Cat Zingano

American mixed martial arts fighter

Cathile Deborah “Cat” Zingano [3] (née Albert; born July 1, 1982) is an American mixed martial artist currently signed to Bellator MMA, competing in the women’s featherweight division. Zingano also competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), becoming the first woman to win a UFC fight by technical knockout (TKO) on April 13, 2013. At the time of her retirement from the UFC, she was #7 in the official UFC bantamweight rankings.[4] As of June 28, 2022, she is #4 in the Bellator women’s pound-for-pound rankings and #1 in the Bellator women’s featherweight rankings.

Early life[edit]

Zingano began her martial arts career with wrestling at the age of 12. She attended Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado, where she got involved in martial arts after joining the wrestling team. She eventually became part of the University of the Cumberlands (2001) and MacMurray College wrestling teams and became a four-time All-American and National Champion.

Zingano discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in 2007 shortly after she started competing and had won many tournaments including the World Championships (Mundials) in Los Angeles and the Rio de Janeiro State Championships in Brazil, as well as several state titles in Colorado.

In October 2007, after studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a few months, Zingano entered her first amateur mixed martial arts fight and knew immediately that MMA was something she wanted to compete in.[8]

Mixed martial arts career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Zingano made her pro MMA debut on June 13, 2008 at Ring of Fire 32 [9], submitting Karina Taylor in the first round with an armbar.

On December 10, 2010, Zingano faced Carina Damm at Crowbar MMA: Winter Brawl in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She defeated Damm by TKO in the second round.

Zingano faced Takayo Hashi on May 14, 2011 at Fight To Win: Outlaws. She defeated Hashi by knockout after a slam in the third round.[13]

Invicta FC and Strikeforce[ edit ]

Zingano was scheduled to face Anita Rodriguez at Invicta Fighting Championships 1 but was forced to withdraw from the card due to injury.

Zingano had registered at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy against Amanda Nunes on September 29, 2012, but the event was canceled when Gilbert Melendez, who was scheduled to defend his title against Pat Healy, sustained a knee injury in practice that forced his withdrawal from the map.[16]

Zingano instead faced Raquel Pennington on October 6, 2012 at Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama. She defeated Pennington by submission due to a rear naked choke in the second round.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]

In February 2013, it was announced that Zingano would compete in the second women’s fight in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) history. She fought Miesha Tate on April 13, 2013 at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. Zingano defeated Tate by TKO in the third round. The fight was called the fight of the night.[22]

As the winner of the fight, Zingano would become a trainer on The Ultimate Fighter 18 against Ronda Rousey and be the next challenger for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. However, on May 28, it was announced that Zingano was out as Rousey’s coach/opponent after she suffered a knee injury that required surgery earlier in the month and was replaced by Tate. On October 3, 2013, Zingano underwent PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and stem cell treatment on both knees.[25]

After a nearly year and a half absence from the sport due to injury, Zingano returned to the Octagon in the fall of 2014. She faced Amanda Nunes on September 27, 2014 at UFC 178. After losing the first round, Zingano came back in the following two rounds only to win via TKO in the third round. After the fight, she said, “All the first round I was just banging my head in, I was dizzy; I couldn’t be in the light for a month they were all screwed up. I had never been beaten like this in a fight. You know, it really freaked me out because, man, I’m the only parent to my son. If I’m a total mess and I can’t drive and I can’t work and say this injury is so bad I can’t fight anymore…what if I can’t? talk, because my son’s life depends on my health.”[27]

A matchup between Ronda Rousey and Zingano took place at UFC 184 for the women’s bantamweight title. Zingano was quickly submitted in the opening seconds of the fight.

Zingano returned to Julianna Peña on July 9, 2016 at UFC 200. She lost the match by decision, with the judges returning all 29-28 points in Peña’s favour.

Zingano faced Keteln Vieira on March 3, 2018 at UFC 222. She lost the fight via split decision.[33]

She then faced Marion Reneau on July 14, 2018 at UFC Fight Night 133. She won the fight unanimously.[35]

Zingano faced Megan Anderson in a featherweight bout on December 29, 2018 at UFC 232. She bizarrely lost the fight, via technical knockout in round one after suffering an eye injury from an Anderson kick that didn’t allow her to continue. Anderson’s toe grazed Zingano’s eyeball, rendering her unable to continue due to blurred vision.[37] Although the injury looked like it could potentially be serious, Zingano later reported that her eye was improving.[38] On January 14, 2019, it was revealed that Zingano had appealed the loss due to the Unified Rules of MMA definition of eye gouging. CSAC confirmed Anderson’s victory at the February 19, 2019 commission meeting.[40]

On August 14, 2019, it was announced that Zingano had been released from the UFC.[41]
