Von Teese was born in Rochester, Michigan, the second of three daughters.[6] Describing her hometown, she says, “It’s a universe far from the colored lights of Hollywood and Paris. But on weekend afternoons, my mom and I had a front seat on a rocket ship that took us through the old movies to those faraway worlds with the most glamorous creatures – Betty Grable, Mae West, Carmen Miranda, Marlene Dietrich… They were our muses.”[ 7] Her father was a machinist and her mother a manicurist.[6][8] She is of English, Scottish, Armenian and German descent.[9] Von Teese has stated that one of her grandmothers was half-Armenian and was adopted into an Anglo-Saxon American family.[10] Von Teese is known for her fascination with 1940s cinema and classic vintage style. This started at a young age and was encouraged by her mother buying clothes for her daughter to wear. Von Teese began performing burlesque in 1992 and, as a proponent of neo-burlesque, has helped popularize its revival.[24] In her own words, she “brings the striptease back on track” with long, lavish dance shows featuring props and characters often inspired by 1930s and 1940s musicals and films. Some of her more famous dances included a carousel horse, a giant powder compact, a filigree heart, and a claw-foot bathtub with a working showerhead. Her feather fan dance, inspired by burlesque dancer Sally Rand, featured the world’s largest feather fan, now on display at the Hollywood Museum of Sex.[25]

That’s because she’s more interested in being healthy than being skinny. “Forget the beach body stuff; find role models that you actually want to emulate and appreciate different kinds of beauty,” she told Hello! Mag in 2015. “I’m someone who’s never had your typical beach body.” She says she’s more into “other idols — Rita Hayworth, Hedy Lamarr … I looked at these totally beautiful women and I was like, ‘I can go for that ‘” admired instead of looking at the Victoria’s Secret girls, also under Dita’s guidance.
Dita doesn’t believe in dieting, instead she has a number of “disciplines” to keep her healthy. She told Vogue in 2014 that she likes to start her day with “a tall glass of water, preferably with fresh lemon” after seven to nine hours of sleep. So what is she eating? Although Dita isn’t vegan, she told Bon Appetit in 2015 that she likes to “eat vegan before 6pm so I can feel free to eat whenever I want.” I love good vegan restaurants and I’m interested in consuming less animal products, plus I have more energy when I don’t eat meat.” She also tries to be “totally vegan” at least three days a week. “I like to make my smoothie every morning, which is 70 percent veg and 30 percent fruit, and I mix it with water — that’s my breakfast,” she told Hello! I like to make big pots of kabocha squash or parsnip soup, and I always have arugula and cherry tomatoes so I can make an easy salad with a touch of rice can vinegar and olive oil and some pine nuts.” She also loves to spice up her food with a spicy gourmet mustard.
So what about after 6pm if she wants something more indulgent? “My vice is slurping down really good tacos with a nice smoky shot of mezcal. I also love the occasional In-N-Out burger or room service burger at 3am after a show,” she told Bon Appetit. She also loves a good drink, but not a sugary one. “I love a properly made dirty dry vodka martini,” she said. “I don’t like drinks that are too sweet, and I don’t like drinking my calories.”
A cute thing she loves? Dessert! She doesn’t want just any sugar bomb, however, and she doesn’t need much to satisfy her cravings. “The smell of something cinnamony came from the open kitchen,” she described to Grub Street in 2012. “We called the chef and asked what it was. Freshly baked beignets? We asked for a bite. Two minutes later came a single small fritter with chocolate filling and two forks. Perfect. I’m a bit of a dessert snob, true. I’m not on a diet; I reserve my indulgences when it’s worth it. Another dessert that was “worth it” was a bite of a chocolate chip cookie the following night.
