Carlos Vives was born on August 7, 1961[1] in Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia, where he spent the first 12 years of his life. At that age he moved to Bogotá with his family in search of a better life. He enrolled at Jorge Tadeo Lozano University and has a degree in Advertising from the university. He also developed a taste for rock in Bogotá, became involved in the local music scene and began playing in bars and cafes across the city.
In 1982, Vives began starring in a number of shows and telenovelas, including Pequeños Gigantes (“Little Giants” – 1983) and Tuyo es Mi Corazón (“Yours Is My Heart” – 1985). He finally rose to fame in 1986 when he played the title role in Gallito Ramírez, which told the story of a boxer on Colombia’s Caribbean coast who falls in love with an uptight girl played by his first wife, Margarita Rosa de Francisco. In the same year he released his first album Por Fuera y Por Dentro. The album, which consists mainly of ballads, was unsuccessful. In 1987 he released his second ballad album No Podrás Escapar de Mí. Although the title track peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks, the album did not sell well. Upon his return to Colombia in 1991, he was offered a television role that would change his life forever. He was cast to star in a fantasy series based on the life of Vallenato composer Rafael Escalona, unsurprisingly titled Escalona.[1] He sang the composer’s songs in the series, and then retooled his career towards Vallenato,[2] achieved national success with the release of the telenovela’s two soundtrack albums, Escalona: Un Canto a la Vida and Escalona: Vol. 2.
In 1993, with the support of the band “La Provincia”, Vives released the album Clásicos de la Provincia, in which he began fusing vallenato with rock, [1] pop and other Caribbean-Colombian ethnic rhythms. This merger outraged Vallenato purists. This vallenato style was a huge hit not only in Colombia but in all Latin American countries, and the album’s lead single, La Gota Fría, became a hit across Latin America. Clásicos de la Provincia, won the Billboard Latin Music Awards Best Album and became a timeless classic of Colombian and Latin American music, introducing vallenato to both Colombia and the rest of the world.
The follow-up album, La Tierra del Olvido, marks another step in Vive’s desire to fuse rock, funk and pop music with traditional Colombian genres. The album featured Vive’s classic hits such as the title track and fast opening track Pa’ Mayte.
His subsequent releases Tengo Fé (1997), El Amor de Mi Tierra (1999), Déjame Entrar (2001) and El Rock de Mi Pueblo (2004) were all commercially successful and well-received by critics. In 2002, Carlos Vives won his first Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album with his album Déjame Entrar.
In 2009 he released the album Clásicos de la Provincia II, which was sold exclusively in the Colombian supermarket chain “Almacenes Éxito”. On the album, Vives returned to covering famous Vallenato songs in his own style. It sold massively and the single Las Mujeres received wide radio airplay across Colombia.

With more than 40 songs written that year, the new album was released in April 2013 and contained 11 tracks. The first single “Volví a Nacer” was released in September 2012 and went straight to #1 on the Billboard chart. [clarification needed] The second single “Como Le Gusta a Tu Cuerpo” with Michel Teló was released at the end of January 2013. Carlos also graced the small screen for all of Colombia to see as he performed alongside fellow artists Ricardo Montaner, Fanny Lu and Andrés Cepeda served as one of the coaches for the first season of the phenomenon of singing competition series The Voice Colombia, which premiered in October 2012 via Colombian television channel Caracol TV.
On May 27, 2016, “La Bicicleta” featuring Colombian singer Shakira was released as a single. The video for the song was filmed in each of their hometowns in Colombia.[3] The song debuted at number one on Billboard’s US Latin Airplay chart and number four on the US Hot Latin Songs chart.

“It’s the north coast of Colombia,” he continues, “on the Caribbean coast. I grew up with Vallenato. The Vallenato was born in the countryside, on the plantations, with the workers. Basically, it’s very specific to the local culture.”
That’s how it is with Vives. He talks about himself but tells a parallel story of Vallenato, the music he plays and sees as analogous to his life.
Vives and the Vallenato are the cultural result of mixed Indian, European, African and Middle Eastern influences. In this they are both very Colombian. Both suffered from a Eurocentric inferiority complex in Vives’ youth, but have come to love himself in his adulthood.
Vallenato is upbeat, rhythmically complex accordion-based music, a sort of hybrid of zydeco and cumbia. But in Colombia, it has long been viewed with contempt by the white ruling classes because of its association with blacks and Native Americans. In that sense, it’s more like tango, which was despised in Argentina until it became popular in Paris, and bachata, which was rejected in the Dominican Republic until Guerra popularized it in the early 1990s.
Vives was Vallenato’s beloved savior, mixed it with modern electronic elements and brought it to the world.
But Vives didn’t come to that position lightly, nor was his place in music undisputed, especially among those dark-skinned Vallenato prodigies who have complained that Vives is just a handsome white rocker who doesn’t even play his own accordion.

Vives was the second of four sons born to a doctor and a housewife in a family of politicians, celebrities and doctors. They were and are, he says, proud members of Colombia’s white minority, which makes up 20% of the country.
Yet Vives grew up in a neighborhood he says was surrounded by “negritos” and “indiecitos” — tiny, and some would say, patronizing terms used to describe blacks and Native Americans.
“That’s why I play my local music,” he says. “Because in my house my parents were white Hispanic but my neighbor was negrito and my other neighbor was indiecito and I grew up with all of them. And I couldn’t have it because of my education or my life circumstances, the place I was born and all that, I don’t discriminate. I believe we are all children of God and I can’t see a black person as different from me even though I choose a person of my own color to marry, you know? I don’t believe in differences between people. My music is living proof of the equality of all people.”
At 14 he had moved to Bogota with his mother after his parents divorced and by 18 he was singing professionally in nightclubs with a rock band. Vives studied Advertising and Public Relations at Jorge Tadeo Losano University during the day. But at night, he nurtured his less practical dream of becoming an actor by taking drama classes at Colombia’s National University.
Then one night while he was singing at a nightclub called Ramon Antigua, Vives got his first big break when a group of television producers in the audience asked him to audition for a television series.
He landed the role and starred in many popular novels over the next 15 years – the Latin American prime-time “soap operas.” He met his first wife, Margarita Rosa De Francisco, on the set of the novel Gallito Ramirez. They later divorced.
Vives moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico at age 25 to pursue his acting career. There he met his second wife, Herlinda Gomez, achieved international fame as an actor, and caught the attention of Sony Discos, a Miami-based Latin American music label, who offered him a recording contract at the age of 27.
Vives recorded two pop ballad albums. He continued to act in novels – until finally the one who would free his inner Colombian and change his life and his Latin pop forever came along: “Escalona”.

“Escalona” was a miniseries based on the life of Vallenato composer Rafael Escalona. Vives returned to Santa Marta to film the series.
There, he says, he suddenly understood why he was unhappy as a pop ballad player and novelist in San Juan: It wasn’t who he was. Back home, Vives says, he felt a new connection to local culture, food and accent, geography, and most importantly, music.
In playing the role of Escalona, Vives says he learned about the richness and history of Vallenato, and he realized that he had simply discarded the music that was most fundamental to his own mind and upbringing because the ruling class had looked down on.
“It’s beautiful music,” says Vives, “and I wanted all Colombians and Latin Americans to be proud of their native culture.”
Vives sang on the Escalona soundtrack, which became the best-selling album in Colombian history. Then he decided to only sing vallenato from now on.
“A lot of people said, ‘Don’t record this music, this music is only popular there, it’s never going to sell,'” he says. “And I said, ‘I don’t care. I want to do it. I want to do it.'”
When Vives told Sony Discos about his awakening, he was immediately fired. Vives says the record company’s response shows racism and classism in the Latin music industry.
A rep for the label would only say their departure was “amicable.”
Vives started his own small company, Gaira Productions, named after the native Indians of Santa Marta.
He recorded his first Vallenato album, Clasicos de la Provincia, alone and released it in 1993. It contained updated versions of many classic Vallenato hits, including La Gota Fria, which became a hit in many clubs in Latin America and the US The album sold more than 1 million copies.
Although the album sold well in Colombia – around 600,000 copies there – Vives was not accepted by the Vallenato establishment, with some of its members seeing him as an intruder.
“They said I was too ‘rock’ to play vallenato,” he says, “but all I’ve done is breathe new life into the vallenato. It shouldn’t be stuck in a museum.”
Over the years, Vives has won the respect and admiration of most Vallenato purists thanks to a strong band that includes accordionist Egidio Cuadrado and gaita flute player Mayte Montero, both widely respected musicians in the genre.
Ironically, Latin labels were soon knocking on Vives’ door – including, he says, the one that fired him. But no one would agree to his terms: that they have complete control over their material.
Vives recorded two more albums alone. The first, “La Tierra del Olvido”, sold well. But the second, a moody album about the ravages of war entitled Tengo Fe, was bombed.
“It was an album that talked about war, it talked about having faith,” he explains, laughing and shrugging. “So obviously nobody liked it and nobody cared.”
After Tengo Fe, Vives moved to Miami, partly because war and crime in Colombia just overwhelmed him, but also, he says, because he was constantly traveling there to promote his music. He has kept Gaira’s offices in Colombia and supports 20 families, he says.
“Miami has been very important to me for many years,” says Vives. “The Latino colony in Miami, the Cubans, have been great with me. You opened doors for me.”
In 1997, EMI called Latin America. To Vives’ surprise, the label accepted his terms. His latest album, El Amor de Mi Tierra, is the first Vallenato album Vives has recorded for a major label. He is collaborating with executive producer Emilio Estefan.
The album was a commercial and artistic success and brought Vives closer to his life’s work: to make Colombians proud of their own culture and music and to introduce Vallenato to the world.
