A former prostitute and international drug trafficker has turned her life upside down and found love with a former prison guard.
Simone Starr was a bikini model and penthouse pet before becoming a figure in Sydney’s underworld in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
After fleeing to the United States after a package bomb detonated in front of her then-boyfriend Brett Boyd on the city’s North Shore, Starr was arrested in 2009 for methamphetamine smuggling and sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
During her time as an inmate at Dillwaynia Women’s Prison in 2017, when she collapsed after a particularly intense rehabilitation program, she met Britt Young – the future love of her life.
“It was very confronting. I didn’t listen to anyone at the time, I used to be a Pied Piper and she took the time to give me time,” Starr told the Daily Telegraph.
For three weeks, the former military man checked on the inmate almost every day in what they called a “mentor”.

“It was very confronting. I didn’t listen to anyone back then, I used to be a Pied Piper and she took the time to give me time,” said Starr (pictured left, with her new love Ms Young).
Starr, who was 28 at the time, stressed there was no romantic attraction at first and said Ms Young helped her understand that she needed more self-esteem.
The couple did not see each other after Starr was moved to the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Center in Silverwater, in western Sydney, but Ms Young had helped motivate her to finish 11th and 12th grades and enroll in university .
After working in a factory, she said, “I had never worked so hard before and I realized, ‘Hey, I don’t need to sell myself for money.’
Starr claimed in court that her mother, who worked as a prostitute in their home, introduced her to sex work when she was a teenager.
The couple did not see each other after Starr was transferred to the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Center in Silverwater, in western Sydney (Starr pictured).

After being paroled in 2019, she moved to the eastern suburbs and reached out to Ms. Young on Facebook to thank her for the impact she was having on her life after two years.
The warden responded and said it was inappropriate for a serving warden to speak to a former prisoner, so Starr asked her to come forward if her circumstances ever changed.
Shortly thereafter, Ms. Young gave up her uniform and resigned.
“Something was like, ‘You’ve got to try this thing … The only way you can do that is to back down before that,'” Ms. Young said.

Starr waited at a nearby coffee shop, and the two haven’t spent a day apart since.
Ms Young, who grew up in north-west Sydney, said her parents taught her not to judge a book by its cover.
“The day I actually spoke to her, I knew she was looking at me and thinking, ‘This screw is real and sincere,'” she said.
The happy couple now live together in Sydney.

“I have a bad stomach and I don’t want to be that person,” she tells Sunday Night’s Alex Cullen.
Simone never knew her father and her mother was a prostitute while enrolled in some of Australia’s most exclusive boarding schools.
