Granito, Tommy Petillo and Jimmy Spinelli continuing to perform all the chart-topping songs you know and love.

history [edit]

In the late 1960s, The Duprees went out of fashion after the Beatles led the British invasion of the 1960s, and while they continued to record they veered in a more ‘pop’ direction, releasing an album called ‘The Italian Asphalt & Pavement Company” and charted with lead singer Mike Kelly with a song that reached No. 97 “Check Yourself”. They tried again with a great performance by Mike Kelly on “The Sky’s The Limit”.

In 1978, lead singer Mike Kelly left the Duprees and was replaced as lead singer by Tommy Petillo. John Salvato only sang at the big shows and was replaced by Larry Casanova. The last live performance by original group members John Salvato, Mike Arnone and Joe Santollo, with Larry Casanova vocals and Tommy Petillo on lead, was New Year’s Eve 1979.

In 1987-88 the Duprees consisted of Mike Arnone, Phil Granito, Tom Bialoglow and Richie Rosato. By 1991, Duprees members were Richie Rosato, Phil Granito, Jimmy Spinelli, and Tony Testa.

Richie Rosato (1980–2001) was replaced as lead singer by Tommy Petillo (since 2002), who performed with Phil Granito (since 1987) and Jimmy Spinelli (since 1991).

Today’s Duprees have over 40 years of stage performances with Phil Granito, Jimmy Spinelli and Tommy Petillo continuing to perform all the chart-topping songs you know and love.

Joe Santollo died in 1981, Joey Vann died in 1984, and Mike Arnone died in 2005. Mike Kelly died on August 7, 2012… Tommy Bialoglow left the group in the early 1960s.

The Original Duprees (Joey Vann Canzano, Mike Kelly, John Salvato, Tom Bialoglow, Joe Santollo and Mike Arnone) were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2006.
