CBS News Correspondent Jeff Pegues Opens Up About Severe Anxiety, Nearly Losing His Voice
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Recently, some high-profile athletes and celebrities have come out public about their mental health issues and how it’s affecting their careers.
In particular, one of our colleagues at CBS News recently opened up about his struggle with anxiety.
CBS News correspondent Jeff Pegues revealed his work is being marred by severe anxiety. He explained in a live Instagram session with correspondent Jerrika Duncan.
“About five years ago I noticed my voice was getting weaker… It got to the point where it took me about 20 minutes to read a track, those are the words we wrote in the video… At the same time time I was going through a divorce,” he said.
like dr As reported by CBS2’s Max Gomez, Pegues said he doesn’t think those stressors in his life could be contributing to his voice problems, but they probably were.
“My voice sounds better now because I’ve gone through some experimental treatments. One treatment told me to take this drug called Siren, which I would take in the morning,” Pegues said.
That worked to ease the brain part of his anxiety, but not enough, so believe it or not, the doctors added Botox injections down his throat, which eased a paralysis in the muscles that control his vocal cords, and it allowed them to get together somewhat normally.
“Honestly, it felt like my vocal cords had gotten a little bigger. As if I could feel some kind of swelling here. So I’m wondering if it squeezed the vocal cords closer together to allow them to make that sound, but it works,” Pegues said.
Pegues was understandably reluctant to speak out about his struggles, but then a number of well-known figures began to go public with their mental health issues, making it easier for Pegues to do the same.
“Why not just be honest about who you are, and if you’re not feeling well, that’s okay too… If you feel like you need to see a professional to help you get through a difficult time, need to.” do it with your mental or physical health,” Pegues said.
He also shared with Gomez that he thinks the combination of the anti-anxiety medication and the botox injections made all the difference. It’s also about acknowledging that we all need help sometimes.
