Reinagel’s redemption story

This is a carousel. Use the Next and Previous buttons to navigate

Joe Reinagel reached the peak of his career a dozen years ago when KENS 5 hired him to replace retired athletic director and legendary journalist Dan Cook.

Billboards and TV spots promoted the elegant anchor with coiffed hair and a lively presentation.

He was the new face of the sport for the market’s top news show.

But as his ego swelled, his 18-year marriage was dying.

Reinagel said his first wife was fed up with his long hours away, late nights in bars and marital infidelity. At the local airport, about to fly to a Spurs playoff game, he was showered with divorce papers.

“At the time I thought I was God,” says Reinagel, 50. “I wanted to do what makes me happy and joyful, and if I have to serve God then I have to be responsible for something, and I didn’t want that . It might take me away from the bar and have a good time.”

It wasn’t until a reluctant attendance at a local church began seven years ago that the party lifestyle began to fade.

In his second marriage, he rebuilt trust. He became a family man, churchgoer, and inspirational speaker for Christian men’s events. Next weekend he will be hosting the Men of Light conference in Tri-Point.

The conference theme resonates with him: “Healing from life’s scars”.

He still stumbles, he says, including a high-profile arrest for public intoxication five years ago. He issued an on-air apology and later served his deferred sentence. Then as now, he said, he draws on an ever deeper foundation of faith.

“I’m so far from perfect, it’s incredible,” he said. “I would never pretend I am or that I have all the answers, but I know who does, and as long as I remain faithful to God, I know He has the answers.”

breakthrough

Reinagel grew up in Alice, a majority Catholic town west of Corpus Christi. His father took him to confession on Saturdays and to mass on Sundays. At the age of 10 he was an altar boy.

In high school, he played varsity sports and was captain of the golf team. In his sophomore year, he let go of the church.

Outgoing by nature, he attended parties. Beer was easy to get even though he was underage.

The habit escalated at Texas State University. There he earned a degree in business administration and met his first wife.

They started in Corpus Christi. Reinagel sold radios to farmers and ranchers. But he took advantage of his expense account, vehicle and lax oversight, he said.

“I really wasn’t doing my job,” he said. “I was so young and stupid. … I still had the mentality that I wanted to go out and party and chase women and things like that. So I was only faithful to my wife for a short time. She had to know what was going on.”

He worked odd jobs before moving to San Antonio for a fresh start. An uncle here trained him to be the manager of Mr. Gatti’s Pizza. And the couple attended Windcrest United Methodist Church. He even taught a Sunday School class for teenagers.

“What a joke. God help me, I hope I didn’t do any harm to these kids,” he said. “Looking back, I was playing church. I thought I was doing it right. I went to church and was for an hour a good boy, and then it went straight back out into the world and I did things that I probably shouldn’t do.”

A weekend gig for a radio station in New Braunfels opened the doors to his passion for broadcasting sports.

He was married to work. His stock went up. He soon owned the mic at KTSA and KTFM Radio in San Antonio. Then came KENS 5 in 1997.

Local broadcasting giants Cook, Chris Marrou and Albert Flores were now equals. When Cook retired a few years later, serious promotions began, culminating in his current position as athletic director.

“It’s a horrible thing to think about because right at the moment I’m really thriving, my first marriage broke up,” he said. “The house collapsed. Many things have been found out.”

overcome the past

After his divorce in 2001, his eldest daughter did not speak to him for a year.

A few years later he married his current wife, Joy. He adopted her three daughters and worked to recover.

Still, he led a nightlife and ignored his new wife’s pleas to go to church. It came to a head on a Sunday morning in 2004. Before entering Oak Hills Church, she parked her car at a neighboring gas station and called him.

“I prayed and prayed for him, but it got to the point where I couldn’t take it anymore,” she said. “I told him, ‘You can either come to church with me or I’m done with you. Do you want to lose your family for the rest of your life?’”

He gave in. Max Lucado, the well-known author and minister of the church, preached that morning.

“I can’t remember what his sermon was, but I just remember feeling a tingling sensation on the back of my neck,” Reinagel said. “I can not explain. I don’t know if it was cold there. But I remember going out that day and being a little different.”

A year later he and his family were baptized in Oak Hills. He is now a regular in the men’s community group.

He and his eldest daughter now get along well. He routinely does one daughter’s swim meetings and another’s cheerleading events. He lives for family time on weekends.

“Everyone fights. No exceptions. The difference between Joe and most people is this: Joe trusted and trusts that God’s grace will support and strengthen him,” Lucado said.

Between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. news programs, the Reinagel family eats dinner together at the dining table. They hold hands while he prays – even while eating. His once-roving eye is on her, Joy said, and he’s coming home when he promises.

“He knows he won’t let me down. It’s God,” she said. “I think he saw what it did to me and the girls and also to himself. His mind is different. His eyes are different.”

It’s noticeable at work, too, said Bill Taylor, chief meteorologist at KENS 5.

Taylor and Reinagel used to team up for late-night antics, they said. Their status as local celebrities earned them attention in bars. But both have renewed their Christian faith in recent years, even speaking about it together on the same stage at a men’s conference a few years ago.

“You get to a point in your life where you realize there’s more to life,” Taylor said. “Joe was never a bad guy. He was always funny and having a great time. But I really see a change in him over the course of his journey. TV and all that stuff really doesn’t have eternal meaning when we’re talking about God’s stuff.”

About 100 men arrived before dawn Thursday for the weekly men’s meeting at Oak Hills Church.

Reinagel came in wearing a ball cap, blue jeans and sneakers. He carried his Bible and a notepad. He made announcements for the program, recited a scripture and led them in prayer.

Afterward, the men divided into small groups around tables for open discussion and continued prayer.

“There’s nobody in this building who doesn’t have a colorful past,” said Jerry Bairrington, who was sitting at a table next to Reinagel. “The great thing about Joe is that he lives for Christ and lets him overcome the past.”

How to Live “Happily Ever After” by Joy Reinagel

Today’s guest blogger is Joy Reinagel. Joy is a spokeswoman and former deputy sheriff for Bexar County. With her husband Joe, she founded 1013 Ministries, a ministry that shares the Word of God through faith in Jesus Christ. She and Joe, the executive sports reporter for the CBS affiliate in San Antonio, Texas, share their story of redemption as a couple to encourage other married couples to put Christ at the center of their lives.

Sometimes our life becomes extremely busy when we wear the hats of wife, mother, worker, sister, daughter, whatever. Put simply, we are WOMEN!

We have such amazing fairy tale dreams as little girls, but nobody really prepares us for the BIG TIME called “LIFE”. We’re taught from a young age that you grow up to find Prince Charming, have that flowing white Cinderella princess dress with a fairytale wedding, kids, a dog, a house with a white picket fence, and live happily ever after. Well, someone forgot to tell us that weddings can be expensive, and as for Prince Charming, Jesus Christ is the only perfect man walking this earth. Jesus will always keep HIS promises. He is faithful and is with you wherever you go.

Having children can also create its challenges. We are not usually prepared for pregnancies with difficulties or unforeseen outcomes. We are absolutely not prepared for medical challenges. We can be absolutely sure that Jesus is with us through everything and gives us strength, courage and above all love.

A happy life until the end of life can become realistic through the POWER of PRAYER. Just ask Jesus Christ into your life!

When the storm throws you from side to side in life, you may feel so seasick that you fall to your knees. Some may exclaim, “Lord, enough! This is too much! Help me.” Your tears may stream down your face and your hands may be lifted up to the Lord in despair. He knows your bills are overdue, you have next to nothing to support your family with only $20 in your name, not to mention you need gas in your car.

Then suddenly peace comes over you.

You will remember that the Word says, “Be not anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, bring your request to God.” And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

And you realize that it will be okay because the real Prince Charming, the King of Kings will hold your hand and give you everything you need.

Peace be with you all!

Blessing,
