Colorful characters of the Boardwalk

brian shane

DelmarvaNow

The young man is smeared with gold paint: sports jacket, pants, sneakers, hat, sunglasses, not to mention his face and hands. He sits on a golden three-wheeled bicycle and looks at the ocean. A gold bicycle helmet lies in front of him on the boardwalk and serves as a tip container.

It starts out statuesque, a flax-colored still life, and then bursts into motion. He stands upright on his bicycle pedals. He takes his hat and twists it over his chest with his left hand. He catches it with his right hand and slams the hat back on his head in a single movement.

He squeaks the whole time. Gold Man has a sort of homemade whistle between his tongue and palate that makes every word sound like a dog toy. He rattles squeaks in an auctioneer’s staccato.

His name is Tony Button. The 24-year-old is from Corning, New York and this is his full-time job. In the winter he takes his routine to Florida. In the summer, the Ocean City Boardwalk is home.

“When I was 17,” says Button, “I came to the Boardwalk with a friend. I pulled out my guitar and started singing my songs and gave myself some good tips. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a street artist.

“It all started with being able to express myself and singing my songs on the street to convey my life story through songs.”

Button is one of a growing number of buskers who have flocked to the Ocean City Boardwalk in recent years as his busker reputation grows as a place where buskers can make a decent living off tourist tips.

Street performers have also emerged from the woodwork, as a result of two recent lawsuits in federal courts that have not only strengthened performers’ right to free speech, but also severely curtailed police and municipal regulations over their presence.

THE GOLDMAN

Gold Man is quickly surrounded by a crowd that has smiles on their faces, half of them with hands outstretched, clutching smartphones to capture the show on video. Two giggling girls in bikinis approach him to tip him. Gold Man sees prime opportunity.

He leaps into action, leaping off the bike and strutting over to them. He mimes a hey baby, how are you? as he links arms with one of the girls. Leading them in a right-left-right walk, Gold Man breaks into the dum-dum-ta-dum of a wedding march with his mouth squeak. The crowd goes wild with whistles and yells.

The shift from soulful singer to gleaming statue was abrupt for Button; he has blown his voice by singing too much. The injury severely damaged his vocal cords and left him with a choice: go home and get a regular job or change his role. After seeing many “living statues” in his travels, he chose the Goldman persona. This is his third summer in the role.

“It was a blessing in disguise to hurt my voice,” he says.

To prepare for his performance, Button first refreshes his costume and bike with gold Rust-Oleum spray paint (he’s used at least 100 cans this summer alone). It takes him 15 minutes to coat his hands and face in golden theatrical makeup, then sets out from his Somerset Street holiday home to find a seat on the Boardwalk.

He’s on the boards every day, sometimes 10 hours at a time. He doesn’t stop eating. If he really needs to go to the bathroom, he goes back to his apartment. At the end of the day he is exhausted.

“Honestly, I just get into that zone,” he says. “It comes with time, but once you get into that zone, you sort of get into a flow. You just know what to do at the right times. You learn to read people. See what will interest people and squeak at them. Learn what people won’t bother.

Button plans to work weekends in September before returning to New York. After Thanksgiving he will return to Florida for more busking. He doesn’t reveal how much tips he earns, only that it’s enough to cover his rent and make ends meet.

“Mom and Dad say it’s time to go back and pursue something different, but right now I’m just enjoying making people happy,” says Button. “To see the impact I have on these people. The kids will remember it this year. Knowing that I’m adding something to their vacation and that I’m doing something that people appreciate. That drives me every day.”

THE IRON MAN

First, Stephen Sepulveda left a sign at his feet that simply read “Tips for Pictures.” But that wasn’t direct enough to get the desired results. Now his sign reads, “I’m Iron Man, take a picture, leave $1, thanks, handmade suit.”

“People just took pictures and walked by,” he says. “If they have a sign to read, they can see that it’s more specific: I want you to take a picture, but I also want you to give me something in return. My costume in particular is unique because I built it and I want them to know that it is handmade. It’s not something I can just go online and buy.”

Building comic and fantasy costumes is a passion of the 30-year-old from Fort Myers, Florida. This summer he’s Iron Man. He even sports a goatee, just like Iron Man’s alter ego, fictional Marvel Comics billionaire Tony Stark, so when he pops the mask up he can stay in character.

His red and gold suit is a hodgepodge of sporting goods: lacrosse gloves, motocross armor on the chest, baseball catcher’s leg guards, football thigh guards. His helmet is a modified paint gun mask. He fashioned the metal plate at the heart of the costume from the walls of an old computer. It took about three months to assemble this former Avenger.

“One of the things that’s really good about the Boardwalk is being recognized by kids and families, so they know who you are. They’d rather take a picture with Iron Man or a Minion or an Elsa, anything they know,” he says, referring to the hugely popular cartoons Despicable Me and Frozen.

As if that wasn’t enough, he usually wears drywall stilts, which are also painted to match the costume, allowing him to tower above the crowd. Iron Man on stilts pushes up 7 feet.

This is his only job here for the summer. He walks most days with about $100, money he saves for his family.

“I have a 2-year-old daughter at home,” he says. “They were up here, but they had to go back (to Florida) because of a family emergency. So now I’m here by myself just trying to make enough money so I can go back there to get a place for us and, you know, move on. I’ll get a regular job when I come back.”

Outside on the boards, a boy of about 5 sees the costumed hero and his face breaks into a happy smile. “Hello, Ironman!” he screams with a wave. “Hi buddy! How are you?” Iron Man answers. Still enchanted, the boy looks over his shoulder as he walks the boardwalk with his family.

Sepulveda mounts his stilts and pauses to collect himself.

“It’s tiring. Long days, hot sun. But I think we all really enjoy it.”

THE MAGIC MAN

The Amazing Josini wears a yellow Hawaiian shirt, straw hat and headset mic. His performance room is cordoned off and children are sitting at his feet.

He does a sleight of hand where he shows the card in his palm, wipes it with his other hand and the card disappears. He does a version of this several times in a row, and with each move, more people gather around him. “Oh, I have to see that,” says a woman, stopping.

Joseph Smith, 56, started his show on the Boardwalk five years ago, mixing magic tricks with comedy bits, like banter with a monkey puppet. The Baltimore native now resides in Salisbury.

On a good day, he can bring home a $300 tip, “but that doesn’t always happen.”

“I know I’m not going to get rich doing this out here. That’s not going to happen,” says Smith. “But I got a lot of parties this year. I might do up to 15, 20 parties in the off season, after September when everything slows down. I make a bit of money, but it’s also about promoting myself.”

He has been a practicing magician for 35 years. He started the craft at age 14, feasting on card trick basics at the public library.

“And it’s still the easiest and cheapest way to get started,” he says. “It won’t cost you a dime. You don’t even have to borrow the book, you can sit at a desk and read it. I tell the kids that because I get that a lot.”

With endless practice, it has stood the test of time. He worked his way into the Yogi Magic Club in Baltimore. He started playing comedy clubs and schools. “It’s been an exciting journey. Actually, he still is,” says Smith.

The Amazing Josini now comes to the Boardwalk five days a week. He loves the camaraderie and interaction with other buskers but really loves the instant reaction he can get from a crowd. The high fives. The cries of “Oh man you’re good!” Smith says sometimes it’s better than getting a tip.

“Because what they tell you is, ‘I’ve been really, thoroughly entertained.’ And that’s the ultimate goal for any artist, to know that your audience wasn’t just amused. It’s one thing to amuse them, it’s actually to entertain them,” — he slams his fist on his chest — “that brings me right here, mate ’cause that’s what I’m aiming for.”
