Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry has been named new head football coach at Virginia Tech, the Hokies announced Tuesday.
Pry, 51, replaces former Hokies coach Justin Fuente, who was absent as Hokies coach in Nov. 16 after his teams went 43-31 in six seasons. Pry returned to Blacksburg, where he served as a defensive graduate assistant for the Hokies from 1995 to 1997 under head coach Frank Beamer and defensive coordinator Bud Foster.
“On behalf of Amy and our family, we are extremely grateful to President [Timothy] Sands and [athletic director] Whit [Babcock] for extending us this opportunity at Virginia Tech,” Pry said in a statement released by the school. . “Working for Coach Beamer and Coach Foster as a graduate assistant in the 1990s, I had the privilege of being part of this program as the Hokies established themselves as a national power, constantly proving that they could beat anyone in the country. .

Pry, who has worked the past six seasons as the Nittany Lions defensive coordinator, has helped build the top-25 units in total defense in eight of his past 12 seasons, including four at Penn State, three at Vanderbilt and one in Georgia Southern. The Nittany Lions are ranked seventh in scoring defense this season, giving up 16.8 points per game.
ESPN reported last week that the Hokies were committed to Pry after two candidates – Dave Clawson of Wake Forest and Billy Napier of Louisiana – declined interest in the job. Clawson signed a contract extension with the Demon Deacons, and Napier accepted the head-coaching position in Florida.
Pry, a native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, has worked under James Franklin at Penn State and at Vanderbilt and is in his 30th year of coaching. Early in his career, Pry was a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech in the mid -1990s.

Pry began his coaching career in 1993 as an outside linebacker and defensive backs coach for the NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg Warriors. [4] From 1995 to 1997 Pry served as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech under defensive coordinator Bud Foster, where he assisted the Hokies in three bowl games. [3] Pry spent his next four seasons at FCS Western Carolina University. He coached the defensive line in 1998 and 1999, and defensive backs and special teams in 2000 and 2001. He also served as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) liaison. [2] Served as defensive coordinator in Louisiana-Lafayette from 2002 to 2006, helping the Ragin ‘Cajuns to their first Sun Belt Conference championship in 2005. [5] As defensive line coach for the Memphis Tigers from 2007 to 2009, he molded a defensive line in 2008 to one of the best in Conference USA. [3]

While serving as defensive coordinator at Georgia Southern in 2010, the Pry’s Eagles finished ninth on overall defense (286.93), 11th on scoring defense (18.47) and 11th on passing defense (159.93). His defensive unit helped the Eagles to a 10-5 overall record, which included a win against No. 1 Appalachian State and a exit in the NCAA FCS semifinals. [6] It also included a 31–15 win over William and Mary in the second round of the playoffs, which pitted Pry against would -be coaching mates Bob Shoop (DC) and David Corley Jr. (QBs). [7]

On January 31, 2011, Pry [8] was announced as Co-Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers coach at Vanderbilt. In his first season, Pry helped coach Senior linebacker Chris Marve to a spot on the Second Team All-SEC squad as Vanderbilt ended the regular season 6-6. Against Tennessee, linebacker Archie Barnes returned a Tyler Bray interception 100 yards for a touchdown.
The 2012 season saw Vanderbilt finish with 9 wins, including a 7-game straight win to end the season. Standout defenses on presentation included a 40-0 victory over Kentucky and a 23-point victory over Tennessee. Other SEC wins in 2012 included Auburn, Missouri, and Ole Miss, which finished with a 5-3 conference record and #23 national ranking. Vanderbilt won the 2012 Music City Bowl against NC State 38-24.
The 2013 team ended with another 9-4 record, including wins over #15 Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee. Despite an 8-4 regular season record, Vanderbilt was placed in the 2014 BBVA Compass Bowl where they beat Houston 41-24. Again, Vanderbilt finished the season ranked #24.
While at Vanderbilt, Pry was instrumental in recruiting future NFL linebacker standouts Stephen Weatherly, Oren Burks, and 2016 All American Zach Cunningham to Nashville.Pry also joins former Vanderbilt defensive coaches Bill Parcells, Perry Fewell, Phillip Fulmer, and Buddy Ryan who have served as head coaches on major NCAA or NFL programs after spending time at Vanderbilt.

For his efforts, Pry was a finalist for 2014 Football Scoop’s Linebackers Coach of the Year. [9] He helped Mike Hull win the Big Ten Butkus-Fitzgerald Award, given to the conference’s best linebacker and eight All-America honors in 2014. Hull’s 140 tackles ranked 7th in the nation, topping the Big Ten Conference, and tied at fourth most for a Nittany Lion in a season. [10] [11]
After the departure of defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, Pry was promoted to associate head coach and defensive coordinator on January 10, 2016. [4]
In 2017, the defense finished the regular season seventh in the nation and second in the Big Ten in scoring defense, averaging 15.5 points per game. Pry’s defense also finished with a pair of shutout victories and allowed just over 20 points in a game just three times. Seven times he has seen his defense hold opponents without a score in even one half game (Akron, Georgia State, Indiana, Northwestern, Michigan, Rutgers, Maryland). [12] Penn State finished with an 11–2 record that ended with a Fiesta Bowl victory over the Washington Huskies. [13] Three players were selected from defense in the 2018 NFL Draft, safety Troy Apke in the fourth round (109th overall), safety Marcus Allen in the fifth round (148th overall) and cornerback Christian Campbell was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round (th -182 in general). In 2018, Pry’s defense led the nation in sacks per game with 3.62 and finished in the fourth tackle for loss with 8.2. [17] [18] Penn State secondary has had one of the best seasons since 2014, finishing the season with 13 interceptions and allowing a 53.6 completion rate. [19] The Nittany Lions also held three opponents at 60 or fewer yards in the air, the first time PSU had achieved this victory since the 1976 season. [20] Cornerback Amani Oruwariye and defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos made the All-Big Ten first team. Six additional players, from defense, received recognition in all conferences. In 2019, the Penn State defense finished the season eighth nationally in scoring defense (16.0ppg), fifth nationally in rushing defense (95 ypg), first nationally in forced fumbles (22) and seventh nationally with 3.46 sacks per game.
