Akindele-Bello born Olufunke Ayotunde (24 August 1977)[2][3] popularly known as Funke Akindele or Jenifa[4] is a Nigerian film actress[5] and producer.[6] Akindele starred in the sitcom I Need to Know from 1998 to 2002 and won the 2009 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress.[7] She became famous for her role in the film titled Jenifa[8] which earned her the nickname Jenifa. The Omo Ghetto[9] trilogy contributed to her fame. Funke Akindele starred in the show Jenifas Diary,[10] for which she won Best Actress in a Comedy at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.[11]
Early life and education[edit]
Akindele was born on August 24, 1977 in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria.[12] She is the second of three children (two girls and one boy). Her mother is a doctor while her father is a retired school principal.[4][13] She attended Grace Children School Gbagada in Lagos State. She earned an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communications from the former Ogun State Polytechnic, now known as Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. She earned a law degree from the University of Lagos.[14]

Akindele came into the limelight after starring in the popular United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) sponsored sitcom I Need to Know, which ran from 1998-2002. Funke Akindele played Bisi, a curious but highly intelligent high school student. Funke Akindele’s big break came in 2008 when she appeared in the film Jenifa.[15][16]
In January 2018, controversy arose when it was reported that Funke Akindele would be making her Hollywood debut in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War as she was listed as a cast member on IMDb.[17] Mainstream Nigerian press, citing IMDb, reported that Jenifa was set to star in Infinity War as guard Dora Milaje.[18] A few weeks later, her name was replaced by Nigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji,[19] and Funke Akindele’s upload was revealed to be a hack.[20] In February 2018, it was reported that Senate President and Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Bukola Saraki advised Marvel Studios to show Akindele in Infinity War.[21]
In a July 2016 interview, Funke Akindele explained that she was less active in the Yoruba film industry at the time due to piracy.[11] Akindele stars as the main character in the ongoing hit TV show Jenifa’s Diary alongside Fisayo Ajisola, Falz, Juliana Olayode and Aderounmu Adejumoke. The show is a spin-off of the film Jenifa.[10] The 2018 comedy Moms at War stars Funke Akindele and Omoni Oboli. In July 2019, Akindele launched a new web series, Aiyetoro Town,[22] a spin-off of her popular TV series Jenifa’s Diary.[23] She is CEO of Scene One Film Productions.[24]
She made her directorial debut in 2019 in the political drama “Your Excellency”.[25]
