Forbes says Roger Penske’s net worth has close to tripled since onset of pandemic

Roger Penske hasn’t made the annual Forbes 400 list since 2015, but the man who owns Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar Series could be making a comeback.

On Tuesday, Forbes released its annual bid for the “final 2021 ranking of the richest Americans,” from Jeff Bezos (#1, $201 billion) to Arkansas investment banker Warren Stephens (#389, $2.9 billion). ). According to the company, individual net worths for the Forbes 400 were calculated using stock prices and exchange rates as of Sept. 3. The company also pored over Security and Exchange Commission files, court filings, and more, and considered holdings of both public and private companies, and an individual’s various art, yacht, airplane, and jewelry collections, among others.

With Forbes sticking to No. 400 on its fall list, we don’t know how close Penske came to the cut line in early September, but we do know he’s made some serious ground this year. Each spring, Forbes publishes its annual list of the world’s billionaires, which includes the founder and chairman of Penske Corp. in April at a value of $2.1 billion, good enough to rank 452nd in the United States and 1,517. achieve place in the world.

Penske’s Pandemic Recovery

That mark represented Penske’s highest recorded net worth in any of Forbes’ annual lists above since at least 2013, according to the automaker’s website profile. Additionally, it represented a nearly doubling of its net worth from April 2020 to April 2021, in line with the trend of America’s richest billionaires, whose combined wealth has increased by 40% from the summer of 2020 to the last month.

Back in April 2020, Forbes listed Penske as valued at $1.1 billion, a sharp drop from what he noted on the site’s real-time tracker when he announced plans to buy IMS and the IndyCar Series from Hulman & Co. announced. Nov February 4, 2019 ($1.6 billion). Since this spring, IndyCar has enjoyed a notable resurgence with four first-time winners, the arrival of world-renowned ex-F1 driver Romain Grosjean, landing contract renewals with series title sponsor NTT and exclusive broadcast partner NBC, and hosting the pandemic’s biggest one-day gathering yet at the Indy 500 in May.

More on Penske during the pandemic:

“I can tell you that with the extra years of our television contract and the fact that NBC would sign up for almost 80% of the races and (Indy 500) qualifiers on the network, that means something,” Penske told IndyStar at IndyCar season finale last month during an exclusive interview. “We can see it from a sponsorship standpoint, not just for the teams, but we see it with IMS and certainly with the sponsors for the races.

“Obviously COVID-19 has been really pushing us, but now it’s easing. You don’t build a good business overnight. If it comes too fast, maybe something is wrong.”

A Forbes 400 return in 2022?

Though his ownership of IndyCar and IMS is a relatively small part of his global automotive business, IndyCar has seen its own blessing, while at the same time Penske’s personal wealth has only grown.

While it’s currently unknown how close Penske was to this year’s Forbes 400 mark of $2.9 billion in September, he has now reached that mark, according to the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List. Thursday’s data put the 84-year-old at $2.9 billion, who was 1,161. richest person in the world and No. 403 in the United States. This makes Penske the tenth richest person in the US auto industry as of Thursday, and if he is in the “U.S. Sport” category (assuming no other crossovers would be applicable), it would place 14th.

For reference, Colts owner Jim Irsay is ranked 12th ($3.5 billion) in the US esports industry, and Pacers owner Herb Simon is not listed. Like so many American professional sports franchise owners, Simon’s largest source of his net worth is outside of sports (real estate), so his $3.4 billion net worth isn’t listed there.

More about Roger Penske:

Looking at nearly the past decade, Penske’s net worth has largely been steadily increasing, according to Forbes data. Penske’s penultimate appearance on the Forbes 400 was listed at $1.3 billion in September 2013. By the fall of 2015, it had climbed to $2 billion, although that had fallen back to $1.4 billion in the spring of the following year.

Two years later, in spring 2018, Forbes listed Penkse as valued at $1.7 billion, and that value appeared to have stayed largely the same the following year ($1.5 billion in March 2019 and March 1, 2019). $.6 billion in November of the same year). Pandemic.

Penske owns a large parent company, Penske Corp., which, according to the company’s website, “manages businesses with consolidated sales in excess of $32 billion, operates from over 3,200 locations and employs more than 60,000 people worldwide.” Its subsidiaries include Penske Automotive, an automobile and commercial vehicle dealership; Penske Truck Rental, a North American truck rental fleet; Penske Truck Leasing, a global transportation service provider; Penske Motor Group, a number of Toyota, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz dealerships; Team Penske; and Penske Entertainment.

Where does Penske rank in the IndyCar paddock?

Despite all that, Penske would rank fifth at best for the wealthiest people closely associated with the IndyCar Series. Maybe it’s the richest? Ernest Garcia II, listed at $18.8 billion and #39 in this week’s Forbes 400. Garcia, a 64-year-old Arizona resident, is believed to be the largest shareholder in Carvana, the major sponsor that backed Jimmie Johnson’s rookie IndyCar bid with Chip Ganassi Racing. His son, Ernest Garcia III, is the co-founder and CEO of Carvana and is number 83 on the list with a net worth of $9.3 billion.

One of Penske’s longtime sponsors at both NASCAR and IndyCar succeeds the elder Garcia. John Menard Jr., the founder and owner of his eponymous hardware store chain in the Midwest, has unveiled his brand as a primary sponsor of former Team Penske IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud’s No. 22 Chevy, as well as Ryan Blaney’s No. 12 Ford in the Cup Series . He sits at number 43 on this year’s Forbes 400 list and is said to be worth $16.6 billion.

Diane Hendricks was the co-founder and current Chair of one of IndyCar’s most prominent sponsors of the past two decades: ABC Supply. The company she founded with her late husband Ken emerged as a dedicated sponsor of A.J. Foyt Racing in 2005 and was one of the team’s key supporters until 2019.

ABC Supply also sponsored a portion of Tony Kanaan’s part-season run in 2020. Most recently, ABC Supply was on the Foyt Team’s #1 Chevy entry for J.R. To see Hildebrand in the Indy 500 in May. Hendricks is listed at number 64 in the country with a value of $11 billion.
