Elodie Blomfield booked her first-ever screen role as Phoebe in the award-winning Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso alongside a cast that includes Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple, in which she has appeared as a character in both previously released series. Elodie also has stage experience, appearing in local theater productions as Mollie in Annie and Amanda Thripp in Matilda. We chatted with Elodie about playing Phoebe in Ted Lasso, returning to the set for series two, and appearing on stage.
You are currently starring in the role of Phoebe in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, what does she like to play and can you tell us a bit about her?
To me, Phoebe is very smart and quite wise, but maybe seems a bit young for her age at times. She is by nature a very happy girl who adores and looks up to her uncle even though they are the complete opposite!
I think that’s what makes their relationship so interesting and also why I love playing this role.
Do you remember how you felt when you booked the role and how did you prepare for your first day on set?
Getting that role was the best feeling. It was my very first job which made it even more amazing. At the time, I didn’t know how big the show or Phoebe’s role was going to be, so I’m still very excited about it all.
On my first day I wasn’t sure what to expect but I wanted to know exactly what to do so I made sure I knew my scenes really well.
What was your favorite episode or scene to film?
Definitely the Christmas episode. I had to be there all week (and eat loads of candy canes!!) and loved the feeling that this was actually my job. That’s when I decided I really wanted to be an actress when I was older.
All of my scenes were so much fun and I loved having my own plot. My favorite scene from filming was when Roy and Keeley are on the sofa trying to figure out what’s wrong with me and they smell my breath.

What’s it like working with the rest of the cast, which includes Brett Goldstein as your uncle?
Everyone is super nice and it’s like a big family there. Brett and Juno (Temple) are just the best and make me feel so grown up and like I’m one of them.
What was it like seeing the viewers’ reaction to the show and winning numerous awards?
I still can not believe it. I don’t know how to put it into words to be honest. I feel so incredibly lucky to be a part of this show.
How did it feel going back to Film Series 2 and reprising your role as Phoebe?
Knowing the writers believed in me and wanted Phoebe back was the best feeling. It felt like going back and seeing old friends again. i love it there
What do you think you’ve learned from working on the series so far?
Brett and Juno taught me so much. They’re really natural actors and they help me trust my instincts and know that when I get there, I’ll just be Phoebe. Everything doesn’t have to be perfect.

Is there something you enjoy most about being a part of Ted Lasso?
I like everything! It really is a dream job. If I had to choose, it would be how much I learn while I’m there.
You’ve also performed on stage, what do you enjoy about the theater work and can you tell about some you’ve been involved with?
I love the feeling of being in front of an audience. You just can’t beat it.
In local productions I’ve had the good fortune to play Mollie in Annie and Amanda Thripp in Matilda. Those were awesome experiences. My dream now is to be on a West End show one day.
Can you tell us something about your education?
I have always attended local drama/musical theater schools and until recently had private LAMDA lessons.
I also had a lot of online lessons during the lockdown.
Have you always enjoyed acting and how did you get into it?
Always.
I loved taking acting classes when I was about four years old and not long after that I started asking my mother if I could act on TV. I wasn’t sure how it worked…I even tried jumping in once!!!

Do you have any favorite series or movies that you want to watch?
I love Strictly Come Dancing and would love to be a part of it one day. The Harry Potter films are brilliant and of course Ted Lasso!
What is your favorite way to spend your time away from acting?
As a family we go camping a lot and love to be outside. I’ve also enjoyed rock climbing and gymnastics since I was three years old.
What are your hopes for your career in 2022?
I would love to be in a movie! I’m really into crime/scary books so something along those lines would be really cool!

I have the wonderful opportunity to introduce our guests today, Elodie Blomfield, you know them as Roy Kent’s niece Phoebe and Ted Lasso. We watched her grow as an actress, starting with a one-off appearance on Ted Lasso and doing so well that some of the most memorable moments of season two were built entirely around her and Brett Goldstein. We connected with Elodie’s mom, Rachel, on Instagram, and we’re glad she agreed to let us talk to Elodie for a little bit today. For those of you who aren’t through Season 2 yet, this is your official spoiler alert. There will be some discussion about Season 2.

We look forward to getting to know you too. So I’m guessing before you get to the title you don’t watch a lot of TV shows like Ted Lasso because it’s an adult show. So before the show came along, what were some of the things you enjoyed watching on TV, some of your favorite shows?
Elodie Blomfield
I like watching a show called Strictly Dancing. But I think it’s called Dancing with the Stars over there. Oh yeah.
Marisa
This is also one of my favorites.
Elodie Blomfield
I didn’t really have a favorite though, I like watching comedy shows on Netflix like Sam and Cat.
Christian
Yes. Comedy shows named after several children are very popular in my house. I think you should tell everyone you know that you want to be on Dancing with the Stars, because now that you’re on TV, maybe you can get on as a special contestant or something.
Elodie Blomfield
I think when I first watched I really wanted to be there. And then when I realized you must be famous. I thought, I think acting will be the way I get there. Hopefully,

just as our daughter thinks she will be on Dancing with the Stars or she wants to show the masked singer that she wants to be famous so she can be on the masked singer.

It’s a pretty good show too. Elodie, the first few times you were on set, how did it compare to what you envisioned?
Elodie Blomfield
It was very, very different, I didn’t think there would be that many takes, I thought it was just a few takes from a few different angles. Not that many angles as they don’t stop and start and only film one person. I also didn’t think I would get so much time to talk to the other actors and actresses. I thought they were just filming videos or the scene. Then they give us a few tips, film the scene again. Don’t even know how did you pause so I could talk to real Brett? Because I was with them most of the time? And yes, I really need to move them.
Christian
You probably figured there wouldn’t be as many takes because you knew your lines. So good. Brett Goldstein recently interviewed someone here in the United States, a famous author named Brene Brown, and he said that you were very well prepared with your writing and super professional. So who helps you practice at home? And how do your mom or dad’s Brett and Juno imitations hold up as you found them?
Elodie Blomfield
Well, my mom usually practices my lines with me. She does not imitate any of their voices. But then when my father rarely does it, usually when my mother is too tired to practice it with me. My father does it to me. And he usually imitates them, which I don’t think is so bad.
Marisa
My board looks pretty good to Roy, or at least he likes to think so.
Christian
Besides talking to people, what else did you do between takes, did you have homework to do? Or did you have other duties for the show?
Elodie Blomfield
I had to do my work there for the Christmas episode. Because I filmed all week and couldn’t go to school. Although I was isolated during that time. Well, because of the lockdown. Not really isolating. But I had to do homework there. So makes sense? Yes. do it there We did it because I didn’t even want to go in the scope. Then. Does this make sense? Or do I use me and you

It makes total sense.
Elodie Blomfield
And yes, I did it there. I had to do that between takes that I had my double there? Because yes. And we had fun. I can’t remember exactly how much work I got most of it.
Christian
What’s your double doing? Because you know you didn’t do any death-defying stunts. So what is the role of Elodie’s double?
Elodie Blomfield
It wasn’t a stunt double. At first I was a bit annoyed because I thought I didn’t want to stunt a double. I want to do all the stunts I want to do on the chase, that would be really fun. But then again, it wasn’t a stunt double. I didn’t have to climb stairs or swing from the Christmas tree. And normally we wouldn’t be filmed with all the people at the same time. So I think they got them testing the scenes they did because I was down when I went down that I would be down there for so long. So I filmed the scenes. I had some work to do and I’m a kid so they made her try out the scenes and things and we were more alike than we should be. No, not even joking. We are not so similar in licking, but also in personality. I think we’re long lists of twins. Left-handed and it’s pretty rare to get tempted. We both amela under macaroni cheese. We both wear glasses for the same reason

To see better? That’s why I wear glasses
Elodie Blomfield
Well, because one is weaker than the other and I wear glasses, I build it up. And we both got the exact same week that I got the left one. So it’s pretty cool.

Wow, we need to make a film about you and your long lost twins.

Speaking of similarities and differences, what do you envision for Phoebe or perceive the character to be different from the actress?
Elodie Blomfield
I think we’re all pretty much alike because I’ve grown to like Ted Lasso more and more. But I still think we’re quite different. Because she’s two years younger than me and sees acting with me. Although the way she speaks and the word she uses is not really the way she speaks. But the words she uses say they’re really grown up and half of them. I don’t know human golf. I learned so many words from TV.
Christian
How do you explain to your friends what the show is like because it’s not really a show meant for kids your age or Phoebe’s age? So how do you explain to them why you’re doing this when you’re away or when you’re on TV?
Elodie Blomfield
Usually just tell them it’s an adult show about football. It’s a comedy on Apple TV. You should check it out because it’s not very appropriate. And there’s a lot in it. And her parents should watch it on Apple TV because it’s a very good show. And when I tell them that I’ve had to swear a lot, most people’s first question is: Do I have to swear? I say I don’t have to swear. But I have a scene where I get rejected.
Marisa
I heard Brett Goldstein has a potty mouth like his character, Roy did he have to wash his mouth when he was around you?
Elodie Blomfield
Yes. He doesn’t swear as much as Roy. But he does. I think when I first heard him swearing I was a bit shocked because I didn’t think he would swear in front of me. I wasn’t sure if he was actually swearing, I didn’t think he would swear around me. I didn’t realize how much he swears when I’m not around.

That means he’s doing a good job. He doesn’t have to put any money in the scold jar. Help him save. What did you learn about acting around Juno and Brett since they are older, more experienced actors than you?
Elodie Blomfield
Oh, I’ve learned that you don’t always have to get your lines perfect. But that is one of the four questions. I thought you had to get all your lights perfect. I thought there would be quite a bit of pressure. But working with Juno and Brett Rexy finds that there aren’t any, because even they make mistakes. Once in a while. It makes me feel a little more relaxed when I make mistakes. You really helped.

Speaking of the amazing acting jobs Brad Goldstein and Juno Temple do in scenes with your character. There’s that scene from the Christmas episode where Roy smells your breath, which might be one of the funniest moments of the entire season. How did you protect yourself from character shattering there? And are there any other scenes where it was really difficult not to laugh with your co-stars during filming?
Elodie Blomfield
I think that’s the Christmas episode where he freezes. I didn’t really find it funny, but I didn’t really get the joke. My mother kept asking me about it. Why didn’t you laugh in that scene? Just thought maybe it’s just an adult finding this so hard to read. Right for her. Because there was a scene in the color eating ice cream. Roy Spitz’s ice cream at one point. Once he held it in his hand. And he actually admitted it. Upside down. The ice one

In real life? Like favorite ice cream? Do you see the chocolate or cookie dough? There are two escape routes, and they are both. Even better.

I don’t think I’ve heard of it.

But it’s an Australian show and our kids love trying out Australian accents. Do you? Ever try out any accents?
Elodie Blomfield
I sometimes do American accent for selfies. I don’t think I’ve ever had to speak an Australian accent. Although sometimes I just practice it randomly

How has auditioning changed for you? Because for a while everything was online and everything was video. Now how was it having some in-person auditions now that the pandemic is getting better?
I don’t think I’ve had any first and passed auditions. But recently I personally went for seven rounds. But normally in the pandemic they would be on Zoom. It was really nice to meet people in person. And it’s helpful because sometimes on Zoom I don’t really know how to talk to them. Because I can’t really move in space, can I? I just have to yeah, tada. When zooming. We met in person, you can move. Unless it’s a really tight space. There is usually still a tight group. Yes.
Marisa
What are your hobbies Elodie? When you’re not playing Phoebe? When you don’t do schoolwork? What would a normal day look like for you?
Elodie Blomfield
Well, I do gymnastics twice a week. So I really like doing gymnastics, so not a day goes by without it. Sometimes I just do it without even realizing it, just by myself when I’m making wagon wheels and forest buns. And then we have a little pull-up bar, just in comparison between a doorway. And I like to spin around it. I also like climbing.

Oh, that’s fun, like rock climbing.

Yes. I recently joined the climbing club. However, I have only had one session so far. So I don’t know if I can count.

I saw your mom posted about this climbing club. And that wall looked huge. Do you know how high the wall you climbed was?
Elodie Blomfield
I do not know. But I know it was really big.

I was impressed you weren’t on the kids wall. You are on the realistic full-size rock face. So kudos to you for taking it on.
Elodie Blomfield
Many Thanks. I think you got it from my brother even though he’s younger than me. I still think you would get it from him because he claims everything he can see.

So we had a question here about what you enjoy doing that you haven’t had a chance to do on the show as your character Phoebe. So it sounds like we need to have a scene where Roy and Keeley take Phoebe rock climbing. That sounds like an excellent scene. Authors, if you’re listening, we’re officially filing a climb.

That’s a good idea. All writers are listening, I’m sure.

I won’t see another scene either. But one place I want to go is the stadium and I really went to work to play and go to the dressing rooms and see Rebecca’s office. I also really want to try Ted’s cookies that he makes. I’m really jealous because apparently they sell them over there in America.
Well, word on the street is that in the first season the cookies, which I think, as you would say, are rubbish, they weren’t very good at all. And so for season two they improved the prop cookie recipe and they were actually delicious and a lot of people in the states who are fans of the show will try their hand at making cookies and use them for special occasions or make are mostly butter and sugar, so they’re amazing.

You’re kind of in a Disney vibe right now. Because you have informed us that you have to go to a stage production of The Lion King and you are preparing to attend a stage production of Frozen. So it doesn’t have to be a Disney play or a musical. But do you have any plays or musicals that you would like to act in? Someday?

I’d like to be in Mathilda in the West End.

That’s a good goal.

Yes. Although I think I’ll be a little big for Matilda.

You’ve recently done stage work and a local production of Matilda, what was fun about it?

All. I love theater work. Because you just get that magical feeling. Because you can see that everyone is watching you and having fun. And it’s really different than television. At first you might be a bit nervous when you go on stage, then you start to remember all your lines and you just forget that nervousness. And then you feel really excited, or it’s super fun.

Or the beauty is that there is no shortage of West End actors and actresses on the set of Ted Lasso. Obviously Hannah Waddingham is a big West End star. Hopefully she can give you some tips on how to calm those nerves and get more roles in the West End. We’d love to see you up there one day.

I think I would ask her how she manages her nerves. like you said that But because it was just a small company. I didn’t feel that much pressure. Because it’s all a stand. I believe perfection is expected of you. Because people pay quite a bit of money to watch.

Yes.

Ipswich city. But we can still be friends.
Christian
I think this will be a wonderful act of diplomacy. Our listeners know that I’ve mentioned before on our show that I’m a Norwich fan. And their rival is indeed Ipswich. And that technically puts Elodie and I on opposite sides of the football rivalry, but hopefully we’ll meet in the middle, as an example for everyone else. And maybe I don’t know that someday you’re going to win a peace prize or something.

Probably a veterinarian because I really like animals, like Phoebe. Except I don’t think I want to do it in the wild, I prefer to just go to a vet clinic and help them and know what I’m dealing with. See, I want to help pets recover at home because I’m not allowed to pet them in my own home. And if I were around I could be with animals all day long. That would be nice.

Well I found one recently. And I have fun when one comes, but I don’t think I can talk about it yet.

That’s okay, secrets are good. And that’s one thing that the cast and crew of Ted Lasso have done a really good job at, which is keeping secrets on this show, and it’s been fun for us to watch, and so I think it’s very nice of Yours is to maintain that confidentiality as best you can, but we’ll keep our eyes open.

Yes, and when we’re likely to see your co-stars’ new shows and your peers, we’ll share the work you’re doing, we’ll be sure to spread it for fans to see you on other shows and other projects.
