Almost a year ago, Staff Sgt. Travis M. Adams happened to be in the right place at the right time to respond to a multi-vehicle accident and help save lives in the local community.

For his heroism, the Fort Rucker flight medic was honored in a ceremony at the U.S. Army Aviation Museum awarded the Soldier’s Medal by Maj. Gen. David J. Francis, commanding general of the United States Army Aviation Center, on August 27.

To earn the Soldier’s Medal, a person must be in personal danger and risk their life to save another, Francis explained.

“This is a rare event. In 32 years of service I have never presented a soldier’s medal and I have only attended one ceremony. This is a very unique award and well deserved by Staff Sgt. Adams,” said Francis.

On October 9, 2020, Adams just got off a 24-hour flight medic shift with FLATIRON (Fort Rucker’s Air Ambulance Detachment) and was spending some quality time that day with his wife and son at a park in the Ozark. Alabama.

Shortly after exiting the park, they encountered the scene of a multiple vehicle accident. It was in a dangerous spot near a bend in a road, with the wreckage hidden from oncoming traffic. Adams parked their family vehicle and immediately ran down the hill to assess the situation and perform triage.

The driver of a pickup truck whose airbags had deployed was dazed but unharmed and was on what Adams thought was a 911 call. But it soon became apparent that no one, not even viewers, had called for help. Adams’ wife called.

Adams approached a badly damaged sedan. One side of the vehicle had been ripped off and a female passenger was still trapped inside, screaming, with the roof down on her, pinning her in the car.

As he spoke to the passenger, he heard her say, “Help her.”

Adams immediately walked around the car and searched for the driver, who had been violently ejected from the vehicle and was lying face down in broken glass on the road, motionless.

His first thought was that the driver hadn’t survived the accident, but as he approached her, she began to regain consciousness and began screaming in pain from being unable to move.

A ruptured fuel line that came off the vehicle sprayed gasoline directly onto the woman who was lying on the ground. The vehicle began to spark and smoke, making hissing noises and the gas pooled around them.

“The scene was clearly not safe for her,” Adams said.

Adams bent the fuel line away from her. He got her permission to get her off the fuel and to safety. He, too, became saturated with fuel but continued the rescue effort despite the gleaming engine block.

He returned to the car, crawled through the driver’s side, lifted the roof with his back, and forced the passenger to climb out of the vehicle. She was bleeding from her head and had some bruising on her legs, but otherwise seemed fine.

He put the passenger on the curb and went back to continue helping the driver, who was in much worse shape.

“I checked her pulse motor sensing, meaning her ability to move and feel her feet, checked if she had a step off her spine, which would be like a misalignment,” Adams said, recalling the checklist from his army training.

Adams continued to keep the victims calm and reassured them while they waited for the ambulance to arrive.

When first responders arrived at the scene, Adams relayed the information to emergency services personnel, and both women were transported to care.

Recalling the events of that day, Adams said he was only doing what he hoped someone else in a similar situation would do for his own family and he’s glad it worked out the way it did is.

“It might as well go the other way,” he said. “If you put yourself in a situation where someone has already been hit on a blind corner – someone could just as easily have hit my wife’s car and just as easily have hit me on the road. You do what feels right and hope nothing else happens.”

Zyisha Carson, 18, who was the driver of the car that day, attended the ceremony along with her mother, Carmella Carson. It was the first time they were officially introduced to Adams.

“They told me someone helped me, but I didn’t know who it was,” Zyisha said. “It’s amazing because I knew someone was there to help me.”

Thankfully, Zyisha has made an incredible recovery. She was hospitalized for 11 days after the accident, with five broken bones and a pelvis crushed on one side, Carmella said.

“They said she beat all odds,” Carmella said. “You didn’t expect her to be able to walk. Now she plays basketball for Enterprise State Community College.”
