Allison began her television career behind the scenes at ABC News after graduating from Hampton University. She was later inducted into the Scripps Howard School of Journalism Hall of Fame by her alma mater.
Less than two years after graduating from Hampton University, she entered the Masters of Mass Communication program at the University of South Carolina in Columbia
Her career eventually took her to Binghamton, New York, where she became the first woman to serve as the main presenter on WBNG. She then helped launch WXXA at 10:00 p.m. News in Albany, New York.
“In the summer of 1999, I got the call I was waiting for from WTTG,” Allison recalled.
Allison was initially hired as a general reporter for the evening news, but also served as a health reporter, midday and midday anchor during her time on FOX 5.
“Since 2007, I’ve been fortunate enough to serve as the lead lady on the shows I’ve come to love, the FOX 5 Morning Show and Good Day DC,” she said. “During my time at WTTG I have felt the support of our viewers both on and off air through my marriage and the birth of our three daughters. Capitol Communicator asked people who are or have been in the media about their careers and the media. Below is our Q&A with Allison Seymour, who left the morning show on WTTG-TV, FOX 5 D.C. after two decades and is now a host on WUSA9’s Get Up DC!
I began my career behind the camera in ABC News’ Washington, D.C. office as a desk assistant and production assistant. Unsure of how to advance my career, I went to grad school at the University of South Carolina and earned a Master of Mass Communication degree. Still clueless as to how to break into television news as a reporter, I won an AFTRA internship at FOX5, where I learned the basics of reporting. I later took a job as a writer and production assistant at an unusual news outlet called Trucker TV. “Trucker” eventually ran out of money and I closed, but between my FOX internship and submitting reports for Trucker TV I was able to amass enough material for a resume role and landed my first on-air job in Utica, NY in the winter of 1993 From there it was to Binghamton, NY, where I became the first woman and African American to host the evening news on WBNG. Albany, NY was the next stop where I helped start FOX station (WXXA) and its 10 p.m. news. Next came St. Louis, MO and I was the weekend presenter for the ABC affiliate. Finally, in the fall of 1999, I got the call I had been waiting for from my hometown of Washington, D.C., and FOX5 offered me a job as a reporter. I became a morning news anchor and stayed with WTTG-TV for almost 21 years before making the jump to WUSA9 and the morning show Get Up DC, where I am today.
Why did you go on the news?
I tell this story often because it’s true, but I remember watching a TV commercial as a kid of these happy looking people walking around the church greeting people so eager seemed to meet them too. I later learned that this was a news promo and not an advertisement, but I was definitely hooked and wanted to be one of the people the community was looking for information and, yes, even some happiness. When I was in high school, I was addicted to watching local news and adoring the women I saw on TV who gave invaluable information and heartily said to the viewer at the end of the show, “Thank you for joining us connected”. When I entered Hampton University in the fall of 1984, I had no doubts that I wanted to study journalism and join the ranks of the television reporters and hosts I saw on television.
What would have been your second career choice?
Although I’ve wanted to be a news person since I was a little girl, I have a deep love of history. The only other career choice I ever considered was to be an archaeologist. It’s worth noting that my 7th grade history teacher was the one who swayed me from this dream, telling me that if I pursued this passion, my fingernails would always be dirty. True story.
What kind of stories moved you the most?
Over the past 27 years there have been so many stories from the five television markets I’ve worked in. Without a doubt, the horrific events of September 11, 2001 will always remain in my memory. I was expecting my second child and I remember thinking, “What kind of world am I putting her in?” A year later, I was covering the D.C. sniper case while remaining vigilant myself as I filled my gas tank, just like that Rest of the people in the metro region. As a mother I was. and remain immensely moved by the disappearance of young Relisha Rudd from a D.C. animal shelter. and the outpouring of love and support from the community trying to find her in the years since. Despite all this bad news, the stories that move me the most are about ordinary people and extraordinary charities helping their neighbors. Personally I am very proud of the work I have been involved in where I have had the opportunity to give vehicles to families or individuals who would otherwise do without them. A grandmother who is looking after four grandchildren and needs a car to take them to school and a parent who needs a car to take their son to cancer treatments to name a few. For years I was able to help with FOX5 to make this possible with the Easterns Automotive Group.
What are the worst and best parts of the job?
The worst thing about my job is seeing the ugly side of humanity, like the angry mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6th…or how cruel people can be to children or the weak. I strive for balance in this everyday life, to know that this is not the rule but the exception. The best part of my job is the same thing that drew me to the business in the first place, which is being an integral part of my community and sharing information that matters to people.
Who are your media role models?
My media role models are Carole Simpson, whom I met while working at ABC News in the late 1980s, Maureen Bunyan, a longtime news anchor in Washington, D.C., and the late Max Robinson, the network’s first African-American anchor and co-founder of the National Association of Black Journalists, along with Maureen Bunyan. I could see myself in these people and therefore knew that I could also make television news a career for myself.
What do you think is the biggest challenge for the media in the future?
The biggest challenge I see for the future of our industry is easy access to 24/7 news from sources other than traditional news outlets. It’s so hard to imagine that when I was growing up you basically got your news from three sources, ABC, CBS and NBC. We relied on our favorite anchor or station for our local news and you had to wait until 6pm or 11pm to get it! Sounds incredible right? Now there are too many news outlets to count, and more and more people are simply looking at their phones for information — some of it misinformation. At a time in our history when the media is sometimes demonized, I hope the public continues to seek reliable, credible information in this ever-changing news dynamic.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
When I’m not at work I enjoy spending time with my husband, radio personality Marc Clarke, and our three teenage daughters, Sydney, Skylar and Spencer. Our household is very busy with our two adopted “Furbabies”, our puppies, LadyBird and Gabby. As a family we love to travel, watch movies (on the couch now in times of the pandemic) and try new restaurants. Personally, I enjoy a good crime thriller on TV and history books. Our favorite vacation spot is Hilton Head Island, SC!
Is there anything else we should know about you?
Although I D.C. call home, I spent my first nearly four years abroad growing up with Peace Corps parents in West Africa and India. I believe this experience gave me a deep love and respect for other cultures.
