When I first started toying with the idea of starting MEET ITALY over two years ago, I had a meeting with Jeff Capaccio, the founder of SVIEC, our strategic partner in Northern California. Speaking about the MEET ITALY concept, Jeff told me that in his experience there will be many reasons for doing so, and lots of good feedback from such an endeavor, but likely it would result in meeting great people and making meaningful and lasting friendships closing is the better reward.
Meeting Gary Vitti was such an experience. Gary was introduced to MEET ITALY by a mutual friend and the journey began over a year ago with lunch on sunny Manhattan Beach.
Gary was the LA Lakers’ head athletic coach for 32 years from 1984 to 2016. This unique professional background makes Conversations with Gary a never-ending journey into the land of life inspiration.
Sport and its inspirational connotations are a powerful cocktail for insightful discussions about what past experiences teach us about ourselves and how they can guide us into the future. Gary has an innate ability to make you feel good while still motivating you to do even better. It’s not just the locker room stories and pathos of telling great battles fought on the courts of the NBA, nor the exposure of the human aspect of athletes that we might have adored in our younger days. It really is because of Gary. His sincere outlook on life is the secret ingredient of his success and sympathy.
Since retiring, Gary has worked to put his Lakers stories and his teachings on living a healthy and fulfilling life on paper. These writings are now a reality. Gary recently published his manuscript, 32 Years of Trophies and Tears from the Best Seat in the House: What I Learned About Happiness, Greatness, Leadership and the Evolution of Sports Science.
He recently gave me a copy which I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I can’t wait to eventually pass it on to my daughter who is growing up to be a great athlete.

During his tenure, the team won 14 division titles, 12 conference titles, and 8 NBA championships. Vitti also represented the Western Conference in 4 All-Star games. He has worked alongside Basketball Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Shaquille O’Neal, Jamaal Wilkes, Bob McAdoo, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Mitch Richmond, Dennis Rodman, Bill Sharman and Jerry West worked, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson and future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant. Vitti was also the Head Athletic Coach for the Los Angeles Strings of World Team Tennis from 1984 to 1992. His teams and exhibition games have included tennis greats Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova, Billy Jean King and Chrissy Everett, among others.
In addition to his professional experience, Vitti gives lectures internationally.
