No roles are completely safe in the world of soaps. But among the safest are the shrews. Without them, the television in the sun is like stew without salt. John Conboy, executive producer of “The Young and Restless,” believes that “a bitch goddess can go on forever, as long as you make her feel tender and give her reasons for being.”
Shrews are the women you love to hate, the women who cause major conflicts in daytime series. These include: Beverlee McKinsey (formerly Iris in “Another World,” now with “Texas”), Marie Cheatham (Stephanie in “Search for Tomorrow”), Eileen Fulton (Lisa in “As the World Turns”), Randall Edwards (Delia in “Ryan’s Hope”), Brenda Dickson (until recently Jill in “The Young and Restless”), Susan Lucci (erica in “All My Children”) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie in “Days of Our Lives”) .
Every series should have a shrew for dramatic conflict. He’s the troublemaker who does everything the viewer wants to do but can’t do.
Susan Seaforth Hayes ’trials over the 11 years she played as Julie in“ Days of Our Lives ”were more than ordinary. Experts say he suffered the most. He started out as a teen-ager who stole a fur coat, and made a mistake in the beginning. She fell in love with the wrong person, got pregnant and gave birth to the baby. He tried to kill his best girlfriend. He married twice, not for love, and was unfaithful to his wives. She was raped, but not pregnant due to the violence. Finally, he marries his true love, is accused of murder, burned and wounded in the fire, and then divorces his true love. But they might get back together. Sure.
Hayes insists he hasn’t been mad in a long time. “She’s no longer plotting or revenge, and she’s gotten less interesting. They changed the character, because they needed a sympathetic one. We’ve justified Julie’s bad behavior and scenes of conflict.”
Author and soap expert Alan Gansberg agrees. “She’s become a goodnik. She made peace with her mother, she had a good marriage, brought back her son and she has mellowed.” But co-executive producer Al Rabin disagrees. “Julie has been a great bitch for 11 years, and I see no end. You always feel like Julie will scold you, she can break your head right away.”
Hayes thinks bitch goddesses are outdated cliches: “It goes back to the old days of soap, when women with careers were bad. Good women stayed at home, as madonna. Family and motherhood was good. Money was bad, and the girl who had bad sex with a man just for sex. When in “The Young Marrieds’ years ago, the good woman who wanted to save her marriage quit her job to stay home.”
As the shrews get older, they may lose some of their goddess luster, but the nonsense goes on forever: They become dowager who interfere.
Among the more notable are former film star Ruth Warrick (Phoebe in “All My Children”), Lois Kibbee (Geraldine in “Edge of Night”) and worst of all-Vanessa in “The Young and Restless, “played by the veteran. soap star K. T. Stevens (who was included in the original cast of “General Hospital”).
Conboy said, “Vanessa is one of the great manipulators of all time. Her motivations are due to the panic that she will lose whatever she has.”
Stevens, a veteran of Broadway plays and New York soaps, appreciates his rotten role. “I’m the power behind the throne of the Prentiss family’s multinational corporations. I’m probably the richest woman in the world,” she said with pleasure.
The actresses interviewed for this series are, for the most part, content with their roles and have no intention of leaving unless their story lines end. But not everything is sweet and light for every artist in every soap. A pair of male actors, who asked to remain anonymous, said there was an unwritten rule on the networks: If you’re on a daytime show, you stay in the sun.
Conboy and ABC executive Jacqueline Smith said that’s not the case. “It’s not true that artists are confined to soaps here.That may be true on the East Coast, because there’s nothing else to do, ”Conboy says. BAnd Smith is even vehement:“ We encourage our daytime people to do movies of the week. And Joyce Selznick, who is doing special casting for the network, is her eye on daytime all the time. ”
Some actors do this from day one to prime time. But some do not. One example is William Gray Espy, who became the gender symbol of “The Young and Restless in the role of Snapper. When he left in 1976, he and others believed it was for the big star.
