Isaac Burton (Sydney Kings) his time in the NBL, the Arizona State point shaving scandal and the Netflix documentary Bad Sports

Isaac Burton played 96 games in four seasons in the NBL for both the Sydney Kings and Newcastle Falcons. A defensive ball hawk who wowed crowds with flashy dunks, he was a fan favorite in Sydney and the NBL in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Burton became involved in a point-shaving scandal while he was a basketball (and baseball) player at Arizona State University, a historic moment that was recently chronicled in a Netflix documentary titled Bad Sports.

The documentary focuses primarily on the players at the center of the ASU scandal, namely Stevin “Hedake” Smith and Burton, but also zooms out to reveal the real villain in their story: the NCAA, which began handing out inadequate scholarships to these athletes , seeing point shaving as their only option for survival.

How Do We See Arizona State’s Point-Shaving Scandal in the New NIL Era

At first glance, it might be easy to mistake something like Netflix’s Bad Sport as the streamer’s latest batch of real crime candy. Volume 1 of the Sports-Doc series was released last week and features six episodes covering some of sport’s biggest scandals in recent decades, from Luciano Moggi’s referee controversy to the figure skating debacle at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Of the six posts, however, it’s Bad Sport’s look at the 1994 Arizona state point-shaving scandal that transcends the talking-head true-crime machine. If you want to be reminded of the scandal that shook collegiate athletics back then, Arizona State University’s Steve “Hedake” Smith and Isaac Burton became embroiled with campus bookie Benny Silman. Smith allegedly bagged $20,000 for shaving points against Oregon State. After the season ended, Smith and Burton both pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges, and Silman was jailed for his role in all of it. Surprisingly, all three main actors – Silman, Smith and Burton – give in-depth interviews in the Netflix documentary.

“So I was just trying to make easy money,” says Burton. “I didn’t really think about it, like consequences. I just thought: Hey, I want the money. i want the money And I pay for that.”

“Every time you get a paper bag full of hundreds, it’s addicting,” Smith adds elsewhere in the documentary. “It changed me. It changed me.”

Watching Smith and Burton in particular talk about financial woes during their college playing days, it’s hard not to think of the obvious thing that doesn’t come up in Bad Sport: the long, long debate over whether collegiate athletes have it should or should not be paid for their services. Whether the filmmakers intended it or not, the long-running debate looms over the Bad Sport episode, with the core of the naming, image and likeness rights (NIL) changing just months ago. Starting July 1st, college athletes can now make money by selling their NIL rights, the impact of which we’ve seen throughout the game. (If you want an extreme example, check out what Alabama quarterback Bryce Young pulled off this fall with NIL deals that )

To see the former ASU stars reflect on the days when they wondered where their next meal would come from honestly puts a new twist on the scandal that sports fans have openly scoffed at for decades. Would any of this ever have happened if the players had been better taken care of back then? Of course, Smith, Burton and Silman should never have messed with varsity tires. But if anything, Bad Sport has you wondering how the lives of many collegiate athletes would have been different if state laws and the NCAA had looked the way they do now.
