A Mount Holyoke College art professor has been sentenced to at least a decade in prison after pleading guilty to beating and torturing a colleague with a poker and pruning shears for four hours because the woman didn’t have the same feelings for her.
Rie Hachiyanagi, 50, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 to 12 years in a Massachusetts state penitentiary for assaulting colleague Lauret Savoy on the night of December 23, 2019, leaving her with permanent injuries, PEOPLE confirms.

The verdict came five days after Hachiyanagi pleaded guilty in Franklin Superior Court to nine counts related to the brutal attack, including three counts of armed assault with intent to murder a person over 60 and one count each of home invasion , mayhem and entering at night with intent to commit a crime.

“She betrayed my trust, broke into my home and tried to kill me with premeditated violence,” Savoy said in a victim statement at the hearing, the Associated Press reports. “The cruelty she carried out with weapons and expressed in words was extreme.”

Judge Francis Flannery called the attack one of the “most horrifying facts I’ve ever heard,” saying, according to a press release from the Northwest District Attorney’s Office, “Professor Savoy is certainly the victim of a terrible crime, but that’s not what I’m about to do.” to remember.”
“I will remember that she had the presence of mind and courage to convince her attacker not to kill her,” he said. “When her body failed her, she used her wits to save herself. That is remarkable.”
A terrifying ordeal
On the night of December 23, 2019, Hachiyanagi, a professor at the prestigious South Hadley Women’s College, showed up at Savoy’s and said she wanted “to talk about her feelings,” according to a State Police report obtained by the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
As soon as she entered, Hachiyanagi began beating Savoy with a rock, poker, and secateurs for four agonizing hours.
In the early hours of December 24, 2019, Hachiyanagi called 911 and said she found Savoy “in a pool of blood,” “barely breathing,” and “semi-conscious and with a head injury,” according to a state police report by the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
She said she saw signs of a struggle but police found no sign of an intruder, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reports.
Hachiyanagi told police she was covered in blood for holding her friend, local broadcaster WWLP reports.
According to the state police report, Savoy was rushed to a local hospital with broken bones around his nose and eyes and numerous lacerations and stab wounds to his head and face.

Savoy said she “thought she was going to die at the hands of Hachiyanagi,” according to the state police report.
When Savoy asked Hachiyanagi why she was attacking her, Hachiyanagi replied “that she loved her for many years and she should have known,” the report said.
A quick-thinking Savoy halted the attacks by “playing along” with Hachiyanagi, saying she had the same feelings and telling her to call 911, the report said.
When officers arrested Hachiyanagi at her home on December 24, they found her in possession of the victim’s keys, cell phone and glasses, reports the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
Prosecutors had recommended a 10- to 12-year sentence in state prison with three years probation, an order to stay away from Savoy, wear a surveillance device for a year and undergo counseling, WWLP reports.
Hachiyanagi’s attorney had recommended 5 to 7 years in state prison and probation because she had no criminal record and struggled with anger issues, WWLP reports.
The judge said that while Hachiyanagi was respected and had no criminal record, “on the other hand, I have this defendant who attempted to torture someone to death for over four hours who was not an enemy but a friend.”

Rie Hachiyanagi, 50, an art professor at Mount Holyoke College in western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley, pleaded guilty Friday in Franklin County Superior Court to nine counts related to the assault on Professor Lauret Savoy at Savoy’s home, according to the Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan.
After changing the hearing last week, Judge Francis Flannery adjourned the court until Wednesday morning, where he sentenced Hachiyanagi to 10 to 12 years in state prison.
Hachiyanagi appeared at Savoy’s home late in the evening of December 23, 2019, claiming she was seeking emotional support following a breakup.
After Savoy opened the door, Hachiyanagi punched her, held her in what prosecutors called a “four-hour torture session” that lasted into the wee hours of Christmas Eve, and allegedly told Savoy she had loved her for years and Savoy should have known her feelings.
In a statement shared in court, Savoy, who teaches geology and environmental sciences, said she “suffered literal physical and mental torture, not knowing if I would survive the next minute — and yet had to find a way to save my life.”
Savoy said Hachiyanagi told her she would not live long after realizing how much blood she had lost, according to the Greenfield Recorder, and seeing her continue to bleed while taunting her, telling her she was being blinded and be disfigured before she was killed.
“She betrayed my trust, broke into my home and tried to kill me with premeditated violence,” Savoy said. “The cruelty she carried out with weapons and expressed in words was extreme.”
According to the prosecutor, Savoy suffered stab and stab wounds in addition to broken bones. Her face was broken after Hachiyanagi restrained and hit her repeatedly in an act of “random ferocity”.
Savoy eventually persuaded Hachiyanagi to seek help, prosecutors said, but her trauma lingered.
“The emotional, physical, financial and professional impact of this crime has been tremendous and is ongoing,” Savoy said Friday. “Now the defendant’s violation of my person becomes part of a public figure that I did not choose. It has invaded my privacy, my career, my life.”
Hachiyanagi pleaded guilty to, among other things, three counts of armed assault for the murder of a person over the age of 60, three counts of assault and assault with a dangerous weapon to a person over the age of 60, and single counts of mayhem, home invasion and entering a night residence for a crime, according to prosecutors.
Her lawyer Thomas Kokonowski had pushed for a shorter prison sentence of five to seven years with subsequent probation. He argued that Hachiyanagi had no criminal history before attacking Savoy. He also argued that Hachiyanagi struggled to manage her outbursts of anger.
Hachiyanagi initially pleaded not guilty in February 2020 and was being held without bail at the Franklin County Jail after her arrest. Last month, a Franklin County Superior Court judge ruled that she could be conditionally released if $5,000 bail was posted. That bail was revoked after Hachiyanagi changed her request on Friday.
The former professor began teaching at Mount Holyoke in 2004 and had taught in the school’s art, art history and Asian studies departments before the attack.

He further commended the victim for having the courage to convince Hachiyanagi not to kill her.
