KATONAH, NY — Set just a few miles from the Hudson Valley on the mean streets of Manhattan, the tale of unhappy lovers in West Side Story stars some of Hollywood’s brightest stars, but the actor many of us will see for originally hails from Yonkers and graduated from Harvey School in Katonah.
The Steven Spielberg version of the Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical classic hits theaters tonight, tonight (Friday) and the eyes of local moviegoers will be on Annelise Cepero, who after graduating from Harvey School attended Montclair State University in 2013. She is now an actress, singer and dancer based in New York City.
Cepero plays the role of Provi, the friend of the main character Maria. Spielberg assembled an impressive cast for the film, including Ansel Elgort as Tony and Hollywood icon Rita Moreno, who starred as Bernardo’s girlfriend Anita in 1961’s West Side Story. Moreno reprises his role as Valentina in Spielberg’s remake.
After several delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated remake of West Side Story has finally landed in theaters – and it’s as big a hit as fans of the musical could have hoped.
Complete newcomer Rachel Zegler, meanwhile, plays Maria. The singer-songwriter previously had no screen credits and was scouted for the film after posting a video of herself singing I Feel Pretty from the musical on social media.
Elsewhere, Ariana DeBose, who starred in the original 2015 Broadway cast of Hamilton, takes on the role of Anita, while David Alvarez portrays the leader of the Sharks and Maria’s brother, Bernardo.
Spielberg’s West Side Story picked up three trophies including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy at the 2022 Golden Globes Awards on Sunday, January 9, while Zegler won Best Actress in Genre and DeBose also received a trophy for the best supporting actress took home in the category.
