THE REVERIES OF VALENS’ DONNA

CITRUS HEIGHTS, CALIFORNIA. — The first hint Donna Ludwig had that she might become a rock ‘n’ roll legend came on a bright October day in 1958. She and six of her friends were driving their father’s white convertible down the main street on St Downtown San Fernando had bought them, top to bottom, radio blaring. Suddenly, a new song warbled across the airwaves and almost had her running off the road.

“I had a girl,” Ritchie Valens purred, “Donna was her name…”

Her friends’ excited screams drowned out the rest of the tune, but she already knew it. It was the same song Valens sang to her on the phone a year ago after they decided to start dating other people. She had cried when she heard it at the time, not because she suspected he would ever make her famous, but because she was 15 and had a boy sing a song he had written about her, even late at night , when no one else could hear enough seemed like a dream come true.

The world first learned that a real-life Donna had inspired the classic teenage lawsuit, which sold nearly a million copies in the late ’50s until five months later, when 17-year-old Valens died in the same plane crash, the Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper killed.

Donna recalls being called from class to the principal’s office at James Monroe High School, where the press took pictures of her. She was pale and thin, clutching a framed 8×10 photo of Valens tightly to her chest.

She received more than 8,000 letters after a fan magazine printed her address. Deejays began performing a cheesy spinoff song about their loss, “Letter to Donna” by a group called The Kittens. Elvis Presley, whom she had never met, had one of his bodyguards set her up on a date so he could quiz her all about Valens.

29 years later, Donna Ludwig is back in the limelight. The release of La Bamba, the summer film that celebrates Valens’ short life, ensures her an enduring footnote in pop culture history.

“I really can’t believe this is happening again,” says the 45-year-old CEO. “It’s really too much. I feel kind of silly.”

Her name is Donna Fox-Coots now, and she runs a Cal Fed mortgage office in this suburb of Sacramento. Her employees never realized she was the Donna until she announced she was taking a day off to attend the film’s premiere. The men in her office describe her as one of the boys, a down-to-earth career woman with a ready, throaty laugh. “If I had known I was getting all this attention,” she says, “I would have lost 20 pounds.”

In “La Bamba” actress Danielle von Zerneck portrays Donna as a giggling, rather reserved schoolgirl. In reality, Fox-Coots says, “I was something of a little rebel. I wasn’t cute and innocent, I was more of a hell driver. I ran with a pack of girls and I was their leader.”

Her independent streak gave her the courage to date Valens against her father’s vehement opposition. Valens, real name Richard Valenzuela, was a Mexican-American who lived in a shack on the wrong side of town. Fox-Coots, whose father ran a Packard dealership in Beverly Hills, regularly sneaked out of her bedroom window to meet Valens at San Fernando hangouts like the Rainbow Roller Rink or Bob’s Big Boy. She and Valens had met at a car club party called the Igniters the summer before her sophomore year. After her date passed out from drinking too much beer, Valens began singing “We Belong Together” directly to her. It became her song.

When Fox-Coots recalls Valens, it can seem like a teenager speaking through an adult body. Her memories are those of a 15 year old. “Here’s my scrapbook,” she says, pulling a thick brown album from behind her desk. She opens it with a glossy studio shot of Valens. “See that curl in the middle of his forehead?” She says. “We argued about it. I didn’t like it that much.” She turns a few pages to another photo. “See his hair in this picture?” she says lost in thought. “I liked it better that way.”

She and Valens liked to walk in the rain with their arms crossed. They always met in the hallways of the school between classes. “I was attracted to him because he was a nice man, uh…” She holds back. “I mean because he was a nice boy. He didn’t swear. He didn’t get drunk.” And whenever she laid her head on his shoulder, he always smelled so clean, like soap and water.

He was also a very good kisser, but that, she swears, is about all. “As far as I know, Ritchie died a virgin.”

Fox-Coots worked with writer-director Luis Valdez to research La Bamba, but says she was “grossly offended” when she read the first draft of the script. “The sex scenes between me and Ritchie were my big thing,” she says. “The studio told me they would take them out and I said I need some kind of guarantee. This guy {from Columbia Pictures} says, ‘Trust me.’ Trust me! I hung up and called my attorney.”

She never had to file a lawsuit and is very happy with the result of “La Bamba”. Not only have the torrid encounters between her and Valens been erased, but he is portrayed by actor Lou Diamond Phillips as a sensitive, caring young man who is constantly teased about his sexual innocence by his older brother Bob. “It was a 360-degree change from the first draft,” she says. “Originally they had Ritchie as this Chicano toughie… Ritchie wasn’t like that at all.”

After “La Bamba,” some people have wondered what role fox coots really played in Valen’s life. In the film, Valens is obsessed with Donna and plans to marry her. But hardly anyone in the Valenzuela family had met her before his death, and one of Valens’ former business partners recently stated that Fox-Coots was little more than a casual acquaintance of Valens. “I remember Ritchie saying he wrote this song for his girl Donna,” says Bob Keane, his former manager, “but I’ve never heard anything else about her.”

Rock historian Beverly Mandheim says Valens was undoubtedly involved with Fox coots, but that she wasn’t his only infatuation. “I think it’s safe to say that Ritchie Valens didn’t die a virgin,” says Mandheim, who spent 10 years researching his life for her book, Ritchie Valens: The First Latino Rocker, out this month is published by Bilingual Press in Arizona State University.

The teenager was likely dating while on tour in Hawaii and was apparently dating a mystery woman from New York at the time of his death. The wife, Diane Olson, showed up at Valen’s funeral and told his family they were engaged. She moved in with his sister Connie but disappeared two months later. “No one has seen her since then, but everyone is looking for her,” says Mandheim. “She certainly has a story to tell.”

Fox-Coots recalls meeting Olson at the funeral. “I asked if she had dated Ritchie and she said yes. I couldn’t tell if she was a follower or not, but if Ritchie had had a girlfriend, I would have been the last person he would have told.”

Fox-Coots says she and Valens “made an arrangement” after he dropped out of high school to record music and tour the country. They dated others, but whenever he was in town they were together. He regularly called her on the road and sometimes mentioned the wedding, but she never really believed that they would get married. “I thought he was going to be really, really famous and that would be it.”

Instead of making her feel special, she was just as often embarrassed about being the real Donna. “Going back to school after he died was so hard. I was devastated. I cried the whole time and everyone pointed fingers at me. I didn’t want a big thing to be made of it. It was hard.”

For almost 30 years she has been asked if Valens is the love of her life. “I was 15 years old, for heaven’s sake,” she exclaims. “Who knows? I really liked Ritchie, it really mattered to me, but I can’t say I loved him. I was a child. I loved my mother, my sister and my brother.”

It’s no coincidence that Fox-Coots doesn’t count her father among her loved ones. She has never forgiven his “bigoted” rejection of Valens or the record deal he pushed her towards after the singer’s death. Hoping to capitalize on the brief romance, her father arranged for her to sing two songs, “Lost Without You” and “Now That You’re Gone,” on the pop label.

Fox-Coots agreed to sing the songs, she says, but only after a deal was drawn up that ensured her share of the royalties would go to Valens’ mother. The record, which never became popular, remains an acute embarrassment for Fox-Coots. “I don’t want to talk about it,” she says. “It was awful. It just upsets me too much.” On her 18th birthday, she moved out of her father’s house and never visited him again.

Her big date with Elvis Presley came a year after she graduated from high school while she was working as a nightclub hostess in Los Angeles. Red West, a Presley bodyguard, had learned from one of Fox-Coots’ friends that she was the legendary Donna. One night he called out out of the blue and drawled, “Do you want to go with Elvis tonight?”

“He wanted to know everything about Ritchie,” recalls Fox-Coots, who accompanied Presley to a penthouse party at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. “Could he read music? Did he write his own songs? You know, stuff like that. It was a nice, simple date.”

A year later, at the age of 19, she married a musician who sang and played guitar. Looking back, she suspects she was trying to replace Valens. “He looked like Ritchie,” she says, “but he wasn’t the same kind of person.” The marriage only lasted a year.

Since then, Fox-Coots has married twice more. She lives with her third, as she says, last husband in Pollock Pines, a small community in the hills near Sacramento. She has two daughters who grew up boasting to their friends that their mother was the real Donna. “Of course,” she says, “no one believed them.”

Sometimes even she has a hard time believing it ever happened. “God, it’s been so long,” she says. “When I was young, I dreamed about it for a long time. I once dreamed that Ritchie came and sat at the foot of my bed and said, ‘Everything is fine.’ I wouldn’t even get on a plane until I was 27.”

The absurdity of Fox-Coots’ situation doesn’t escape her. Here she is, a middle-aged woman worried about her double chin speaking to the media about this child who will forever be 17. She’s only agreed to a few interviews, she says, and then only because she’s doing “La Bamba” for the Valenzuela family, who get a percentage of the film’s earnings financially exploited his death.

She says she’d love to tell the world what it’s like to be a living legend, but says she’s never really felt like one. She doesn’t think she has a place in pop history. “Ritchie deserves one. Not me. Our relationship was a very, very short part of his very short life. So he had a girlfriend.

Still, both times she saw “La Bamba,” she had to run to the lobby to cry. Her tears seem as much for a time gone as for a lost love. “I remember the scene where Ritchie and I go to a drive-in movie theater,” she says wistfully. “They hit the coke glasses just right. I remember them so clearly.”

Seeing bits of her youth flash up on the big screen even brought back the old dreams. Only this time they are a little different.

“It’s really funny, I’m going to dream about Ritchie now and see Lou Diamond Phillips instead,” she says. “I have to say to myself, ‘No, Donna! It’s Ritchie you knew, not Lou Diamond!’ Is that weird or what?”

Mother of Rock Star Ritchie Valens Dies

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (AP) _ Connie Valenzuela, the mother of the late rock singer Ritchie Valens, has apparently died of a heart attack. She was 72.

Valens, whose nightly rise to success was documented in that year’s hit film “La Bamba,” was born in 1959 at the age of 17 along with Buddy Holly and J.P. Richardson, also known as Big Bopper, died in a plane crash in Iowa.

Valenzuela died Sunday at Watsonville Community Hospital. Her niece, Diane Amezquita of San Jose, said she has been in the hospital since Friday.

Though she’d lived in Watsonville since 1962, Valenzuela sometimes spent time in the San Fernando Valley home north of Los Angeles that her son bought for her in 1958 with his music earnings, Amezquita said.

She worked as a waitress, farmhand, bartender and cleaner. Their son, born Ricardo Valenzuela, grew up in farm camps in central California and worked as a laborer in Campbell’s orchards.

In the mid-1950s, the family moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Pacoima, where the teenager attended high school and began playing in a rock band. As his career took off, he changed his name to Ritchie Valens.

Valens’ hits included “Come On, Let’s Go,” “Donna,” and a rock version of a traditional Mexican folk song, “La Bamba.”
