8 Things You Didn’t Know About Oculus Rift’s 22-Year-Old Founder

We’ve heard a lot about the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset — like it launched on Kickstarter, and subsequently Facebook acquired for $ 2.3 billion — or it could be used to bring users into some pretty smooth artificial 3D environments.

But what we hear less about is the 22-year-old Oculus Rift founder, Palmer Luckey, who isn’t wild about press coverage and admits he doesn’t want to be the face of his company like Steve Jobs is for Apple.

The Telegraph recently sat down with Mr. Luckey in his office — or, to be more precise, “his own suite on the top floor of Facebook’s headquarters.” Here are some fun facts about Mr. Palmer:

1) He does not wear shoes.

At least, not real shoes. The day he met the Telegraph, he was wearing leather flip flops (along with a “crumpled Hawaiian shirt” and “khaki board shorts,” FYI).

“We invented shoes to protect our feet from the harsh environment,” he said, when asked why he doesn’t wear real shoes, “but I live in modern-day California. It’s pretty safe. here. Nothing will happen if I remove them. Also, it puts you in better contact with the world. ”

2) He was probably a weird kid.

Mr. Luckey studied at home, and “spent most of his childhood indoors.”

Even when his three siblings were playing, Mr. Lucky will “earn a foothold in repairing and selling iPhones.”

3) Maybe he’s had a nightmare to get along with for the past 7 years.

No, seriously — look at what he said he’s been doing since he was 15:

“Since I was 15, I’ve tried to act and speak like I’m a public figure, because I’m sure that someday and I want to be ready.”

4) He says his life is not like HBO’s Silicon Valley.

Unlike Erlich Bachman of Silicon Valley, Mr. Luckey said he was never touched by drugs. He doesn’t even drink alcohol. (However, he drinks coconut water for its health benefits, even though he “hates” it.)

Also unlike Silicon Valley keynote speakers, Mr. Luckey seems to have the ability to interact with women. He lives with his 21-year-old girlfriend of five years, Nicole Edelmann, “whom he met at a summer debate camp in Virginia where they found out they both love to play.”

5) He loves Elon Musk.

Mr. Luckey reportedly didn’t scatter his money on anything big — other than a $ 120,000 Tesla car. He said it “represents the best in American engineering” and that Mr. Musk “is a cool guy who deserves my money.”

The staff of Betabeat is also cool, maybe Mr. Luckey.

6) He’s more of a Steve Wozniak than a Steve Jobs.

Mr. Luckey said he wanted virtual reality — and not him, himself — to be the center of people’s attention.

“I’m telling you in a few years I’m not going to be the face of a company like Steve Jobs at Apple,” he said. “I will return in the dark. I’ll be more like a Wozniak. ”

No news yet if he bought a Segway.

7) He admitted that he was a bit superficial.

Although the Oculus Rift has potential applications in the fields of health, education and travel (to name but a few), Mr. Luckey said he is most excited to see it used for video games.

“I’m a shallow person,” he said. “I mean, I expect a lot of things to see it used, but in terms of personal excitement it’s video games.”

8) He didn’t invent a virtual reality headset so he could escape the real world.

Honestly, the story isn’t that deep, and with Mr. Luckey using the phrase “da hood” while probably making air quotes.

When asked if he invented a parallel world to escape a mistake in his own world, Mr. Luckey said:

Fake News The Reporting of Palmer Luckey and Nimble America

As journalists-especially those, who publish a lot of articles every week-we often focus on the now-now-now, so we rarely step back and reflect on stories from a few news cycles of the past. Especially when those stories are inaccurate, misleading or outright wrong. It’s easier to make a small correction or two (or maybe none at all) and move on to the next piece.

It’s pretty understandable why this is happening — we’re busy, readers have lost interest, and so on. etc. — but ignoring these things leads to a kind of systematic problem: a lack of accountability, which should be incredibly relevant to all of us. Because, in retrospect, it’s easy to see how this dynamic becomes fertile ground for “fake news.”

Like many of us today, “fake news” is on my mind. But the problem — or at least one of them! —Is that we think fake news is a binary thing; a story is either fake or not; a story is either fictional (Elvis Lives!) or true (Cubs Win the World Series!) but in many cases fake news doesn’t really work that way. Instead, it starts with a deceptive or inaccurate story — often with a sexy headline — and then erupts on social media, fueled by anger, support or concern, and then becomes a dogpile of stories that may echoes the original piece (but with a twist) or reinforce anger/support/concern by talking about what the other person is talking about.

Like I said: it’s something I had in mind, but it’s something I tried to put aside as I finished my new book (about VR). Until, unfortunately, such an incident became part of the story I was writing; in September, The Daily Beast published an article titled Palmer Luckey: The Facebook Billionaire Secretly Funding Trump’s Meme Machine.

I’m sure you remember that article (how could you not have such a headline!) And I’m sure you remember some of the parts that followed — like Ars Technica’s How your Oculus Rift is secretly funding Donald Trump’s racist meme wars or Secretly funded by Boing Boing’s Facebook ‘near-billionaire’ Palmer Luckey is the racist pro-Trump hate meme machine — as well as the murder of Palmer Luckey on social media (and his girlfriend).

An assassination that, by the way, I’d argue would have been warranted … if what was described in those headlines was actually true. But that is not the case. Not even close. I can go into more detail if you like, but here’s a general overview of what happened and why — initially for my own records — I compiled this timeline.

In mid-September 2016, Palmer Luckey donated just $ 10,000 to a newly formed pro-Trump non-profit organization called Nimble America. At the time of his donation, the entire body of Nimble America’s work consisted of placing a billboard in the Pittsburgh area [pictured below]. Going forward, Nimble America plans to put up more billboards in battleground states (so the organization is looking for donations).

Now, whether you like Donald Trump or not, and whether or not you’ve seen the billboard above look good, it’s important to remember the following:

Nimble America is not responsible for creating or disseminating any meme online.

The goal of Nimble America is to take meme-like photos [like the billboard above] and place them in the real world (via billboards, t-shirts and stickers).

There is no evidence — or, based on my research, do I see no reason to believe — that this organization promoted any kind of racist, sexist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic or white supremacist agenda. Nor is there any evidence of Nimble America engaging in any form of trolling, harassment or “astroturfing.”

Milo Yiannopoulos has no affiliation with Nimble America other than to endorse the goal and, in his capacity as moderator of The_Donald subreddit, verify that there is indeed a wealthy supporter [Luckey] who donated to the organization [somewhat less than $ 10,000 ].

It is important to note these points because they are rarely seen in how this story is reported.Below is a timeline of how the story was reported and the ripples that occurred…

10:38 AM VentureBeat (Jeff Grubb)

I’m not surprised that Palmer Luckey is funding pro-Trump ‘shitposts’

“I’ve only talked to Luckey a few times over the years, but we’re also friends on Facebook. That didn’t really mean anything until July, when … in an attempt to taunt one of my other friends, the founder of Oculus used the syntax of 4chan’s “greentexting” to indicate that he is ridiculous.Greentexting is when 4chan users put a “>” symbol in front of their text to make it green. This means that the user is tells a story or the user quotes someone else to highlight how silly they are. ”

12:50 PM Polytron, the developers of a game called SUPERHYPERCUBE, published the following statement on pastebin:

You may have seen the news yesterday that Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey was linking to Nimble America, an organization endorsing Trump that Luckey began to discredit Clinton through the “power of Internet memes”.

In a political climate as fragile and appalling as this one, we cannot secretly endorse these actions by supporting Luckey or his platform.

As such, we will not be chasing Oculus support for our upcoming VR release, SUPERHYPERCUBE.

If you are a voted United States citizen, please remember to register and have your voice heard this November 8th. Don’t let bigotry, white supremacy, hatred and fear win.

“Okay, we understand, Luckey. You’re too young. You have a very silly, very white name … You have a sister named Ginger. If things are different, and you don’t have the money to fund a community of trolls who wants to elect Trump, you’ll probably be like other college dropouts in Long Beach, spending your student loans on novelty shot glasses at Urban Outfitters. ”

6:44 PM Palmer Luckey publishes the following post on his Facebook account:

I deeply regret that my actions have negatively affected the perception of Oculus and its partners. Recent news about me does not accurately represent my views. Here’s more background: I donated $ 10,000 to Nimble America because I thought the organization had new ideas on how to engage with young voters by using some billboards.I am a libertarian who is publicly supported to Ron Paul and Gary Johnson in the past, and I plan to vote Gary in this election as well.

I am committed to the principles of fair play and equal treatment. I didn’t write “NimbleRichMan” posts, or I deleted the account. Reports that I am a founder or employee of Nimble America are untrue. I have no plans to donate more than I have already given to Nimble America.

However, my actions are my own and do not represent Oculus. I regret the impact of my actions on the community.

Note: Cernovich linked to an article about Tim Hunt, a British biochemist who won the Nobel Prize, who was “mocked and slandered on Twitter and in the media after he told a gathering of female scientists that” women ” in the lab is a nuisance because they are lovesick crybaby. ”

The article went on to explain “It appears that, as Hunt said, the 72-year-old scientist’s comments at a luncheon at a science journalism conference in Korea in June were an awkward self-deprecating joke —Welcome with laughter (not the reported “stone of silence”) by most of the female audience. The narrative of “Tim Hunt, misogynist scientist” has gradually faded over the past month; last week, it ended with a snippet of audio recorded by a woman in attendance and made public by The Times. Now, the focus must be on the real scandal: irresponsible journalism fueled by social media chaos. ”

7:49 PM @bill_e_wheeler:

7:57 PM Jason Rubin publishes the following post on his Facebook account:

I wanted to give Palmer Freeman Luckey a chance to respond before I said anything, and read his post. I take him for what he said. Those who knew me before I joined Oculus knew that I would not work in an area that I feel is tolerated, or spreads hatred. I also wouldn’t be silent if I saw it raise its head. I have always believed that games, and now especially VR, have the potential to mobilize people. My perspective is unshakable. I continue to believe that Oculus can make the world a better place.

8:30 PM @k3nchi:

8:50 PM Brendan Iribe publishes the following post on his Facebook account:

I would like to respond to recent press stories involving Palmer. I know Palmer deeply regrets the impact of this situation on the company, our partners and the industry.

Everyone at Oculus is free to support issues or causes that matter to them, whether or not we agree with those views. It is important to note that Palmer acted independently in a personal capacity, and did not in any way represent the company.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey’s role in the Clinton smear team remains dark

8:59 PM Robert Scoble publishes the following post on his Facebook account:

Why Mark Zuckerberg should remove Palmer Freeman Luckey.

Because he’s playing on Reddit annoying many in the community instead of doing his job.

The HTC Vive has room scale VR. Oculus doesn’t. Vive has controllers now. Oculus doesn’t.

Vive is more fun.

Vive has developers around the world building for it and not Oculus.

This morning, a friend told me I trust that Google Daydream is better than anyone expected (that is coming October 4th). For me the real war is more than mobile.

Note: I’m just here speaking for myself and I have no idea what Upload VR thinks on this topic.Facebook is being beaten with VR and released by others in AR. It’s insane because you spent billions to get the Oculus.

You should keep this in mind because much of Facebook’s future depends on VR and AR.

Luckey didn’t do well for you. Take him away and get some management that understands how important this market is.

1:23 PM @ScrutaGames:

Since there is no evidence of this so far, we will temporarily resume work on Touch support.
