‘I want to show intimacy between men’ how Murray Bartlett became a breakout star at 50

In the midst of the pandemic, Murray Bartlett began to wonder if he would ever work as an actor again. “I thought, ‘What should I do? Do I teach acting?'” He and his partner had recently left New York for Provincetown, Massachusetts, unsure if the move would jeopardize his potential roles. The virus added another note of uncertainty.

In the grip of that career crisis came the call that led to the most compelling role he’s ever had. If one television scene can sum up the mood of our times, it’s Bartlett as a stressed-out luxury hotel manager, Armond, pooping in the suitcase of an obscenely privileged, obnoxious guest. Armond begins the six-part series, The White Lotus, determined to do his job well to please everyone necessary. But as disaster unfolds, his eyes shine, his mood changes, and it’s clear decorum is being put aside. His descent from confident, efficient, sober hotelier to rogue manager, intoxicated by stolen drugs from two teenage guests, determined to sabotage a deeply awkward honeymoon, is spectacular – and quite possibly the TV moment of the year.

It’s not often that an actor gets his breakthrough role at 50, but given his extraordinary performance, Bartlett seems to have been under-utilized for most of his career. In 2002, a guest role in Sex and the City (as a shoe importer whom Carrie meets at a gay club) brought him worldwide attention; This was followed by long-term roles in the US soaps “All My Children” and “Guiding Light”. In 2014 he was one of three leads on HBO’s Looking – listed by that newspaper as one of the top 100 shows of the 21st century – and in 2019 he took on the role of Michael “Mouse” Tolliver in Netflix’s remake of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the Town.

Bartlett was excited about the role of hotel manager. “Armond represents that part of all of us that’s like, ‘What the hell? What do we do? What’s going on?’ He wakes up with the madness of the nightmare he’s in and just can’t keep up the public face anymore.” The character has an “incredible trajectory,” he says. “For an actor, that is a dream thing – for me at least – because I don’t think I’ve had many opportunities to do it.”

Armond begins the series as a quiet, competent, mustachioed hotelier, elegant in a pink blazer and floral shirt. But the guests are starting to wear him down — particularly the Bratty Shane (played by Jake Lacy), a rich kid who can’t get over the fact that the suite he wanted was double-booked and he no longer has his own plunge pool.

As the passive-aggressive conflict escalates, Armond relapses after five years of sobriety. He proposes to the teenage guests’ father, whose cocktail of ketamine and prescription drugs he takes, and Dillon, a porter. As the chaos rages on, he attempts to sabotage Shane and his wife’s whereabouts.

Would Bartlett have acted similarly in Armond’s shoes? “No, I think I would have internalized it all,” he says. “I’m too much of a human pleasure and would have been eaten up inside. I would have quit this job years ago; I don’t think I could have lasted as long as Armond.”

It feels like really good timing… I’m a little smarter. I am anchored in myself

While Armond is certainly no hero in the strictest sense – he does have some seedy tendencies – it’s hard not to sympathize with his plight. I ask him how he felt filming the defecation scene as his character bids farewell to all accepted social conventions. “There’s something very satisfying as an actor when you give him license to explore what this character is thinking or feeling,” says Bartlett. When he read the script, he wasn’t worried about acting the scene. “It’s the moments after that when you’re like, ‘Oh wait, that means I have to be in a room with 100 people and shit in a suitcase. This is going to be weird.’”

Bartlett used his experiences of addiction to try to understand Armond. “I have people in my life who have substance abuse issues, and being a permeable person, I tend to absorb other people’s emotional states,” he says. “And while I really don’t know what it’s like on the inside, I feel like I have a lot of insight through people in my life and my own relationship with addiction.”

Bartlett says he has an emotional addiction that manifests as a need for relationships. “I’ve gone through phases in my life where I’ve felt this more strongly. I don’t struggle with addiction in the traditional sense, but I do feel very aware of these tendencies within myself at various times in my life,” he says. “Sometimes when I’ve broken up with relationships, I’ve completely broken down because it’s my drug. Unless you have addiction problems it’s hard to understand what that is, but emotionally I feel like I can make sense.

Bartlett also used his time in the service industry to prepare for the role. “I was a waiter and a bartender. I have had good experiences; not all were terrible,” he says. “But there have always been those experiences where you just notice people in that position of little power, or they feel like they’re owed something, and they treat you like shit.”

Has he been nicer to the service staff since working on the show? “I’m pretty sure I’m not the moron; I think I have more confidence than that,” he says. “But one of the great things about this show is that we all have these characters or elements of these characters within us that we have to pay attention to. There are aspects of us that are just there, and choosing to favor the better parts of our nature is an ongoing thing.”

Bartlett first realized he loved performing when he was a kid after his older brother knocked out two of his front teeth. A group of children gathered around a spider on a rock in Perth, Australia, where he grew up. His brother swung back a hammer to crush it, and… well, you can do the rest. He later lost two more front teeth by “twirling around in a blanket to music in our basement.”

He had to wait years for his adult teeth to grow in their place. When they did, he was still having trouble pronouncing the “S” correctly (“I said ‘Eth'”), so he went to a speech therapist. “She was this amazing woman who got me into doing monologues and saying poetry, and I just loved it,” says Bartlett. Theater camps, acting schools and auditions paved the way for his professional future.

He’s speaking via video call from his Provincetown home, armed with a smoothie to wake him up. He has trouble sleeping — nightmares about producers criticizing his piano skills. He is warm and kind; he says having his teeth knocked out “feels fateful now because I love being an actor.”

Bartlett was born in Sydney and moved to Perth when he was four years old. He said he was “very happy and loved very much,” especially by his mother, who “made me feel like who I wanted to be.” Coming out as gay has never been a problem for them; His mother had many gay friends and he had many role models.

“My problems started when I went to drama school and grew up. I was like, ‘Oh shit, why doesn’t everyone love me like my mom did?’” He grins broadly.

While it was “very easy” to come out to his mother, it was “a little more complex because he has religious beliefs that don’t — that struggle with people being gay. So that was a challenge.” Did his father accept that his son is gay? “He loves me, I know that. And I love him,” says Bartlett. “I think it’s a tricky thing to come to peace and acceptance of other people’s different views of the world or their belief systems without deviating from what I believe.

“I will, you know, do my best not to… I found it very painful for many years…” he pauses and looks away. He’s silent for about 30 seconds. When he turns back to the screen, tears are running down his cheeks. “I didn’t know it was still painful I guess.”

We can move on if it’s too painful, I say. “No, it’s okay, I actually want to finish it,” he says and pulls himself together. “It’s packed with a lot of other things, like being in this country, and it’s very divided. And how do you deal with it without making the other an enemy? How do you put aside your own personal belongings and just choose to love someone? This is my challenge with my father.

“I would like to have a relationship where I feel unconditionally loved in that way. And I know that he feels that he loves me unconditionally. But for me it’s a bit more complex. But I know he’s very proud of me,” he says.

Bartlett’s acting career began in the early ’90s with recurring roles on Home and Away and Neighbors before moving to New York in 2000 and landing the role of Sex and the City. Bartlett didn’t talk about being gay, but he didn’t hide his sexuality either. Some would have seen a gay actor in a gay role as a career ending back then, but Bartlett never crossed his mind.

“I love this show. I was just super excited,” he says. “Maybe I should have considered that. But I don’t think so. I guess it just wasn’t a problem for me.”

After Sex and the City he mainly worked on All My Children and then Guiding Light. He was having fun, while the number of episodes — more than 250 in the case of Guiding Light — helped him overcome the need to fixate on past performances. Still, he worried about how this work was perceived. “I guess you always want your peers to see you doing something wonderful, and I wondered how some people would react to that,” he says.

Has the lack of more well-known roles frustrated him? “Sure, sometimes. But this is the path you choose. You learn a lot from being rejected a lot of what you do as an actor. Most of the time you don’t get the jobs.

“Sometimes you think, ‘Well, maybe that’s it — maybe I’ve gone as far as I can go,’ or ‘Is that still practical?'” he says. “There were times when I didn’t have those opportunities [like The White Lotus] where I thought, ‘I feel like there’s a lot more I can do, and I want to be able to show that.’ And that’s how it was sometimes I thought : ‘Maybe that’s just not my way.’”

You learn a lot from many rejections… Most of the time you don’t get the jobs

In roles like Dom in Looking, which explored the nuances of gay life for three men in San Francisco, and gay protagonist Mouse in Tales of the City, Bartlett has found meaning in “showing intimacy, especially between men, in a one Way that feels authentic and feels loving and feels connected in a way that I feel like we don’t see enough of.” This includes a scene in The White Lotus where Armond licks Dillon over his desk.

“I’m hoping that this way, thanks to Queer as Folk and Tales of the City and The L Word, we’ll see more freedom of expression — all the shows that’ve come out before that are starting to push those limits so we don’t have to do that , as if these things don’t happen, or hide them.”

Bartlett is next up for a role in another HBO drama, The Last of Us. Given the hype – it’s based on the critically acclaimed and hugely successful video game of the same name – Bartlett’s star will likely shine even brighter. It’s taken some time, but it feels like he’s finally got his big break.

“It’s definitely a surprise,” he says. “It’s certainly not like I expected it to happen. But now that it’s happened, it feels like really good timing… I’m a little smarter. I am anchored in myself.”

Bartlett says he’s enjoying getting older — “I mean, I’m in a little more pain than I used to be” — but the week leading up to his 50th birthday came with a period of “internal turmoil.”

“It’s natural — for me at least — to hit those milestones where you look back and think, ‘Well, am I where I want to be in my life?’ And I am,” he says . “We have decided to move away from the city; I’m back in nature, which I feel is my natural habitat. I’m in a wonderful relationship. I had this amazing opportunity to do this job. Thinking back, I just felt incredibly fortunate and fortunate to be where I am.”
