Vicki Lawrence
American actor, comedian, and singer
Vicki Ann Lawrence (née Axelrad; [1] born March 26, 1949), [2] sometimes known as Vicki Lawrence Schultz, is an American actress, comedian, and pop singer. She is known for her character Mama (Thelma Harper). Lawrence came from many characters beyond Mama on CBS’s The Carol Burnett Show from 1967 to 1978, the entire variety show series.
In the 7th season of The Carol Burnett Show, Lawrence began his famous Mama role in a comedy sketch called The Family. Produced only as a one-off skit, The Family’s unexpected success with audiences led to it having recurring installments for the program’s last 5 seasons. With Lawrence portraying the character of a cold, unloving, widowed elderly mother to the neurotic, unfortunate Eunice (played by Burnett despite Lawrence being 16 years younger), The Family raises some of The Carol Burnett Show’s most famous blooper moments.
The success of The Family skits eventually led Lawrence to land his own sitcom on television, Mama’s Family, his character becoming the focal point and Mama’s habits expanding and changing drastically. Continuing Mama’s evolution, Lawrence has been hosting an untelevised stand-up comedy routine since 2001, “Vicki and Mama: A Two Woman Show.” Additionally, Lawrence has made numerous post-Mama’s Family guest TV show appearances in her famous Mama role.
In 1973, Lawrence became a one-hit wonder songstress, which went on the U.S. charts. with “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”. It reached number one on both the United States and Canada charts. Lawrence has multiple Emmy Award nominations, winning one in 1976. [3] She also has many Golden Globe nominees, all for The Carol Burnett Show. Most recently, Lawrence starred in the Fox sitcom series The Cool Kids from 2018 to 2019.
Early life [edit]
Lawrence was born Vicki Ann Axelrad in Inglewood, California, [2] [4] the son of Anne Alene (née Loyd) and Howard Axelrad, a certified public accountant for Max Factor. [5] The family last name was legally changed to “Lawrence” when Vicki was young. [6] He graduated from Morningside High School in Inglewood, class of 1967. Lawrence originally planned on becoming a dental hygienist. She attended UCLA while on The Carol Burnett Show, and changed her major to theater arts, but quit after two years. [6]
In high school, he auditioned and got into the musical group The Young Americans. He remained in the group almost until the end of high school. By being with the group, he gained experience from touring, performing at Oscars, interacting with well-known performers such as Johnny Mathis and Louis Armstrong, and performing on The Andy Williams Show. [6]
In her senior year, she participated in the Miss Fireball of Inglewood contest for the local fire ball. A reporter for a local newspaper wrote a story about the contest and said Lawrence had a striking resemblance to a young Carol Burnett. An avid fan of the letter-writer, Lawrence’s mother encouraged him to write a letter, which Lawrence did, along with the newspaper article.
After receiving the letter, Burnett saw Lawrence’s father’s name in the phone book, called him, and said he was going to watch the Miss Fireball contest. Lawrence won the contest and called Burnett to the stage to crown him. Coincidentally Burnett is looking for an actor to act as his younger brother in his upcoming show. After a few months and auditioning, Lawrence got the part at the age of eighteen, specifically Chrissy playing in the sketches “Carol and Sis”. [6]
After Lawrence was given a job on The Carol Burnett Show, Burnett and Harvey Korman took him under their wings. Korman taught him various sketch comedy skills, such as listening not only for a cue line, and also taught him in other areas, such as speaking in different accents. Lawrence identified Korman and Burnett as his mentors, and referred to his experience on the show as the “Harvard school of comedy”.Lawrence said he learned show business from Burnett and looked up to him, and the two share a very close friendship. [6]
