In 2018, Johnny Knoxville said he was willing to make a fourth Jackass film that might feature some new cast “just to get some fresh blood in there.”[16] He said he continues to write ideas for stunts and that “a ton” was set aside should the project get the green light. In July 2019, former cast member Chris Raab said he interviewed the Jackass crew on his Bathing Break podcast and found that everyone was still open to a fourth film should Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze agree.[16] In late 2019, Knoxville met with Tremaine and released a 200-page concept document for a fourth Jackass film. They agreed to film with the entire cast for two days to see “if it still feels right” to do Jackass 4. “Honestly, after only five minutes of shooting, we were ready to make a movie,” Tremaine said. 17] In September 2020, Steve-O had said he was surprised the film “even came to fruition”.[18]
In May 2021, Knoxville stated the film would be his final contribution to the Jackass franchise. “You can only take so many risks before something irreversible happens,” Knoxville said. “I feel like I was very fortunate to have taken the risks I did and still walk around.”[19] During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on July 12, 2021, Knoxville revealed the film’s title and released the first official photos.[20]

He stated that Tremaine fought with the studio to keep Margera in the film, but Margera wasn’t sure if Paramount would allow him to take part in the filming. On February 11, Margera posted several videos to his Instagram account in which he admitted breaking his sobriety and claimed he was officially fired for filming Jackass 4.[12] Throughout the video, Margera could be seen crying, throwing up and alluding to looking up “how to tie a noose” before moving to Oceanside, Calif. Margera claimed Paramount forced him to take antidepressants, submit to random urine tests, and check into two rehabilitation facilities using his own money. He also expressed his disdain for Tremaine, Knoxville and Jonze before urging his fans to boycott the film. He then asked his followers to send him money to make his own movie to compete with Jackass Forever. The videos were removed from Margera’s Instagram account shortly after their release.[12][22] On May 25, 2021, Tremaine filed an injunction against Margera alleging that Margera harassed Tremaine and Knoxville via Instagram.[23] Tremaine was granted an additional three-year restraining order that was extended to Tremaine’s wife and children after Margera allegedly sent death threats to the family.[24] On August 9, 2021, Margera filed a lawsuit against Knoxville, Jonze and Tremaine, as well as Paramount Pictures, MTV, Dickhouse Entertainment, and Gorilla Flicks, alleging that he was wrongfully fired from production on the film.[25] Margera also said the film used contributions he made prior to his release, and as a result sought an injunction against the film’s release in October.[26] On January 12, 2022, Knoxville said a scene Margera filmed remains in effect despite the lawsuit.[14] They came up with a settlement after Bam filed on April 14, 2022 to have the lawsuit dismissed. It was followed by the 2002 feature film, Jackass: The Movie, which was essentially an extended, uncensored sequel to the TV show. The show was created by Johnny Knoxville, Spike Jonze and Jeff Tremaine.
Although the cast were often categorized as a troop, in reality most of the filming was done separately by different groups. Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn and Brandon DiCamillo were all filmed in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius and others in California, and Dave England and Ehren McGhehey in Oregon.
In April 2001, Johnny Knoxville and other cast members took part in the Gumball 3000, a rally from Britain to Russia and back. Footage of this made up the entire seventh episode of the third series.
In the summer of 2003, Johnny Knoxville left the show. The remaining cast members are now on the spinoff shows Viva La Bam and Wildboyz.
A UK version of the series was produced by MTV called Dirty Sanchez (or Team Sanchez in the US). It is more controversial than Jackass with a high content of extreme stunts and strong profanity, as well as full of frontal male nudity.
There is also a South African parody of Jackass and other “extreme” shows of its genre called Crazy Monkey.

Controversial
Jackass has been blamed for a number of deaths and injuries involving teenagers and children mimicking the stunts. In 2001, Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut asked MTV to either shut down the show altogether or to tone down its content after several incidents.
The Smoking Gun, a website containing police report and court documents, published a lawsuit filed by a man named “Jack Ass” who was suing MTV and Viacom, its parent company.
