The only son of South Korean immigrants Min-yeong Lee (이민영) and Jae-hong Yang (양재홍), Yang was born and raised in Pflugerville, Texas. He is the middle child of two sisters, Christie Yang and Whitney Yang. Raised in Pflugerville, Yang’s family was one of the few Asian Americans in their community. He struggled with body image issues and low self-esteem because, by his own admission, nobody looked like him and he was bullied because of his looks.[3][4]
He lost his Texan accent early on at the urging of his sister, who told him he might have trouble getting into Ivy League schools. He was initially skeptical about films, stating that his doubts about mainstream acceptance stemmed from the fact that Asians were not represented in films and that they were queer.[1]
“I was a very insecure, self-confident kid, and even more so as an artist. I always assumed that being different was a curse – that I was being held back by my Asian and queer identity. My time online has shown me that viewers will respond most to authentic storytelling.”[1]
At school he engaged in artistic activities, including fine arts, illustration, theatre, choir and dance.[8] However, a seventh grade teacher recommended that he consider studying filmmaking.
