Trina Braxton

American singer

musical artist

Trina Evette Braxton-Scale (born December 3, 1974) is an American singer and reality television personality. She is the younger sister of R&B singing icon Toni Braxton. Trina’s first major musical breakthrough came in 1992 as a founding member of the R&B group The Braxtons, which she formed with her sisters. After losing two members, The Braxtons released their only album, So Many Ways, as a trio in 1996 along with four singles: “So Many Ways”, “Only Love”, “The Boss” and “Slow Flow”.

In 2011, Braxton reunited with her sisters for the We TV reality show Braxton Family Values. The first season was the #1-rated reality show on WE TV, and the network ordered a 13-episode second season of the show after the third episode.[2][3] Trina released her first solo single called “Party or Go Home” in March 2012.[4] Since September 2018, Braxton has co-hosted the talk show “Sister Circle” for TV One and TEGNA from 12:00 p.m. – 1 p.m., along with Quad Webb-Lunceford, Syleena Johnson and Rashan Ali.[5][6][7][8]

Braxton has acted in several films and has started a number of hair and bar companies.[9][10][11]

Early life[edit]

She was born in Severn, Maryland. [Citation needed] Her father, Michael Conrad Braxton Sr., was a Methodist[12][13] minister and utility worker, and her mother, Evelyn Jackson, was a South Carolina native a former opera singer and cosmetologist, as well as a pastor. [14][15] Braxton’s maternal grandfather was also a pastor.[16] Braxton has an older brother named Michael, Jr. (born 1968) and four sisters named Toni (born 1967), Towanda (born 1973), Traci (1971–2022), and Tamar (born 1977). Braxton and her siblings grew up in a strictly religious household, and Braxton’s first performing experience was singing in her church choir.

Career [edit]

1990–1997: Career Beginnings and The Braxtons [ edit ]

Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar Braxton signed their first record deal with Arista Records in 1989. In 1990 they released their first single “Good Life”. It would be their only single for five. “Good Life” was not a hit, peaking at #79 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. At the time of the single’s release, the members’ age differences created a problem with marketing. Subsequently, The Braxtons were dropped from Arista Records.

1991, during a showcase with Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, who were in the process of founding LaFace Records, Toni Braxton, minus her four sisters, was selected and signed as the label’s first female solo artist. At the time, the remaining members were told that LaFace was not looking for another girl group as she had just signed TLC.

After Toni’s departure from the group in 1991, the remaining Braxtons members became backup singers for Toni’s first US tour, music videos, and promotional appearances. Traci, Towanda, Trina and Tamar were featured in the music video for Toni Braxton’s third single “Seven Whole Days” from her self-titled debut album.

In 1993, Bryant Reid, vice president of LaFace Records A&R, signed The Braxtons to LaFace. However, the group never released an album or single for the record label. When Reid joined Atlantic Records, he convinced LaFace executives to allow him to take the group to Atlantic as well. It was reported in Vibe magazine that Traci Braxton had left the group in 1995 to pursue a career as a youth counselor.[21] However, it was only confirmed in a 2011 promotional appearance on The Mo’Nique Show that Traci was barred from signing with Atlantic because she was pregnant at the time.

In June 1996, Tamar, Trina and Towanda returned with a new album entitled So Many Ways, which shared the same title as the lead single. Released on August 13, 1996, the album peaked at number 26 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[23] It became their first and only LP. Atlantic Records A&R Vice President Bryant Reid served as executive producer on the album. At the time of publication, Reid told Billboard Magazine, “I had a vision for her back then that was about young sophistication with sex appeal.” So Many Ways included productions from Jermaine Dupri and Daryl Simmons along with Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and Sean “Sep” Hall. The album also included a cover of Diana Ross’ hit “The Boss” and Klymaxx’s song “I’d Still Say Yes”.[20] The Braxtons released a music video to promote “So Many Ways.” It was directed by Cameron Casey and starred aspiring actor Mekhi Phifer. The trio also performed a remixed version of “So Many Ways” with rapper Jay-Z on September 9, 1996 at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. The single was also used as the opening track on the soundtrack to the comedy film High School High. “So Many Ways” peaked at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996, number 22 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 32 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1997.[27]

The album’s second single, “Only Love,” was released on January 25, 1997 and peaked at number 52 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. A music video for this song was also released.[23] A Masters At Work remixed version of The Braxtons’ cover of “The Boss” reached #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart in early 1997.[28] Slow Flow was the last single released from So Many Ways. It peaked at number 26 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1997, becoming her highest charting single in the UK. The Braxtons also acted as opening act for Toni Braxton on the European leg of their Secrets tour in 1997. The Braxtons decided to split up as a group after lead singer Tamar Braxton left in 1998 to pursue a solo career with DreamWorks Records ] However, the members continued to sing and play in various other projects.

They say “Third Times A Charm” and in the case of Trina Braxton, it’s proving true with her new husband, Von Scales. Braxton and Scales wed in December 2019 in a ceremony in St. Louis. The relationship between Trina Braxton and Von Scales

Braxton and Scales met on a blind double date arranged by mutual friends. Both had recently ended bad relationships and after hitting it off over dinner and a movie with their friends, they decided to go back on their own and have been together ever since.

Much of their relationship was long-distance, with Scales traveling from his home in St. Louis to visit Braxton. The show chronicled Scales meeting Braxton’s family, who took an immediate liking to them. He asked both her parents and her two sons for Braxton’s hand in marriage.

After a year and a half of dating, Scales proposed during a family couple’s trip to the Napa Valley, with her sisters surrounding her with their seal of approval — except for her little sister Tamar, who was upset that Scales was proposing during a trip she said was in honor of her birthday. Tamar eventually apologized to her sister for her behavior.

Trina Braxton reveals exclusive details about her wedding day

Braxton and Scales were married on Sunday, December 15 in Scales’ hometown of St. Louis in Windows on Washington. She sat down for an exclusive interview with Rolling Out to share the details of her day.

Braxton donned a beautiful bespoke gown that featured crystals, a semi-sweetheart neckline with straps and lace. The dress took a lot of work as the designers are based in Israel and required multiple alterations, requiring Braxton and her team to transport the dress back and forth until it was just right.

Known as the cheap sister of the Braxton clan, she revealed she struck gold with her headdress. She ordered the accessory online from Amazon for a whopping $8.99 and admitted she was a little nervous that it was too good to be true.

“When I saw it I was like, ‘That can’t possibly be that cute about me,’ but the next day when it came I was like, ‘That’s cute,'” she exclaimed, before joking, “I’m a Bargain Betty darling.”

Braxton stuck to the traditional theme of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue — and revealed that her sisters and mom all added something extra to their special day for their overall look. Her mother provided her with her jewelry, which made the “something new” aspect. The shoes she wore were designed by her older sister Traci, who is currently working on a shoe line.

For the reception, Braxton donned a white off-the-shoulder top with matching trousers, while Scales wore a gray suit. Her hair and makeup were done by well known artists from the Atlanta area where she lives. Going for a natural look, she rocked a natural, simple ponytail to highlight her headpiece.

All of her immediate family were present at the wedding, including her father, Michael Braxton, who skipped her second wedding to her late ex-husband, Gabe Solis.

The couple’s wedding was celebrated by former divorce court judge Mablean Ephriam, who conducted her premarital counseling and even wrote bespoke vows for her based on her sessions.

Throughout the interview, Braxton gushed about Scales, calling his marriage “easy.” They spent eight days honeymooning in Mexico, departing the day after their wedding. They now live full-time in Atlanta and have reunited their families — both have sons from previous marriages.

Braxton promises the wedding anniversary will air during the upcoming season of Braxton Family Values.
