If you lived in the ’90s, you probably remember The Snapple Lady. Wendy Kaufman sat behind a desk that was too high and faced the camera at eye level. She read and responded to genuine Snapple fan mail in the beverage company’s ads. The TV spots were a huge boon to the company and helped propel Snapple, which was founded in 1972, onto the pop culture map in a big way. Kaufman played the affable mascot in 37 commercials over three years while grappling with some personal struggles that fans were later surprised to hear about.

Kaufman wasn’t an actor, he was a real Snapple employee.
Kaufman joined the Snapple team in the early ’90s. In a blog post for the Kosher Spirit website, Kaufman explained that Snapple co-founder Arnie Greenberg was one of her father’s good friends, so getting a job at the burgeoning beverage company was fairly easy.
But Kaufman wasn’t hired as a spokesperson at the time. According to Eater, she initially worked in shipping and often sorted through the tons of fan letters the brand received.
“Snapple became very popular and we started getting lots of mail from happy customers,” Kaufman wrote on Kosher Spirit. “We were a growing company and people were busy with their jobs. No one wanted to answer the mail, so I started doing it. I not only wrote but called, and consumers were pleased to know that someone was actually reading their mail.”
A marketing firm came up with the idea of making Kaufman the friendly face of the company.
“I wrote Greg Brady – Barry Williams – a fan letter when I was a kid,” Kaufman told Eater of her newfound passion. “When I first started getting the mail at Snapple and thought about writing a fan letter to which I never got a reply, I could sympathize. I cared about people. I wasn’t an actress. I just loved her.”
As reported by the same outlet, Snapple’s marketing firm decided to launch an advertising campaign that focused on Snapple fans and starred Kaufman.
“Our advertising agency’s plan was to make it look like Snapple didn’t have an advertising agency,” said Jon Bond of agency Kirshenbaum Bond + Partners. “It was way ahead of its time. When we suggested Wendy to speak… [Snapple] wanted supermodels. We said, ‘Look, the average woman in America is a size 12.’”
Kaufman was fired as the Snapple mascot when the company was sold to Quaker Oats, but they reinstated her as a “goodwill ambassador” a few years later. She worked for the company until 2008.

Kaufman credits her Snapple job with helping her stay sober.
In a 2016 interview with Oprah Winfrey for her series Oprah: Where Are They Now, Kaufman shared that she battled drug and alcohol use disorders before becoming the company’s mascot. She initially turned to drugs to help her lose weight. After nearly a decade, she sought help.
“I was so sick it really brought me to my knees,” Kaufman told Winfrey. “I said to God on my knees, hysterical and crying, ‘Either kill me or please help me get better. I can’t live like this one second longer.'”
Shortly after she got sober, Kaufman got the Snapple gig and she credits her with being the Snapple Lady who helped her maintain her sobriety.
“The Snapple letter campaign became a crucial key to my recovery. By bringing joy to others, I increased the joy in my own life. I got to a point where I could look in the mirror and like what I saw,” she wrote on Kosher Geist.
“Snapple was much more than a job,” she continued. “It was a lifeline and it was a way for me to stay sober and it was a vehicle for me to do wonderful nice things for other people.”
Today, Kaufman is working towards starting her own clothing company.

Kaufman was born in North Woodmere, New York, to a homemaker father and a father who owned a steel manufacturing company. She grew up in North Woodmere and attended Lawrence High School, graduating from Syracuse University in 1980 with degrees in film and sociology.[1]

At the time of the first ad campaign, Kaufman was working at Snapple’s Long Island headquarters. In her free time, she makes it her mission to answer Snapple fan mail. Snapple’s new advertising agency, Kirshenbaum and Bond, chose Kaufman as “Wendy, the Snapple Lady” and sold their choice to the founders by showing them photographs of Oprah and Roseanne Barr, both burly women who were hugely popular. In the ads, Kaufman was responding to letters from Snapple customers.
