Mitch Lightfoot explains what’s next after KU basketball career

After six seasons and 167 games, Mitch Lightfoot is disqualified from college basketball. The big man’s KU basketball career came to an end in New Orleans in April, when Lightfoot and KU’s other super seniors got to max out their respective admission watches in style. After Lightfoot’s college career ended, he raised questions about what might be next for him after KU’s mid-April season-ending banquet.

“I want to keep playing, but at the end of the day my goal is to be a coach,” Lightfoot said. “I want to train, find my way back into the coaching business I think Coach Self, who’s been with him for six years, is learning some things that can add to a program and help a team.

If his professional playing career doesn’t work out and he actually becomes a coach, would Lightfoot want to train at KU? Or start somewhere else?

“I think Kansas will always be my home, so obviously I’d rather be here than anywhere else,” Lightfoot said. “KU is a place where I grew into a man. And I would definitely [want to coach at] KU.”

In recent years, there have been many precedents for ex-basketball players returning to KU and working under Bill Self. Perry Ellis returned to KU for a season, serving as assistant video coordinator while rehabilitating his knee from an injury. Of course, three employees from Self played at the KU. Jeremy Case, Brendan Bechard and Brady Morningstar all played for KU and all three won a national championship with KU in 2008.

Case is currently one of Self’s three assistant coaches. Bechard is KU’s Director of Student-Athlete Development and Morningstar is KU’s Video Coordinator.

As for Lightfoot’s KU basketball career, he was a four-star recruit who dropped out of high school. Lightfoot was a rotation member on KU’s 2016-17 team. As a true freshman, he played in 25 games and averaged 4.1 minutes per game. As a sophomore, he supported Udoka Azubuike and was part of KU’s Final Four team that lost to Villanova in the national semifinals. He started seven games this season and averaged 14 minutes per game. In 2018-19, Lightfoot came off the bench again.

Then, before the 2019-20 season, the decision was made that Lightfoot would play Redshirt. He was on a team that appeared poised to hit a deep run before the COVID pandemic forced the season to be abandoned. Lightfoot played as a reserve again in 2020–21.

Due to the pandemic, Lightfoot was granted an additional year of eligibility. As a super senior, he played in all 40 games in 2021-22 and started in three. His 4.6 points per game with 66.1 percent shooting from the field were both career highs. Lightfoot ended his career with a national title.
