President’s Distinguished Entrepreneur Speaker Series

Dan DiZio ’95, ESU graduate and founder of the Philly Pretzel Factory, began his entrepreneurial journey at age 11 when he successfully sold pretzels at a busy Philadelphia intersection and had neighborhood kids work for him in several areas of the city .

In 1998, Dan and his ESU college roommate Len Lehman ’94 opened the first Philly Pretzel Factory in Northeast Philadelphia and created the world’s largest Philly-style pretzel bakery. In 2004 they founded Soft Pretzel Franchise Systems, Inc. with over 150 locations. In 2012, Dan appeared on the reality series Undercover Boss.

Philly Pretzel Factory

Our founder, Dan DiZio, grew up eating pretzels. He started selling soft pretzels in his neighborhood at age 11 and became a child entrepreneur with a sales team of kids from around town. He missed pretzels when he went to school, so after he graduated, Dan teamed up with his college friend Len Lehman to start the original Philly Pretzel Factory in Philadelphia’s Mayfair neighborhood. Dan and Len were inspired by their love of pretzels and their experiences at the original Philadelphia pretzel bakeries, so it was no surprise that their own pretzels were delicious! They had great respect for the Founding Fathers, whose warehouse bakeries in and around Philadelphia kept locals fed at all hours of the day. So opening their first Philly Pretzel Factory as a real storefront rather than in an industrial building was an experiment, a sort of why not try between the two. The result was a line that never waned and a fan base that was always hungry for more! Now, after more than twenty years of twisting, the Philly Pretzel Factory is 145+ stores strong and making things better as we grow into more states each year.

Our original storefront at 7366 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia was the only thing we could afford at the time, and it transformed our “factory” model into a retail outlet that still serves hot, delicious pretzels seven days a week. Who knew this was the start of Where Better Things Are Made?

We took a rental truck from Philly to Florida to buy original pretzel gear from retired pretzel makers. We’ve made improvements over time and today we custom build all of our equipment to our specifications for every Philly Pretzel Factory in the United States.

Soft Pretzels A Philadelphia Culinary Tradition – PhillyHistory Blog

Just like other major cities and tourist hotspots, Philadelphia has its own unique array of delicious edibles. New York is known for bagels, Chicago for its butter crust pizza and Savannah for its heavenly chocolates. Philadelphia has achieved similar culinary fame, not only for cheesesteaks and water ice cream (typically known as “Wudder Ice Cream” by locals), but also for the delicious, chewy, salty “Get-Em,” which is served almost everywhere in Philadelphia to find is ”, soft twisted pretzels. Philly’s Soft Pretzels are breakfast for many commuters on the run, reliable snacks for the late-night muscle people, and for about fifty cents a piece if you buy them individually, the big salty convolutions even come with yellow mustard (or not). topped off as a “hearty” lunch or dinner for the hungry college student who’s short on cash. Soft pretzels are so coveted in this city that some report that Philadelphia consumes up to 12 times the national average in pretzels each year.

So, how exactly did the pretzel earn its place as one of the best treats in town? According to legend, pretzels began as early as 610 AD, when Italian monks used the pretiolas, or “small rewards,” to encourage children to be diligent in their prayer studies. While the Pretiolas soon became popular in Austria and Germany, where they were known as “Bretzels,” it wasn’t until over ten centuries later that they made their way to the United States in the hands of immigrants who would eventually be identified as Pennsylvania Dutch.

While accounts vary, one source claims that the first American pretzel was baked in 1861, about 75 miles west of Philadelphia in Lititz, Pennsylvania. The story goes that bread baker Ambrose Roth received the recipe from a tramp sometime around 1850 as a thank you for a warm meal and some hospitality. Roth then passed the recipe on to his apprentice Julius Sturgis, who went on to found the country’s first commercial pretzel bakery. Because of the close trade ties between Philadelphia and the areas in and around Pennsylvania Dutch Country, it was only natural for pretzels to seep into the city’s cuisine. As cart vendors saw the potential of the salty treat, pretzels became a favorite of Philadelphians, who incidentally like them soft, chewy, and often topped with a simple yellow mustard.

Today, most of Philadelphia’s soft pretzels aren’t made in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, they’re made right here in the city. Some of the better-known factories include the Federal Pretzel Baking Company at 638 Federal Street, the Philadelphia Soft Pretzel Factory at various locations around the city, and the Center City Pretzel at 816 Washington Avenue. Vendors sell the popular treat at local fresh markets, from plain brown paper bags on the streets during rush hour and — most visibly — from the once-gleaming metal food trucks that line city streets. With pretzel vendors on every corner, one thing’s for sure: you never have to go far for a tasty treat in Philadelphia.
