A teenage driver died Friday after his vehicle collided with a traffic signal pole in Wheaton, police said.
Holden Wight, a junior at Wheaton Warrenville South High School, died in a one-car wreck on Butterfield and Orchard roads, Principal Scott McDermott said in a message to families Saturday morning.
“Our hearts and prayers are with Holden’s family and friends,” McDermott wrote. “The loss of a member of our school community is incredibly tragic, sad and very difficult to comprehend.”
The 16-year-old was the only occupant of the car, which hit a traffic pole at the southeast corner of the T-shaped intersection just before 5 p.m. Friday, police said. Police did not identify the driver.
A stretch of Butterfield Road was closed for nearly five hours as authorities investigated the collapse. No other vehicles were involved.
The high school student services team will be available on campus from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday for classmates and staff who are grieving, McDermott said.
“Mental health awareness and support is an important topic in the Wight family and in our school community in Wheaton Warrenville South,” McDermott said.
The principal admitted “the processing of this tragedy will definitely take some time.”
“Our school community has gone through a lot in recent years and we are a stronger and closer school community as a result,” McDermott said. “Now is the time for us to continue to come together to support our entire Tiger Nation and our team is committed to doing just that.”

Shortly before 5 p.m., Wheaton police responded to Butterfield Rd. at Orchard Rd. for a collision of a vehicle in which the driver hits a traffic signal pole.
The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle and was identified by his school as 16-year-old Holden Wight, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We express our condolences to the family, friends and school community affected by this loss. The Wheaton Police Department has reached out to Community Unit School District 200 staff so they can provide resources of support for the District community. 200, ”Wheaton police said.
