In 1998, Dan and his ESU college roommate Len Lehman ’94 opened the first Philly Pretzel Factory in Northeast Philadelphia and created the world’s largest Philly-style pretzel bakery. In 2004 they founded Soft Pretzel Franchise Systems, Inc. with over 150 locations. In 2012, Dan appeared on the reality series Undercover Boss.

He missed pretzels when he went to school, so after he graduated, Dan teamed up with his college friend Len Lehman to start the original Philly Pretzel Factory in Philadelphia’s Mayfair neighborhood. Dan and Len were inspired by their love of pretzels and their experiences at the original Philadelphia pretzel bakeries, so it was no surprise that their own pretzels were delicious! They had great respect for the Founding Fathers, whose warehouse bakeries in and around Philadelphia kept locals fed at all hours of the day. So opening their first Philly Pretzel Factory as a real storefront rather than in an industrial building was an experiment, a sort of why not try between the two. The result was a line that never waned and a fan base that was always hungry for more! Now, after more than twenty years of twisting, the Philly Pretzel Factory is 145+ stores strong and making things better as we grow into more states each year.
Our original storefront at 7366 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia was the only thing we could afford at the time, and it transformed our “factory” model into a retail outlet that still serves hot, delicious pretzels seven days a week. Who knew this was the start of Where Better Things Are Made?
We took a rental truck from Philly to Florida to buy original pretzel gear from retired pretzel makers. We’ve made improvements over time and today we custom build all of our equipment to our specifications for every Philly Pretzel Factory in the United States.
