Bernard Goldberg Bias

It was the voice of Bernard, author of the controversial 2001 book Bias, which detailed the liberal bias Goldberg saw in most mainstream media. The students knew there were people who felt this way, but for many this was the first time they had spoken to you, even if only over the phone.

Almost 20 years ago, after his first book, Bias, came out, I gave many speeches, some to conservative organizations. The book was about liberal prejudice in the mainstream media. I was a reporter at CBS News for 28 years, so it was a behind-the-scenes exposé of how the sausage was made, of how prejudice got into the news.

I sa that despite the opinion of many conservatives, there was no conspiracy to steer the news in a liberal direction. I sa that there were no secret meetings, no secret handshakes and greetings, that hosts like CBS’s Dan Rather never walked into a room with top lieutenants, locked the door, lowered the blinds, dimmed the lights and sa, “Okay, how are we going to screw these republicans today?”

That’s not possible, I sa. Instead, bias was the result of groupthink. Put too many like-minded liberals on a newsroom and you’ll get a liberal bias on the news.

Bernard Goldberg

American journalist

Bernard Richard Goldberg (born May 31, 1945) is an American author, journalist, and political pundit. Goldberg has won fourteen Emmy Awards and was a producer, reporter and correspondent for CBS News for twenty-eight years (1972-2000)[1] and a paid contributor for Fox News for ten years (2009-2018).[2] He is best known for his ongoing criticism of journalistic practices in the United States – as detailed in his first book, published in 2001, Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News. He was a correspondent for Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO for 22 years until January 2021.[3][4]

Personal background[edit]

Goldberg was born in 1945 in New York City, New York[5] and graduated from Rutgers University in 1967.[6] Goldberg is of Jewish descent.[7]

Personal politics[edit]

Although Goldberg is frequently labeled a conservative, he previously rejected the label, describing himself as a lifelong liberal modeled on the ideals of the US Democratic Party of the 1960s. In a February 22, 2012 interview, Goldberg said, “The reason (people claim I’m conservative) is that I’m automatically marginalized. I wrote in ‘Bias’ that I would make racial discrimination a criminal offence, not just a civil offence. When it comes to gay rights, I don’t know anyone more libertarian than I am. I don’t want the government to interfere in this. I’m pro-abortion with reservations. I’ve never set foot in a country club. I consider myself an old-fashioned liberal. I’m a liberal, like liberals used to be, when they were like John F. Kennedy and when they were like Hubert Humphrey, when they were optimistic and enthusiastic and mainstream. I am not a liberal as liberals are today, at least as exemplified by Al Franken and Michael Moore, where they are angry, evil, narrow-minded and not mainstream but fringe. I think that’s what really annoys the media (about me). That this is coming from one of them. I was one of them for 28 years.”[8]

Goldberg has since embraced the “conservative” label, saying in 2020, “I see myself as a live-and-let-live conservative…a conservative libertarian, I guess I don’t want to be on their team anymore.” Not only do I accept their new left-wing politics, it’s their holier-than-thou elitism that annoys me. I no longer see myself as a liberal. You left me, not the other way around, now I’m a conservative. Not a rightwing crackpot, just a conservative with libertarian tendencies.”[9]

Career [edit]

From 1972 to 1974 he worked for CBS News as a producer in Atlanta; In 1974 he became a reporter and in 1976 a correspondent.[10] Goldberg has been a frequent contributor to the CBS Evening News and the CBS newsmagazines Eye to Eye with Connie Chung and 48 Hours. He hosted two prime-time documentaries for CBS, Don’t Blame Me and In Your Face, America.[11] Don’t Blame Me aired on May 26, 1994, and examined the alleged irresponsibility of Americans.[12] In Your Face, America, which aired April 7, 1998, said that American culture suffers from a “grossness” induced by entertainment such as The Jerry Springer Show, South Park, and gangsta rap music.[13 ]

In 2001, his first book, Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News, was published[14] and became a New York Times Best Seller.[15][16]

Goldberg followed Bias with two books – Arrogance: Rescuing America from the Media Elite (2003) and 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America (2005). -leaning individuals and only “a few token right-wingers”. There were also many positive comments on the book, including one from Jonah Goldberg (no relation) who said, “100 People Who Are Screwing Up America is a boisterous and insightful look at 100 of the most egregious obstacles on the road to our nation’s return to glory ” and Brent Bozell, who commented, “100 People Who Are Screwing Up America is out and it makes a wonderful read for anyone not on that list.”[17]

Crazys to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right: How One Side Lost Its Mind and the Other Lost Its Nerve followed in 2007, followed by A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (and Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and die mainstream media in 2009. Both books were also national bestsellers, with A Slobbering Love Affair coming in at number two on the New York Times list.

Awards[edit]

Goldberg has won an Emmy for journalism 14 times (six on CBS News, eight[18] on HBO). For his June 2000 segment “Dominican Free For All,” in which he examined corrupt Major League Baseball recruiting practices in the Dominican Republic, Goldberg won a Sports Emmy for “Outstanding Sports Journalism.” He won that award again in 2005 for his story exposing the illegal use of boys as camel jockeys in Saudi Arabia, in 2008 for a story about post-concussion syndrome afflicting some former NFL players, and in 2009 for a Real Sports story starring Bryant Gumbel about the slaughter of racehorses that were no longer making money for their owners.[19][20]

In May 2011, Goldberg won another Sports Emmy, this time for his story about the link between head injuries in athletes and an ALS-like illness, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.[21] In April 2012, Goldberg won his 12th Emmy, this time for a report on the College Bowl Money Trail.[22] And in May 2017, he won his 13th Emmy for an International Olympic Committee Inquiry.[23] Later that year, in October 2017, Goldberg won another Emmy, a News Emmy[18] in the Investigative Reporting category, for his story on head injuries in youth soccer. Goldberg received the 2006 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for a story about child exploitation in the United Arab Emirates. It was the first time a sports program had won a DuPont award.[24]

In 2012, Goldberg won his second duPont for a series of works on concussion in the NFL. The duPont committee said, “Correspondent Bernard Goldberg’s interviews are sensitive and scrutinizing, and advance the story. Goldberg and his team investigating Lou Gehrig’s historical precedent unearthed new information about concussions he suffered as a Columbia University baseball player and as a Yankee. The coverage raised public, NFL and Congress awareness of this important public health issue.[25]

In 2018, Bernie and a team of Real Sports journalists won another duPont-Columbia Award for a story about the Olympics titled Lord of the Rings. As the duPont committee put it: “This ambitious investigative report – filmed in nine countries – uncovered bribery and corruption at the IOC and detailed how its members seek wealth, privilege and self-glory at the expense of the Games.[26]

In 2020, Goldberg and the team at Real Sports won Investigative Reporters & Editors’ 2019 Sports Awards for their article “Game Change.” The report focused on the changing demographics of tackle football.[27]
