Towards the end of 2020, the Troy Lee Designs team made the big announcement that Justin Barcia would be joining the GASGAS Redbull team. A new team means a new bike and for Barcia it was the MC 450F. Before we dissect Barcia’s bike, let’s talk a little bit about GasGas.
Gas Gas is a Spanish motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1973 by Narcis Casass and Joseph Piebernat. Before selling their first GasGas bikes, the two started a chain of shops selling bikes and by 1985 they were making their own bikes. The name Gas Gas is what you think of as “to gas it” (accelerate, accelerate, accelerate), essentially to go faster. Fast forward to 2019 and Gas Gas is bought by Pierer Mobility Group, the parent company of KTM and Husqvarna.
Many have asked if GasGas is just a red-painted KTM. Here’s what we know: GASGAS bikes will have the same engine, steel frame, WP suspension components, electric start, hydraulic clutch and Brembo brakes. While they share some components and some differences, including forged aluminum triple clamps, the resonance chamber in KTM and Husky headers is gone, resulting in different engine characteristics.
Barcia has many nicknames, not including what supercross foes call him
Supercross racer Justin Barcia hasn’t won many friends on the track with his aggressive riding style. He is returning from injury to drive for Joe Gibbs in Saturday’s Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Dubbed “Frog” as a youth by his mother after he flew off a ski jump and landed in a frog pond, Supercross racer Justin Barcia has since earned the nicknames “Wild Child” and “Bam Bam” for his uncompromising style on the track.
“My driving style is very aggressive,” said Barcia. “That’s my style.”
So much so that the 22-year-old writes on Barcia’s website that his bad habit is knocking out his training partners.
“It’s true,” he said. “That’s probably why I don’t have any training partners right now.”
Barcia – who are set to take part in the Monster Energy Cup at 6pm. at Sam Boyd Stadium today – joked about not having practice partners, but he doesn’t actually have many friends, if any, among his fellow racers.
“They’re not big fans of mine, I don’t think, but that’s okay. That’s why it’s a race and a big competition,” he said. “I speak to a lot of racers, but when it comes to going to the track I don’t have any friends, that’s for sure.”
Barcia clashed at the track with former Supercross champion Ryan Dungey, who is also scheduled to compete in Las Vegas.
“A lot of drivers aren’t best friends, but there is a certain level of respect. There’s not a lot of respect for Barcia,” said Dungey. “He’s not afraid to throw you off track. If there were no races, we’d get along, but when you’re clipped on triple 30 feet in the air at 60 mph, that dirt isn’t going to feel all that nice when you hit it.
While Barcia will definitely not be invited to Dungey’s upcoming nuptials, he said he’s toned down his aggressive approach somewhat since making the leap from the 250s to the 450 ranks in 2012.
“When I was racing 250s, I was hanging it out there and I didn’t care if I was bumping people,” Barcia said. “I’ve matured a lot in the last two years since going from 250cc to 450cc. I’m a slightly smarter racer.”
Barcia have at least one big fan in Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, who recently signed him to drive for his Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX team for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
“I’ve been hanging out with Joe Gibbs quite a bit. He’s a great person,” said Barcia, who calls Gibbs “the coach”. “He’s really tenacious when it comes to winning. It doesn’t matter if it’s winning in life, NASCAR or dirt bikes, he wants to win. He is a very passionate person.”
Since leading the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl championships, Gibbs has produced three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series titles and four NASCAR Nationwide Series owner titles as the owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, along with some NHRA drag racing success.
Gibbs, 73, whose motocross team debuted in 2008, is still shooting for his first title on two wheels. Barcia, a two-time 250cc champion who won the 2012 Monster Energy Cup, is hoping to deliver.
“My goal is to win championships with the team,” he said. “They want to win just as badly as I do, so I think we can definitely do it.”
Assuming his surgically repaired ankle holds up, Barcia will make his debut for Gibbs’ team tonight. He has not competed since his reconstructive ankle surgery in June. The surgery was performed by a doctor recommended by Gibbs.
Barcia only started driving again three weeks ago and were reluctant to agree until after training with Sam Boyd on Thursday and Friday.
“My goal is obviously to race, but we’ll see how practice goes,” he said. “Actually, I feel really good. As soon as I got on Joe Gibbs’ bike, I felt comfortable. It’s really fast, like a rocket.”
While the regular Supercross season consists of 17 20-lap main events, the Monster Energy Cup is a unique, one-off event consisting of three 10-lap races. If a driver wins all three mains, he leaves Vegas a million dollars richer. Ryan Villopoto accomplished the feat in 2011, the first year the event was held in Las Vegas. James Stewart won the trophy last year but not the $1 million prize.
A unique aspect of the Monster Energy Cup is that in each race all drivers must take the longer joker lane for one lap.
“That’s the biggest thing. That can be difficult,” Barcia said. “You have to remember to hit that.”
And in Bam Bam’s case, anything else that gets in his way.
■ NOTES — Practice and qualifying start at 12:30pm. today, with the main event scheduled for 6 (FS2, Cox Channel 219). … Tickets range from $56 to $76 and can be purchased online (UNLVtickets.com, SupercrossOnline.com), at the Sam Boyd Stadium box office, or by calling 702-739-FANS.
