I’ve escaped from two kindergartens three times and solidified an indestructible sense of being special. Even as a small child I painted and drew. In 1963 I went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Poland to study painting. Unfortunately, it was believed that any sort of veracity in painting had vanished due to the invention of photography (as if the invention of television could have killed literature), so the only instruction available was to drip paint, smudge merrily and to close the ranks obligatory modernity. At that time I had just arrived at the conviction, central to my art, that modern art is a worthless, hopeless barbarism invented by amateurs intent on obtaining the cheapest uniqueness. Horrified at my opponent’s size and build, I was allowed to work alone in my dorm room for the remaining five

In one of his poems, Salvatore Quasimodo called the night of my birth – January 18, 1944 – the darkest night of the war. The little town I was born in was in the bloody hands of the Nazis, then the hands of the Russians. Stalin’s murderous gaze declared that our city would never again become a part of Poland. Providence approved of Stalin, and we had to relocate to settle in Upper Silesia, a cluster of coal mines, steel mills, and other heavy industries that churned out unrestrainedly acrid, fetid puffs of smoke. Greasy soot covered every blade of grass. My father was a watchmaker and jeweler. My mother took care of three children.

Horrified by my opponent’s size and stature, I was allowed to work alone in my dorm room for the remaining five years, groping and groping my way through Western culture’s glorious past like a burrowing warthog, nervous and unlikable.

In 1969 I became a professional artist and I painted hundreds of paintings, organized many solo exhibitions and participated in international exhibitions all over the art collecting world. In 1975 I came to New York and was granted political asylum. I realized that the contact sport of an artist’s career required a 24-hour dedication to bringing joy to the softer parts of Manhattan. I couldn’t do it. I’m too arrogant to swallow all the cheese cubes, lift the mountain of greeting cards, dip my tongue in honey, and lick my transition to importance.

The following year I lived and painted on a remote farm in West Virginia. Those eight years were a time of Dionysian joy. I painted, tended a garden and observed nature very closely. It was the most unbridled days imaginable. Each day stood ready like a portal of existence to answer the question of what is worth doing in this lofty cathedral of freedom. I have lived in Hillsborough, North Carolina for about 35 years, dividing my time and attention between painting and engraving.
