What I’ve Learned Garland Favorito, election integrity activist

When it comes to keeping the electoral process in Georgia honest, Garland Favorito is one of the harshest advocates and critics.

Favorito has rattled the nerves of many of Georgia’s political elites for 15 years as he challenges the state’s electoral system.

The retired IT professional is the co-founder of VoterGA, a nonpartisan election integrity nonprofit with thousands of social media followers. Politically he is independent.

The Atlanta Civic Circle has met with the Roswell resident who is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the authenticity of 147,000 mail-in ballots cast in Fulton County during last year’s presidential election.

Here’s what Favorito had to say. This transcript has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Q. You are one of the people who filed a lawsuit to have the voting cards checked. Why?

A. Well, yes. inspected. It’s not a full exam. There was evidence of possible forged ballot papers. We want to review these to see if the evidence and affidavits are… indeed accurate.

Q. Where did the evidence come from? did someone tell you Did you really see it?

A. There are four affidavits from Fulton County Election Commissioners who claim to have handled counterfeit ballots during the November 14th and 15th audit.

Q. How many have you edited or actually seen?

A. We couldn’t say how many there were because examiners weren’t allowed to get closer than six feet to a table to see the fake ballots. What they described was that there were absentee ballots that had not been folded before mailing. They were not marked with a pen but with a machine and have a different paper stock. And they were marked (were marked) in the same way as all down ballot races.

Q. What does this mean for you?

A. That there are potentially fake ballots. You are not real.

Q. A Henry County judge hearing the case said this week he would need more time to review the evidence. What do you mean by the hearing on Monday?

A. Yes, there are many complicated movements. He’ll need time to sort all this out.

Q. Do you expect his decision to come this week?

A. I don’t think so. It will probably take a week or two.

Q. You are one of nine people who have filed a lawsuit in this case. What is the lawsuit claiming?

A. Fake ballots are alleged to be included in the count. That’s why someone gave them an injection. We want to prevent that.

Q. The lawsuit also alleges that it violated your constitutional rights. As?

A. If someone inserts fake ballots into the count, it will dilute your vote. So it’s a breach of equal protection and it’s also a breach of due process. It’s illegal.

Q. How does this affect our democracy?

A. Someone inserted fake ballots into the count. It undermines democracy.

Q. Georgia is not the only state that participates in elections. Tensions are currently raging in Arizona over the ballot recount, and there are various other cases across the country. What does that tell you on a broader macro scale?

A. I’m glad there are concerns. People want to make sure the votes are counted correctly. So that’s good. But we don’t know until we see the results. We don’t know now what it really is.

Q. How did your organization, VoterGA, get started?

A. We were formed about 15 years ago to take legal action against the old electronic voting machines. We believe they were unconstitutional because you could not verify, verify, or retell the findings. They were very corrupt machines. They should never have been bought in Georgia. They were purchased in 2002. They were only decommissioned in 2019.

Q. What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your years as an electoral integrity activist?

A. What I’ve learned is that the corruption is deeper than I ever imagined.

Q. Tell me a little bit more about it. Are you saying that corruption is bipartisan? Or is it one party above the other? Or is it just built into the system?

A. That’s a great point. You have the Democrats in Fulton County and the Republicans in the Secretary of State’s office, and you can’t trust either of them. Yes, this is definitely bipartisan corruption.

Q. Your organization is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. So you’re not necessarily looking at a specific page or sliding one page over the other. It sounds like your interest lies in the truth or the integrity of the process.

A. We’ve been on both sides of the spectrum. Last time we helped the progressives. This time the former President seems to have been betrayed. But we’ve spent years helping progressives because they thought they were being duped by the Republican establishment. Yes, it was really on both sides. Election integrity must be truly impartial.

Q. What has surprised you most in your years as an election integrity activist?

A. The depth of corruption.

Q. Politicians and the media have repeatedly said that there is no real evidence of fraud in connection with last year’s elections. Does that scare you when you hear that?

A. Yes, because I know they are lying.

Q. Do you think your 15 years as an electoral integrity activist have paid off?

A. Yes, I think so because it’s really come together over the past few years. It has really peaked in recent years. I think the last few years have made the first 10 or 12 years worthwhile. For many years we felt that people were not listening to us. We had the evidence and the facts, but people weren’t listening. Now people are starting to listen, and they’re realizing that the news media wasn’t telling us the truth. And the Secretary of State’s office didn’t tell us the truth. People are now waking up and understanding. They want electoral integrity, and they want electoral transparency like they’ve never wanted it before.

Posts misrepresent impact of missing ballot images in Georgia

CLAIM: The inability of some Georgia counties to produce the original electronic ballot images from the 2020 election indicates voter fraud occurred. Now the state has no way of verifying that the ballots are legitimate reflections of what went through the machines.

AP RATING: Lack of context. It is true that some Georgia counties have violated state law by failing to retain electronic images from the original count of ballots from the 2020 election, but this does not prove fraud or affect the election result. According to the Secretary of State, Georgia counties still have all of the ballots cast in the election. Georgia presidential race results were counted three times, and all three results showed Democrat Joe Biden defeating Republican incumbent Donald Trump.

THE FACTS: Social media users are igniting unsubstantiated claims about interference in Georgia’s 2020 election after a longtime critic of Georgia’s electoral system pointed out that some of the state’s counties could not produce electronic ballot images from those elections.

The electronic images are generated automatically when ballots are scanned and tabulated. They are considered election documents and, according to state law, must be kept for two years after an election.

Garland Favorito, the leader of a group called VoterGA and a longtime critic of Georgia’s electoral administration, said Tuesday that his group had sent open record requests to all 159 counties in the state to request the electronic ballot images from the Nov. 3, 2020 election . A sweeping new electoral law enacted this year made the ballot images publicly available.

“We want to check the numbers. We want to verify that everything was correct as reported,” said Favorito.

Favorito said election officials in about a third of the state’s counties are unable to provide full sets of electronic ballot images in response to his group’s requests for open records. Some said they didn’t have any of the original images, while others only had some. He said six others claimed to have sent recordings that his group has yet to receive, and a dozen counties have not responded to requests or are charging exorbitant fees for the recordings to be made. He said on Friday he stands by those numbers.

The Associated Press ran random checks against lists of counties that Favorito said produced no, or only some, ballot images. While some counties disputed Favorito’s claims and said they did in fact retain the original ballot images, others acknowledged they were missing some or all images, including Fulton and Cobb County, two of the state’s most populous counties.

Several conservative commentators and politicians seized on the revelation that some counties in Georgia were unable to produce ballot images. A statement from Trump’s Save America PAC on Tuesday said: “Wow look what was just found in Georgia. Why isn’t Gov. Brian Kemp doing anything about the large-scale voter fraud? Where’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger? The people of Georgia get it!”

Another widely shared post on Twitter repeated the cheating allegations, expanding them to falsely claim that “ALL personal ballot pictures are missing from GA.”

Technically, without the original ballot images, a district would not have accurate image files that match the ballots that went through the ballot machines during the initial count. However, this does not mean that the election results are not verifiable.

According to Gabriel Sterling, a top official in the Secretary of State’s office, Georgia counties have retained their paper ballots in accordance with state and federal laws. These paper ballots are the official record of how Georgia residents voted and could theoretically be recounted if necessary.

“You have all actual ballots that have been counted three times,” Sterling said in a tweet on Tuesday.

The results of the 2020 presidential election were counted three times in Georgia. First, when the paper ballots were scanned and tabulated immediately after the election. Next, all paper ballots were hand-counted to meet a new audit requirement in state law. Finally, at the request of Trump’s campaign, the ballots were rescanned and counted. All three balance sheets showed that Democrat Joe Biden prevailed against Trump.

“There is no doubt that three ballot counts produced conclusive results as to who won the Georgia election,” Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in a statement to the AP. “Wishful thinking by conspiracy theorists cannot change the outcome of whatever intangible technicality they allegedly identified this week.”
