How Much Money Chris Harrison Got for Leaving ‘The Bachelor’
Chris Harrison’s time on The Bachelor has come to an end, and as it turns out, it came with a price tag.
The longtime host first resigned from the ABC dating franchise in February amid increasing opposition to his comments during an “Extra” interview with Rachel Lindsay. When the former Bachelorette Harrison asked about the recent racism controversy surrounding contestant Rachael Kirkconnell, which included attending an “Old South” party, he urged fans to show Kirkconnell clemency and asked if it was under a lens of 2018 would have been considered racist.
And it seemed that Harrison thought the interview went well, despite Lindsay saying on her Higher Learning with Van Latham and Rachel Lindsay podcast that he was “talking about and with me.” Instead, he texted her that he “appreciated the conversation.”
But outcry from Bachelor Nation stars and fans soon prompted Harrison to apologize on Instagram for “historic racism apologies” and again during an interview with Good Morning America. What originally started with Harrison being replaced by Emmanuel Acho just for the After the Final Rose special soon morphed into former Bachelorettes Kaitlyn Bristowe and Tayshia Adams appearing as hosts for Katie Thurston’s season. Most recently, Variety announced a rotating roster of Bachelor in Paradise hosts, including David Spade, which seems to have been the last straw.
According to Variety sources, the “Bachelor in Paradise” exchange ended an already ailing relationship and Harrison began initiating exit talks.
Here’s what you need to know:
Harrison left The Bachelor franchise with approximately $10 million
After “nearly 20 years of dirt” on The Bachelor franchise, an ABC source told Page Six that Harrison was looking for $25 million for a good exit. But according to Variety, the final price was actually around $10 million — a $9 million payout with contract fees remaining.
He enlisted the help of a stars’ attorney, Bryan Freedman, who represented Gabrielle Union in her exit from America’s Got Talent.
Harrison confirmed his final exit on June 8 on Instagram. “I’ve had a truly incredible run hosting the Bachelor franchise and now I’m excited to start a new chapter. I’m so grateful to Bachelor Nation for all the memories we made together,” he wrote. “As my two-decade journey comes to an end, the friendships I’ve made will last a lifetime.”
Neither party involved has confirmed the payout amount.
Harrison is worth between $16 million and $25 million
According to a recent article by The Sun, Harrison is worth $16 million, although Celebrity Net Worth put the total closer to $25 million. It’s unclear if that amount reflects his most recent payout.
He was best known as a TV presenter. Harrison didn’t just host Bachelor Nation — he hosted TV Guide Network’s “Hollywood 411” and an iteration of ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”.
Harrison has also worked with Seagram’s on a canned rose, designed a range of rings for Manly Bands, written The Perfect Letter and invested in the Steam Theory Brewery in Texas.
“The Bachelorette” returns tonight at 8 p.m. on ABC. East.

Bryan Freedman is an American entertainment attorney and trial attorney. He is a co-founder of the Los Angeles law firm Freedman & Taitelman LLP. Freedman is known for representing many high-profile defendants in the entertainment industry, including actors, athletes, and film and television companies, among others.[5][6][7][8][9]
Bryan Freedman also represented several parties represented by the Sony Pictures hack[10] and was instrumental in the $500 million lawsuit relating to the debts of the Michael Jackson estate.[11]
Education and personal life[edit]
Bryan Freedman attended McGeorge School of Law. He continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Juris Doctor in 1991.[12] Freedman lives with his family in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. His son, Spencer Freedman, is a college basketball player for the Ivy League’s Harvard Crimson.
Career [edit]
After graduating from law school, Freedman was admitted to the California State Bar in 1991.[1] Bryan Freedman met his business partner, Michael Taitelman, while he was studying law at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1997 they formed Freedman & Taitelman LLP, a law firm primarily representing clients in the entertainment industry.[14] Since 1997, Freedman has gradually built his reputation as a celebrated attorney through a string of high-profile cases.[15][16][17][18][19]
Lawsuits and litigation[edit]
Chris Harrison[edit]
Bryan Freedman represented Chris Harrison, an American television and game show host, after Harrison was criticized for defending a contestant on The Bachelor who was accused of racism. During a controversial interview with former Bachelorette star Rachel Lindsay, Harrison defended former contestant Rachael Kirkconnell for attending an “Old South” ball with her sorority at Georgia College & State University in 2018.[21] The ball was hosted by Kappa Alpha Order (KA), a college fraternity with historical ties to the Ku Klux Klan, which Robert E. Lee describes as its “spiritual founder.”[22]
After public criticism, Harrison had to leave the franchise. According to a number of sources, Freedman was tasked with negotiating an eight-figure payout from the network.[6][5][23]
Gabrielle Union[ edit ]
Gabrielle Union served as a judge on America’s Got Talent for its fourteenth season, but the show failed to renew her contract for another season in November 2019, allegedly after speaking out against racism. The contract of Union’s fellow America’s Got Talent, Julianne Hough, was also rejected.[24] In May 2020, Union filed a discrimination lawsuit against the producers of America’s Got Talent, alleging racism and prejudice.[25] As Page Six notes, “Freedman represented Union in her dispute with ‘AGT’ last year after she complained about racism and a ‘toxic environment’ on the talent show and was fired as a judge. The case was settled in September. Freedman filed a Union complaint with the California Department of Equal Employment and Housing in June after NBC completed its own investigation.”[6][26]
Michael Jackson Estate[ edit ]
Bryan Freedman (along with Howard Weitzman and executors John Branca and John McClain) was instrumental in settling the estate’s disputed debts following Michael Jackson’s death. In particular, Freedman successfully settled a $100 million lawsuit against HBO[11][27] and $500 million in estate debts.[28]
