Oregon father of four who told President Biden ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ on Christmas Eve call said he meant it in jest
Update: Jared Schmeck said Monday he was proud of speaking to President Joe Biden. Schmeck made the new remarks on former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon’s show War Room, where he wore a “Make America Great Again” hat and struck a defiant tone. Read the latest.
A Central Point father-of-four, who wished President Joe Biden and the First Lady a Merry Christmas and added “Let’s go, Brandon” at the end of a live-streamed Santa Tracker call, told The Oregonian/OregonLive that he farewell did not intend message to be vulgar.
“Ultimately, I have nothing against Mr. Biden, but I’m frustrated because I think he can do a better job,” said Jared Schmeck, 35, who works for an electric company and was previously a Medford police officer for six years until he resigned in July 2018. “I don’t mean disrespect to him.”
The phrase “Let’s Go, Brandon” has become a conservative jab at the Democratic president, code for “F — Joe Biden,” resulting from an Oct. 2 NASCAR race in Alabama that saw a crowd of the vulgar chanting, but a television reporter during an interview with winning driver Brandon Brown hinted that the crowd was actually chanting “Let’s go, Brandon.” Brown had just won his first NASCAR Xfinity Series race.
Schmeck said he wasn’t a “Trumper,” but described himself as a “free-thinking American and follower of Jesus Christ.”
Schmeck said he and his family call the NORAD Santa Tracker every Christmas Eve. He said he wasn’t aware the call was being streamed live.
When he called from his sons’ Christmas-themed bedroom on Friday night, he was told First Lady Jill Biden would be taking calls.
“I thought it was automated. We just waited on hold and then they answered,” he said. “And I was like, ‘Wow, that’s real.'”
When Jared shared the names of his children, President Biden immediately took to the boy named Hunter and shared that they also have a son and grandson named Hunter.
Jared’s 11-year-old Griffin told the President he wanted a piano for Christmas. His son Hunter said he wanted a Switch.
“Switch?” asked Biden.
Schmeck knelt between his sons’ beds and held up his cellphone for all to hear, telling the president that it’s short for Ninetendo Switch. Schmeck also shared that his daughter Piper wanted a Barbie doll airplane and his 2-year-old daughter Penelope would be happy to receive presents from Santa. Schmeck asked for a “quiet night”. The President replied, “Good luck, Dad,” and everyone laughed.
Biden told all kids to go to bed by 9 p.m. and sleep until midnight or Santa will not come.
“Well, Merry Christmas. I wish you a wonderful Christmas,” said the First Lady.
“I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas too,” Schmeck replied, adding, “Merry Christmas and Let’s Go Brandon!”
The first lady flinched and the president immediately replied, “Let’s go Brandon, I agree.”
Then President Biden tried to find out if Jared was calling from Oregon.
“By the way, you’re in Oregon? Where is your home?” asked the President. Without an answer, Biden said, “I think we lost him,” and moved on.
Until then, however, Schmeck was in the mood. He said he didn’t hang up on the president, but he’s separated.
Shortly after, Schmeck’s wife posted on Instagram, “My husband may have just said to Joe and Jill Biden on the phone, ‘Let’s go Brandon,'” punctuated by two crying emojis. Schmeck also posted a video of her conversation with Biden and the First Lady on his YouTube channel, writing, “We spoke to President Joe Biden on Christmas Eve! #letsgobrandon”
From Christmas Eve through Christmas, Schmeck’s parting word to Biden sparked anger on social media.
US Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-CA, wrote on Twitter: “I refuse to believe that we as humans are so lewd. Not on Christmas Eve. And not to someone who lost his wife and daughter at Christmas time. We’re better than that. Be nice and #Merry Christmas.”
Another wrote on Twitter: “Imagine you are a grown man so infantile and disrespectful that you insult the President in front of your own children and dozens of others: ‘Let’s Go Brandon.’ This is a sad time.”
Others berated his remark. One person wrote on Twitter: “Some of us celebrate Christmas Eve in gratitude for the birth of Jesus, others shout profanity to entertain our son and the @YouTube audience.”
“Wow. #jaredschmeck is going to be trending for the first time in his life and not in a good way,” wrote another on the social media site.
Schmeck called his remark a “joke” and a reflection of his frustration with Biden’s policies, including federal vaccination requirements, inflation and global supply chain issues that have caused shortages in consumer goods.
“And now I’m being attacked for using my freedom of expression,” Schmeck said, adding that he’s received a number of vague but threatening calls since Santa’s tracker call.
“I understand that ‘let’s go Brandon’ has a vulgar meaning, but I’m not that stupid no matter how I feel about him,” the 35-year-old father said on Christmas morning. “He seems like a warm guy. There is no hostilities or anything like that. It was just an innocent joke to also express my God-given right to express my frustrations in a joking manner… I love him the same way I love any other brother or sister.”
When asked why he resigned from the Medford Police Department on July 15, 2018, Schmeck said nothing.
He went on to say he stands “100% behind” what he did and what he said.
